Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXXIII

As we embark on the Thanksgiving Day slate of games to kickoff Week 12 of the 2018 NFL season, Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta is seemingly just around the corner. And as we head back to Miami, Florida once again in 1999, the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons square off in Super Bowl XXXIII.

Back-to-Back Broncos

Nearly 75,000 fans were in attendance at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, Florida, as the Denver Broncos, after capturing their first championship in the Super Bowl the previous year, would capture Super Bowl XXXIII, defeating the Falcons by a score of 34-19.

Broncos quarterback John Elway would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors in 1999, throwing for 336 yards and one touchdown, as well as rushing for another. Elway would go down in history as the oldest player to date to be named Super Bowl MVP.

Gloria Estefan would be tapped to perform at Super Bowl XXXIII halftime, a performance that would be televised to over 83.7 million viewers worldwide! The cost of a 30-second commercial continued to rise, clocking in at $1.6 million, and broadcasting duties would be handled by the famed Pat Summerall and John Madden, as the Super Bowl was telecast on FOX Sports.

Road to Super Bowl 53: NFC South Preview

After a seemingly disappointing year in 2017 after such a successful campaign in the 2016 season, will the NFC South be able to rebound in the 2018 NFL season on the Road to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta?

New Orleans Saints

2017 Record: 11-5, NFC South Champions

After a relatively disappointing year in 2016, the New Orleans Saints rebounded in 2017, clawing their way to an 11-5 record and walking away winners of the NFC South via a tiebreaker with the Carolina Panthers.

The 2018 offseason was about not only securing the present, but preparing for life post-quarterback Drew Brees. While the status of Brees’ re-signing was up in the air, the Saints and Brees eventually agreed to a two-year contract extension, giving the Saints a few more years to prepare for the future. But that doesn’t mean the team is using Brees as a placeholder. The team reloaded on offense, signing former Browns running back Terrance West to pair with 2017 offensive standout rookie in Alvin Kamara. Returning wide receivers Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr., the team also signed former Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith, brought back tight end Benjamin Watson, and re-signed offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod.

Carolina Panthers

2017 Record: 11-5

After finishing second in the division and trading offensive playmaking wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, the Carolina Panthers were due for a minor reset in the 2018 offseason. However, a relatively quiet offseason leaves fans wondering what the 2018 edition of the Panthers might look like once they hit the field.

Running back Jonathan Stewart departed in favor of the New York Giants, All-Pro offensive lineman Andrew Norwell signed a monster contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and defensive playmakers Star Lotulelei and Kurt Coleman also chose to go elsewhere. To help buffer those losses, the Panthers brought in defensive backs Da’Norris Search and Mike Adams, defensive tackle Dontari Poe, and acquired wide receivers Torrey Smith (PHI) and D.J. Moore (2018 NFL Draft, #24 overall pick).

Atlanta Falcons

2017 Record: 10-6

Just a year removed from a standout campaign in 2016, which saw the team capture the #2 overall seed in the NFC Playoffs and a Super Bowl LI appearance against the New England Patriots, the Falcons seemingly regressed in 2017, finishing with a 10-6 record and failing to make the playoffs.

The headline of the 2018 offseason thus far for the Falcons (and the NFL, for that matter) has been the ongoing contract negotiations (or lack thereof) with wide receiver Julio Jones, who reportedly is ready to holdout amidst the talks.

On the transactional side, the Falcons were relatively quiet on the free agency front, bringing in players like defensive backs Leon McFadden and Justin Bethel. But it’s the team’s 1st-round draft pick that has fans excited.. Calvin Ridley, a lengthy wide receiver out of Alabama, who has drawn comparisons to Jones himself.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2017 Record: 5-11

After a disappointing 5-11 campaign in 2017, it appears the offseason made matters worse for Buccaneers fans across the country.

Re-signing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick became a priority the team didn’t know they needed after starting quarterback Jameis Winston received a three-game suspension due to conduct detrimental. And after losing running back Doug Martin (OAK) and a handful of key defensive contributors, the team was left looking at a minor rebuild.

Bulking up on the defensive side of the football, the Buccaneers signed Super Bowl champion defensive end Vinny Curry and acquired New York Giants standout Jason Pierre-Paul via trade, as well as drafting defensive tackle Vita Via out of Washington, adding to the depth of the defensive front-seven. To help on the offensive side, the team re-signed running back Charles Sims and drafted running back Ronald Jones out of USC to help carry the load.

