Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl IV

One of the most exciting teams in the NFL today, the Kansas City Chiefs are poised as AFC favorites to reach Super Bowl LIV in Miami in 2020. However, back in 1970, they would face off against the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV from the “Big Easy,” New Orleans.

Super Bowl in the Big Easy

In the fourth installment of the Super Bowl, the Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs squared off in what would go on to become an unforgettable Super Bowl matchup. Played for the first time (of many) in New Orleans, Louisiana at Tulane Stadium, a very rainy yet exciting Super Bowl would take place in front of nearly 81,000 fans from all over the country, once again marking the largest Super Bowl crowd in history, a nearly 6,000 increase in attendance from Super Bowl III.

Most experts went into this game predicting a victory by the NFL side of the Super Bowl, however the AFL would once again go on to surprise, as the Kansas City Chiefs would capture their first Super Bowl victory, 23-7 over the Vikings. Kansas City’s stifling defense held the Vikings to just 67 total rushing yards in the entire game, and quarterback Len Dawson would be named Super Bowl MVP, completing 12 of his 17 pass attempts for 142 yards and one touchdown.

Super Bowl IV would also mark a monumental and very different time for the Super Bowl halftime show, with actress and singer Carol Channing taking center stage. Normally, a band from a university or college would perform the halftime duties. The announcers for Super Bowl IV were Jack Buck (father of FOX Sports staple Joe Buck) and legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall, which made for an attention-grabbing Super Bowl broadcast.

2019 NFL Schedule: Top Matchups

Just days from the 2019 NFL Draft,  the NFL announced the regular season slate for all 32 teams, highlighted by title game rematches and some big-time matchups. A look at the highlights of the 256-game schedule.

Week 1: Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears

To kick off the ‘Road to Super Bowl 54’ in Miami, the NFL bucked the tradition of having the defending Super Bowl champions host the opening game, opting to instead highlight the league’s 100th anniversary by showcasing one of the league’s most historic rivalries.

Last season’s Week 1 matchup between the Bears and Packers proved to be one of the more exciting games of the entire season, seeing Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers tossing three second-half touchdown after an injury, leading the Pack to a 24-23 victory.

Week 2: New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Rams

One of the most anticipated rematches of the last decade in the NFL, the #1 seed in the NFC last season, the New Orleans Saints, travel to LA to face off against the reigning NFC champion Rams in a rematch of the 2018 NFC Championship game.

This past offseason, the NFL expanded its use of instant replay to include missed pass interference calls, directly in response to the blatant missed call at the end of the NFC Championship game. The rematch of these two teams promises bad blood, fireworks, and offensive displays of firepower that could easily make the matchup the best game of the 2019 season.

Week 5: Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs

A rematch of the 2018 divisional playoff game, the Chiefs come into the season reigning AFC West champions and easily the favorite in the AFC. The Indianapolis Colts, however, have reloaded their roster, and look to capitalize on a promising 2018 campaign, most notably adding former Chiefs pass rusher Justin Houston the an already formidable defensive front.

Week 14: Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots

Another rematch from the 2018 playoff slate, the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots once again welcome quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs into Gillette Stadium in a rematch of the 2018 AFC Championship game.

Sporting two of the more electrifying matchups from the 2018 season, both the Patriots and Chiefs remain atop the AFC’s Super Bowl favorites, and it appears possible the two could be headed for an AFC title game rematch as well.

2019 Super Bowl: Top Possible Matchups

Past the halfway point on the Road to Super Bowl 53, the 2018 NFL season enters Week 10 with plenty of teams emerging as conference favorites. So what are some of the top matchups we could see when teams hit the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia in February 2019?

Kansas City Chiefs (8-1) vs. Los Angeles Rams (8-1)

One of the NFL’s elite offenses meets the best statistical defense in the league in this hypothetical matchup, as the two current-conference leaders, primed for #1 seeds and home field advantage in the playoffs, meet in Super Bowl 53.

A lone last-second loss to the New England Patriots stands between the Chiefs and an undefeated record, but that doesn’t deter any excitement when it comes to this Chiefs offense. Something many didn’t see come, the Chiefs are led by an early MVP-favorite in quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has completed 66% of his passes for 2,526 yards and a league-leading 26 touchdowns.

Quarterback Jared Goff has seemingly made another leap under head coach Sean McVay, completing 68% of his passes for 2,425 yards and 17 touchdowns thus far. The feature of the Rams offense, the aforementioned Gurley, leads the league in rushing with 800 yards and 11 touchdowns through the first eight games.

The Kansas City Chiefs, sitting at 8-1 and led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is progressing at a record-setting pace, would meet the high-flying Los Angeles Rams, who for the second-straight season are leaving many surprised. Despite coming off a loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 9, the Rams remain heavy favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

New England Patriots (7-2) vs. Los Angeles Rams (8-1)

The classic Boston vs. Los Angeles matchup comes to the NFL. After decades of the historic rivalry of the Boston Celtics vs. the Los Angeles Lakers, and on the heels of a Boston Red Sox World Series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the NFL’s version of this historic rivalry could make its way to Atlanta in 2019.

After starting 1-2, the New England Patriots are on a six-game win streak, led by none other than five-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. As long as Brady and Belichick continue to lead the way, the Patriots will continue to be odds-on favorites to reach the Super Bowl.

Kansas City Chiefs (8-1) vs. New Orleans Saints (7-1)

The offensive matchup that would create fireworks would most likely be the Kansas City Chiefs meeting the New Orleans Saints in Atlanta for Super Bowl 53. The two highest-scoring offenses in the NFL, the Chiefs (36.3) and Saints (34.9) are both scoring at lightning paces, which would make for an exciting Super Bowl matchup.

Quarterback Drew Brees, in a year where he set the record for most passing yards in NFL history, has thrown for 1,990 yards and 14 touchdowns, with Pro Bowl wide receiver Michael Thomas and running back Alvin Kamara seeing the lion-share of those targets (55% of Brees’ completions).

Not to be outdone, the Saints defense ranks #1 in rushing yards allowed per game, holding their opponents to an incredible 74.1 yards per game. With Brees at the helm and a solidified defensive from anchored by defensive end Cam Jordan and cornerback Marcus Lattimore, the Saints can never be counted out to make it to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta in 2019.

2019 Super Bowl 53: Mid-Season Favorites

Officially through Week 8 of the 2018-19 NFL season, the regular season has reached its halfway point. So what’s teams are looking like the league favorites to head to Atlanta at the end of the season for Super Bowl 53?

Los Angeles Rams (8-0, 1st in NFC West)

Touting one of the best offenses in the NFL (and the #1 rushing attack featuring running back Todd Gurley), the Los Angeles Rams once again find themselves the darlings of the NFL season, standing alone as the remaining unbeaten team at 8-0.

Until someone steps up and dethrones the Rams as the league’s lone undefeated team, the Rams will remain a heavy favorite to be the NFC representative in Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta.

Kansas City Chiefs (7-1, 1st in AFC West)

One of the biggest surprises of the 2018 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs tout the league’s most prominent offense when it comes to scoring, racking up a staggering 36.2 points per game so far in the first half of the season.

As long as Mahomes is continuing to sling it, and key playmakers such as running back Kareem Hunt and wide receiver Tyreek Hill can remain healthy, this Chiefs team will remain one of the favorites to reach Super Bowl 53 in 2019.

New Orleans Saints (6-1, 1st in NFC South)

After a disappointing end to the 2017 campaign following the “minneapolis miracle joe buck” the New Orleans Saints have surprised many, sporting the second-highest scoring offense (33.4 points per game) in the NFL to go alongside their staunch defensive front.

New England Patriots (6-2, 1st in AFC East)

Is it really a Super Bowl favorites “preview” without the New England Patriots? Despite another slow start to the season, the Patriots, touting the league’s fourth-ranked offense in points per game (29.9), have rattled off five-straight wins, most recently a 25-6 drubbing of the AFC East-rival Buffalo Bills.

One can argue that as long as head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady remain at the helm, the Patriots will continue to be favored to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. And if the team can capitalize on the early five-game win streak and big divisional lead, they’ll be a favorite to reach Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta in February.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl IV

Two of the more exciting stories of the 2017 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings found themselves at the top of their respective divisions, yet falling short of their ultimate goal, the Super Bowl. However, in 1970, the two would face off in a head-to-head matchup in Super Bowl IV.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl II

The Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders will both be looking to the 2018 NFL season as a year of redemption. But in 1968, both teams  found themselves in the second AFL-NFL championship game, with the Packers making their second-straight appearance. The Road to the 2019 Super Bowl in Atlanta continues with Super Bowl II in Miami, Florida.

NFL vs. AFL: Part Two

Held at Miami’s Orange Bowl Stadium on January 14, 1968, the Green Bay Packers would make their second-straight Super Bowl appearance in front of more than 74,000 fans. Super Bowl II, or the second NFL-AFL Championship game, would be yet another victory for the NFL, providing fans with belief that the NFL was much more talented than their AFL counterparts.

After defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I, the Packers would take on the vaunted Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II. Reporters and fans alike expected the Packers to dominate the game, and that they did. In fact, the Oakland Raiders were only able to score twice in the entirety of the game. Don Chandler, the Packers kicker, was able to make four field goals and defensive back Herb Adderley added a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown en route to the Packers’ second straight championship, a 33-41 victory over Oakland.

Not to be forgotten was Packers quarterback Bart Starr, who not only was the first two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback, but was the first two-time Super Bowl MVP as well. Just two Super Bowls played, two championships and two Super Bowl MVP awards would help to cement Starr’s status as one of the all-time greats.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl I

With all 32 teams reporting for training camp in recent weeks, the Road to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta has officially kicked off the 2018 NFL season. And as we embark on the road to 2019 in Atlanta, we’re looking back before as move forward, beginning with the very first ever NFL Championship game, Super Bowl I between the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers.

The Very First Super Bowl

Played on January 15, 1967, Super Bowl I between the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers took place at the always memorable Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, located in Los Angeles, California. Nearly 62,000 fans were in attendance for the first ever Super Bowl, the same city that will play host to Super Bowl LVI in 2022.

The Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs were the first two teams to take part in a Super Bowl. In the first half of the game, the Chiefs would jump out to a quick lead and take control of the game in the early goings. However, in the second half, things would pull a little more even thanks to a 50-yard interception return for touchdown by Packers defensive back Willie Wood, and a unforgettable performance by Packers quarterback Bart Starr.

Starr would go on to be named Super Bowl I MVP, and eventually lead the Packers to a 35-10 victory, throwing for two touchdowns and completing 16 of his 23 passing attempts.

One interesting note about Super Bowl I is that it was broadcast nationally by two networks simultaneously, being shown on both NBC and CBS in 1967. There was no flashy halftime performer or performance, but rather fans were entertained at halftime by a mix of various college bands and musicians from the universities of both Arizona and Michigan.

Road to Super Bowl 53: AFC West Preview

Settling in for the quiet summer before ramping up for training camp in less than a month, teams are readying to set their sights on the intense ‘Road to Super Bowl 53’ in Atlanta in 2019. Next up in our divisional previews is the always competitive and parity-driven AFC West.

Kansas City Chiefs

2017 Record: 10-6, AFC West Champions

Normally, you wouldn’t expect a team that got out to a 5-0 start on the 2017 NFL season and had an MVP-caliber quarterback at the helm to make too many changes. The 2017 AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs, however, are an exception to that rule.

After finishing the season at 10-6, the Chiefs decided it was time to shake things up. The team shipped quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins in exchange for defensive back Kendall Fuller and a draft pick, opening the door for now-sophomore quarterback Patrick Mahomes to take the reins. And it wasn’t just the quarterbacking position that saw a dramatic makeover. The Chiefs also added two of the biggest prizes of the 2018 free agency period in wide receiver Sammy Watkins and linebacker Anthony Hitchens as well.

Los Angeles Chargers

2017 Record: 9-7

One of the more mediocre teams of the 2017 NFL season, the LA Chargers finished their first season back in the city of angels at just two games over .500, and followed it up with a relatively quiet offseason. Getting a steal in rookie safety Derwin James out of Florida State with the #17 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft was what could be considered the highlight of the transactional period. Aside from James, the team was able to help fortify their offensive line by bringing in former Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey, as well as a new target for quarterback Philip Rivers in tight end Virgil Green.

Oakland Raiders

2017 Record: 6-10

After a disappointing 6-10 campaign, just a year removed from winning the AFC West and being a top-tier team in the AFC, the Raiders decided to shake things up when it came to the coaching staff. Enter; former Raiders head coach (and Super Bowl champion) Jon Gruden.

While many thought the Raiders would have an ‘all-out’ approach to free agency and the draft thanks to the returned presence of Gruden, that wasn’t the case for the Raiders. The Raiders weren’t short on moves, but it was the lack of ‘star power’ that surprised many. The team drafted offensive lineman Kolton Miller out of UCLA with their first-round pick, and brought in solid position players such as Rashaan Melvin (DB), Doug Martin (RB), Martavis Bryant (WR), Reggie Nelson (S) and their prized pickup, Jordy Nelson (WR).

Denver Broncos

2017 Record: 5-11

An offseason of turmoil and speculation followed the Broncos after their disappointing 5-11 campaign in 2017. Following the retirement of quarterback Peyton Manning, the team has struggled to provide an offensive presence at the quarterback position… something the Broncos believe they have solved in the 2018 offseason.

The Broncos signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback (and 2017 standout) Case Keenum to take the reins as the team’s new quarterback. Keenum helped lead the Vikings to a 13-3 record and the #2 seed in the NFC, featuring an NFC Championship loss to the eventual-Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Aside from Keenum, Broncos fans are feeling optimistic, as the team was also able to grab arguably the best player in the 2018 NFL Draft in edge rusher Bradley Chubb, pairing him alongside the already-daunting Von Miller.