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 25-32

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, finishing up with picks 26-32.

#26: Atlanta Falcons

CBS Sports: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida | Bleacher Report, NFL.com: Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia

“The Falcons don’t have many needs, but one spot they could be targeting in the first round is defensive tackle, with Dontari Poe only signing a one-year deal last offseason. Bryan has earned some J.J. Watt comparisons despite the lack of stats at the collegiate level, and he put up similar numbers to Watt at the combine. Defensive tackle is one of the Falcons’ few needs, and they’ll be fortunate if Bryan makes it to them.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#27: New Orleans Saints

CBS Sports: D.J. Moore, WR, Maryland | Bleacher Report: Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina | NFL.com: Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M

“The New Orleans Saints have a legitimate Super Bowl window at the end of Drew Brees‘ career. The best way to take advantage of that after nailing the 2017 draft is to get him a weapon for the middle of the field and up the seam. Hurst might get knocked for being an older prospect (25 at the start of the season) after playing minor league baseball for two seasons before playing college football, but he’s a stud. Hurst has the best combination of traits, as a pass-catcher and blocker, to get onto the field right away. In New Orleans, he’ll open up the entire offense for Brees, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas and Co.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#28: Pittsburgh Steelers

CBS Sports: Derrius Guice, RB, LSU | Bleacher Report: Malik Jefferson, LB, Texas | NFL.com:  Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State

“After signing Morgan Burnett to bolster the safety position, the Steelers turn their attention to linebacker, and find an instinctive one in Vander Esch” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#29: Jacksonville Jaguars

CBS Sports: Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma State | Bleacher Report: Mick McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame | NFL.com: Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota State

Blake Bortles signed an extension that doesn’t necessarily lock him into being the Jaguars‘ long-term option at the position. With value not on the board at other potential positions worth targeting, the Jaguars grab Rudolph with the hope they can develop him into a guy who can raise the ceiling on the offense higher than Bortles has shown capable.” –  R.J. White, CBS Sports

#30: Minnesota Vikings

CBS Sports (traded to Cleveland Browns): Connor Williams, OT, Texas | Bleacher Report: Billy Price, OG, Ohio State | NFL.com: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame

“Just call this Ohio State north. After drafting center Pat Elflein in the third round last year, the Minnesota Vikings can now select the guy who took his job and also played next to him in previous seasons. Price excelled at center in 2017, but in Minnesota he’d go back to playing guard and can be a dominant force there. Lining up these two maulers side by side and handing the ball off the Dalvin Cook makes this offense potent. Add in that Kirk Cousins needs interior pass protection, and suddenly the prospect of getting Price looks good.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#31: New England Patriots

CBS Sports, Bleacher Report, NFL.com: Kolton Miller, OT, UCLA

“The loss of starting LT Nate Solder to the Giants clears room for this athletically gifted youngster.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#32: Philadelphia Eagles

CBS Sports: Justin Reid, S, Stanford | Bleacher Report: Ronnie Harrison, S, Alabama | NFL.com: Josh Jackson, DB, Iowa

“With two potential tackle options coming off the board right before their pick, the Eagles pivot to taking Reid, a safety they’ve reportedly had a lot of interest inCorey Graham is a free agent, so Reid can come in and immediately fill the third safety role for the Philadelphia defense while giving them a long-term plan when Malcolm Jenkins or Rodney McLeod get too old or expensive to keep.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

2018 Super Bowl Countdown: Super Bowl LI

A Super Bowl for the history books. The final spot in our ‘Countdown to Super Bowl 52,’ a look back at Super Bowl LI in Houston between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons.

February 5, 2017

Despite jumping out to a 28-3 lead early, the Atlanta Falcons would fall capture to one of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s signature comebacks, with the Patriots completing the most improbably comeback in Super Bowl history, a 34-28 victory in the first ever Super Bowl overtime.

Brady would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors once again, tossing 466 yards and two touchdowns in a game that Patriots owner Robert Kraft would call “unequivocally the sweetest” Super Bowl victory of the Patriots’ dominant dynasty.

An average of 111.3 million viewers caught Super Bowl LI on FOX, and the cost of a 30-second spot stayed at the $5 million asking price from Super Bowl 50. Lady Gaga would perform a legendary halftime show at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

Road to Super Bowl 52: Wild Card Weekend

The Road to Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis is officially here! Taking a quick look at all the games slated to kick off the 2017-18 NFL Playoffs throughout Wild Card Weekend.

Tennessee Titans @ Kansas City Chiefs (Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET on ESPN)

Quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans (9-7), just one game short of an AFC South title and coming off a win-and-in victory in Week 17, will travel to Kansas City to take on the AFC West champion Chiefs (10-6) to kick off NFL Wild Card weekend.

After a strong start to the 2017 NFL season had Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith in the early NFL MVP conversation, the Chiefs seemed to cool down in the second half of the season, losing 6 of 7 games in the middle of the season after winning their first five, and ending on a four-game win streak, to finish the year with 10 wins. The Titans, on the other hand, struggled with injuries early on, most notably with Mariota and a nagging hamstring injury.

Atlanta Falcons @ Los Angeles Rams (Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET on NBC)

After a collapse in Super Bowl 51 in Houston, the Atlanta Falcons (10-6) seemingly struggled to overcome that “Super Bowl hangover” in 2017. Touting one of the highest-flying offenses in 2016, the Falcons ranked just 14th in points per game (22.1), and quarterback Matt Ryan cooled off after his MVP campaign in 2016, throwing just 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 65.7 percent of his passes.

The Los Angeles Rams (11-5) are the opposite. After an uninspiring campaign in 2016, the team brought in Sean McVay to be the new head coach, and the team was an offensive firestorm, leading the league in points per game (29.9), thanks large in part to a stellar season from running back Todd Gurley II, who finished the season with 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Buffalo Bills @ Jacksonville Jaguars (Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET on CBS)

Perhaps the most surprising Wild Card matchup of the playoffs kicks off our Sunday action, as the Buffalo Bills (9-7) travel to take on the AFC South champion Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6).

Boasting the second-ranked defense in the league, the Jaguars held their opponents to just 15.5 points per game in 2017, second only to the Minnesota Vikings’ 14.8. The Jaguars also relied heavily on the legs of running back Leonard Fournette, as the team finished at the top of the league in rushing yards per game (141.4) and second in rushing touchdowns (18).

The Buffalo Bills seemingly snuck their way into the playoffs, thanks to a game-winning touchdown in Week 17 from the Cincinnati Bengals, defeating the Baltimore Ravens. When you look at the statistics, the Bills seem to have no business being in the playoffs, ranking second-to-last in passing yards per game (176.6), 27th in passing touchdowns (16) and 29th in sacks (27). However, the team ranked 6th overall in rushing yards per game (126.1), thanks large in part to running back LeSean McCoy.

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints (Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET on FOX)

One of the more highly anticipated matchups in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs is the Carolina Panthers (11-5) traveling to New Orleans to take on the NFC South champion Saints (11-5). These teams will face off for the third time this season (second in New Orleans) as both are members of the NFC South, which has a staggering three of its four teams in the playoffs.

Despite struggles early in the season, the Panthers offense returned to form, ranking 4th in rushing yards per game (131.4) and 7th in rushing touchdowns (15), thanks to a committee of quarterback Cam Newton and running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jonathan Stewart. The defense was also nothing to balk at, ranking near the top of the league in getting after the opponent’s quarterbacks (3rd – 50 sacks in 2017).

The Saints, whom plenty were ready to write off at the beginning of the season, were one of the best teams in the NFL in 2017. The offense, ranked near the top of the league in every statistical category, was a powerhouse, averaging 28 points per game (4th), 261.8 passing yards per game (5th), and had 23 rushing touchdowns on the season (1st). The defense, however, was the game changer for the Saints, thanks large-in-part to a stellar campaign from defensive end Cameron Jordan, who finished the season with 13 sacks, 48 tackles and two forced fumbles.

NFL Schedule Highlights

Everybody loves summer, but we’re all ready to get back to football. We decided to take a look at the entire 2017 NFL season and highlight some of the best matchups on the road to Super Bowl LII.

Week 7: Atlanta Falcons @ New England Patriots

Not much needs to be said about this Week 7 matchup, aside from the fact that it might be the most highly anticipated game of the upcoming season.