Road to Super Bowl 52: Wild Card Weekend

The Road to Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis is officially here! Taking a quick look at all the games slated to kick off the 2017-18 NFL Playoffs throughout Wild Card Weekend.

Tennessee Titans @ Kansas City Chiefs (Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET on ESPN)

Quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans (9-7), just one game short of an AFC South title and coming off a win-and-in victory in Week 17, will travel to Kansas City to take on the AFC West champion Chiefs (10-6) to kick off NFL Wild Card weekend.

After a strong start to the 2017 NFL season had Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith in the early NFL MVP conversation, the Chiefs seemed to cool down in the second half of the season, losing 6 of 7 games in the middle of the season after winning their first five, and ending on a four-game win streak, to finish the year with 10 wins. The Titans, on the other hand, struggled with injuries early on, most notably with Mariota and a nagging hamstring injury.

Atlanta Falcons @ Los Angeles Rams (Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET on NBC)

After a collapse in Super Bowl 51 in Houston, the Atlanta Falcons (10-6) seemingly struggled to overcome that “Super Bowl hangover” in 2017. Touting one of the highest-flying offenses in 2016, the Falcons ranked just 14th in points per game (22.1), and quarterback Matt Ryan cooled off after his MVP campaign in 2016, throwing just 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 65.7 percent of his passes.

The Los Angeles Rams (11-5) are the opposite. After an uninspiring campaign in 2016, the team brought in Sean McVay to be the new head coach, and the team was an offensive firestorm, leading the league in points per game (29.9), thanks large in part to a stellar season from running back Todd Gurley II, who finished the season with 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Buffalo Bills @ Jacksonville Jaguars (Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET on CBS)

Perhaps the most surprising Wild Card matchup of the playoffs kicks off our Sunday action, as the Buffalo Bills (9-7) travel to take on the AFC South champion Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6).

Boasting the second-ranked defense in the league, the Jaguars held their opponents to just 15.5 points per game in 2017, second only to the Minnesota Vikings’ 14.8. The Jaguars also relied heavily on the legs of running back Leonard Fournette, as the team finished at the top of the league in rushing yards per game (141.4) and second in rushing touchdowns (18).

The Buffalo Bills seemingly snuck their way into the playoffs, thanks to a game-winning touchdown in Week 17 from the Cincinnati Bengals, defeating the Baltimore Ravens. When you look at the statistics, the Bills seem to have no business being in the playoffs, ranking second-to-last in passing yards per game (176.6), 27th in passing touchdowns (16) and 29th in sacks (27). However, the team ranked 6th overall in rushing yards per game (126.1), thanks large in part to running back LeSean McCoy.

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints (Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET on FOX)

One of the more highly anticipated matchups in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs is the Carolina Panthers (11-5) traveling to New Orleans to take on the NFC South champion Saints (11-5). These teams will face off for the third time this season (second in New Orleans) as both are members of the NFC South, which has a staggering three of its four teams in the playoffs.

Despite struggles early in the season, the Panthers offense returned to form, ranking 4th in rushing yards per game (131.4) and 7th in rushing touchdowns (15), thanks to a committee of quarterback Cam Newton and running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jonathan Stewart. The defense was also nothing to balk at, ranking near the top of the league in getting after the opponent’s quarterbacks (3rd – 50 sacks in 2017).

The Saints, whom plenty were ready to write off at the beginning of the season, were one of the best teams in the NFL in 2017. The offense, ranked near the top of the league in every statistical category, was a powerhouse, averaging 28 points per game (4th), 261.8 passing yards per game (5th), and had 23 rushing touchdowns on the season (1st). The defense, however, was the game changer for the Saints, thanks large-in-part to a stellar campaign from defensive end Cameron Jordan, who finished the season with 13 sacks, 48 tackles and two forced fumbles.

2018 Super Bowl Countdown: Super Bowl IV

Another day closer to Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, we’re taking a looking at Super Bowl IV between the Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs.

Super Bowl LII Minneapolis Countdown

January 11, 1970

In the fourth installment of the Super Bowl, the Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs squared off in what would go on to become an unforgettable championship. Played in New Orleans, Louisiana at Tulane Stadium, a very rainy yet exciting Super Bowl would take place in front of nearly 81,000 fans from all over the country.

Most experts went into this game predicting a victory by the NFL side of the Super Bowl, however the AFL member Kansas City Chiefs would prove them wrong, capturing a Super Bowl IV victory 23-7 over the Vikings.