After blowing a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI, the Atlanta Falcons will travel to Foxboro to face the reigning Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, a matchup that the Falcons are sure to have scheduled on their calendars. 2016 league MVP Matt Ryan and Super Bowl LI MVP Tom Brady will square off once again in an offensively high-flying matchup.

Week 2: Green Bay Packers @ Atlanta Falcons

Another rematch highlights the 2017 NFL season, this time, the NFC Championship Game from the 2016 season. The Packers will travel to the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta to take on the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons, the first home game at the new stadium for the team.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and company will be look to exact revenge on the Falcons, following a 44-21 beatdown in January.

Week 15: Dallas Cowboys @ Oakland Raiders

Two of the most surprising teams in the NFL for the 2016 season, the Dallas Cowboys will travel to Oakland to take on the Oakland (Las Vegas?) Raiders.

Entering their second seasons, the dynamic duo of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott will be looking to expand upon their successful 2016 campaigns. Meanwhile, the Oakland Raiders anxiously await the return of quarterback Derek Carr, who broke his leg late in the season in 2016.

2017 Expert NFL Mock Draft (#26-32)

The day before the 2017 NFL Draft, find out who experts believe will go #26-32, rounding out the first round on Thursday night.

#26: Seattle Seahawks

CBS Sports: Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida | Bleacher Report, MMQB: Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wiscosin |

“Ryan Ramczyk is am[sic] intriguing option, given his tools and tape, but he started just one season at Wisconsin and is dealing with a torn labrum that’s limiting his pre-draft workouts. The tools are there when you watch him in Big Ten tape, but you’re betting on his continued development on a small sample size.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#27: Kansas City Chiefs

CBS Sports: Raekwon McMillan, LB, Ohio State | Bleacher Report: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech | MMQB: Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama

“With Derrick Johnson set to turn 35 next season, McMillian is an athletic playmaker who could provide a smooth transition once Johnson calls it a career. Vanderbilt’s Zach Cunningham is also an option here, but a lackluster combine could have personnel types revisiting his game tape.” – Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports

#28: Dallas Cowboys

CBS Sports: Carl Lawson, DE, Auburn | Bleacher Report: Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee | MMQB: David Njoku, TE, Miami

“The classic “excellent veteran is aging, so let’s find him a replacement” scenario surfaces yet again. Here, Jerry Jones finds a successor for Jason Witten. Njoku, one of the youngest players in this year’s draft (he turns 21 in July) has a high ceiling, as he has only been playing tight end for two years. A core featuring Njoku, Dak Prescott (23-years-old) and Ezekiel Elliott (21)? That will keep Dallas front-running in the NFC East for years to come.” – Emily Kaplan, MMQB

#29: Green Bay Packers

CBS Sports: T.J. Watt, LB, Wisconsin | Bleacher Report: Forrest Lamp, OG, Western Kentucky | MMQB: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford

“The Packers are in the market for pass rushers. And what’s better than having one Clay Matthews? Having two — Watt (yep, he’s J.J.’s younger brother) has drawn comparisons to Matthews. Measuring 6-5, 243, Watt ran a 4.69 40 at the combine, and finished last season with 11.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss.” – Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports

#30: Pittsburgh Steelers

CBS Sports: Derek Rivers, DE, Youngstown State | Bleacher Report: Takkarist McKinley, EDGE, UCLA | MMQB: T.J. Watt, LB, Wisconsin

“Takkarist McKinley is tailor-made for the 3-4 pass-rusher role the Steelers need. He’s long, physical, fast and has the production on tape to warrant a first-round selection. He is undergoing shoulder surgery as I’m writing this for a torn labrum, but will be back in time for minicamp. After an impressive showing in Indianapolis, McKinley should be a first-rounder.” –Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#31: Atlanta Falcons

CBS Sports, MMQB: Charles Harris, DE, Missouri | Bleacher Report: Montravius Adams, DL, Auburn |

“The Falcons could use pass-rushers. The going rule in today’s NFL is that you need three good ones to be successful. Pair Harris with the Clemson crew (Vic Beasley and Grady Jarrett, coming off a breakout Super Bowl performance), and Atlanta has a trio to harass quarterbacks of the NFC South for a very long time.” – Emily Kaplan, MMQB

#32: New England Patriots

CBS Sports: David Njoku, TE, Miami | Bleacher Report: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford | MMQB: Tim Williams, LB, Alabama

“McCaffrey is a dynamic running back, a versatile offensive weapon and a top-notch athlete. Whether he’s in New England, Kansas City or Green Bay (my ideal fits) he’ll be a threat as a runner, receiver and return man. However you can get him touches, he’ll respond with yards and points.” –Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

NFL 2016-17 Season In Review

Completed by one of the most memorable Super Bowls to date, the 2016-17 NFL Season was one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory. From the conclusion of “Deflate Gate,” to Brady’s redemption, to the first year without “The Sheriff” and the rise of the Atlanta Falcons. We take a walk down memory lane and review the season that was in the NFL.

The “Rise” of the MVP

The surprise team of the 2016-17 NFL season was without a doubt, the Atlanta Falcons. Behind a stellar offensive attack and a surprisingly stingy defense, the Falcons claimed their first NFC title in decades, due large in part to league MVP, quarterback Matt Ryan.

Ryan finished the 2016 campaign with career-bests in yards (4,994), touchdowns (38), interceptions (7), completion percentage (69.9%) and quarterback ratings (117.1). The evening before his Super Bowl LI appearance, Ryan would go on to be named the 2016 NFL MVP.

First Year Without Peyton

The 2016-17 NFL season marked the first year since 1997 that former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos quarterback and two-time Super Bowl winner Peyton Manning would not be under center. “The Sheriff” announced his retirement after his Super Bowl 50 victory in 2016 with the Denver Broncos, marking the end of his illustrious 18-year career. Sophomore quarterback Trevor Siemian would take over for the Broncos, although Denver would miss the playoffs.

Deflate Gate Revenge

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady would finally go on to serve his four-game suspension, despite his multiple appeals, relating to the “Deflate Gate” drama from years prior. Despite Brady missing the first four games, the Patriots would be led to a 3-1 record by quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett, leaving the door open for Brady to come back and complete one of his best statistical seasons to date.

Super Bowl LI

The Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots would square off in Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, in what would become one of the most exciting Super Bowls to date.

Atlanta would hold a 28-9 lead heading into the 4th quarter, but with “Tom Terrific” leading the way, the Patriots were not to be counted out. Mounting the largest comeback in Super Bowl history, and creating the first overtime Super Bowl in league history, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots would capture their 5th Super Bowl trophy in the Belichick-Brady era. Brady would take home Super Bowl MVP, throwing for a Super Bowl record 466 yards and two touchdowns on 62 pass attempts.

The 2017 Players Tailgate was rated the #1 pre-game experience in Houston throughout Super Bowl LI weekend. Click to learn more about the 2018 Players Tailgate at Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, or Bullseye’s other events such as Gate 6 Hospitality at The Masters.

Road to Super Bowl LI: Championship Weekend

It’s been narrowed down to four teams, and on Sunday, two will punch their ticket to Super Bowl LI in Houston. It’s the AFC and NFC Championship Games, featured in this week’s NFL Playoff preview.

NFC Championship Game: Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons (3:05 p.m. ET, FOX)

The red-hot Green Bay Packers travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons in what will be a game charged with emotion for the Atlanta faithful.

Not only is it Atlanta’s first NFC Championship berth in years, this will also be the final Falcons game played inside the historic Georgia Dome, which has been home to not only the Falcons, but numerous events, championships and concerts over the years. Next year, the Falcons will christen the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Stadium, located directly beside the Georgia Dome.

For the Packers, it was all about “running the table” to make the playoffs. Now, a team that has beaten both the surging New York Giants and 2016 darling Dallas Cowboys, the Packers looked primed to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since Super Bowl XLV in 2011.

AFC Championship Game: Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots (6:40 p.m. ET, CBS)

Old rivals square off in Sunday’s AFC Championship game between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Quarterbacks Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger, friends off the field and two of the greatest in the league, will go head-to-head once again for the AFC title at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

The Patriots are looking to head to their 7th Super Bowl in the Brady-Belichick era, winners of four of their previous six appearances. The Steelers look to make their 4th Super Bowl appearance since 2008, beginning with a victory against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL in Detroit.

Want to check the Super Bowl off your bucket list? Travel packages to Super Bowl LI in Houston are available now! Including some of the most luxurious hotels in Houston, a ticket to the 2017 Players Tailgate featuring America’s favorite chef, Guy Fieri, and a ticket to the big game!
