2019 NFL Schedule: Top Matchups

Just days from the 2019 NFL Draft,  the NFL announced the regular season slate for all 32 teams, highlighted by title game rematches and some big-time matchups. A look at the highlights of the 256-game schedule.

Week 1: Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears

To kick off the ‘Road to Super Bowl 54’ in Miami, the NFL bucked the tradition of having the defending Super Bowl champions host the opening game, opting to instead highlight the league’s 100th anniversary by showcasing one of the league’s most historic rivalries.

Last season’s Week 1 matchup between the Bears and Packers proved to be one of the more exciting games of the entire season, seeing Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers tossing three second-half touchdown after an injury, leading the Pack to a 24-23 victory.

Week 2: New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Rams

One of the most anticipated rematches of the last decade in the NFL, the #1 seed in the NFC last season, the New Orleans Saints, travel to LA to face off against the reigning NFC champion Rams in a rematch of the 2018 NFC Championship game.

This past offseason, the NFL expanded its use of instant replay to include missed pass interference calls, directly in response to the blatant missed call at the end of the NFC Championship game. The rematch of these two teams promises bad blood, fireworks, and offensive displays of firepower that could easily make the matchup the best game of the 2019 season.

Week 5: Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs

A rematch of the 2018 divisional playoff game, the Chiefs come into the season reigning AFC West champions and easily the favorite in the AFC. The Indianapolis Colts, however, have reloaded their roster, and look to capitalize on a promising 2018 campaign, most notably adding former Chiefs pass rusher Justin Houston the an already formidable defensive front.

Week 14: Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots

Another rematch from the 2018 playoff slate, the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots once again welcome quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs into Gillette Stadium in a rematch of the 2018 AFC Championship game.

Sporting two of the more electrifying matchups from the 2018 season, both the Patriots and Chiefs remain atop the AFC’s Super Bowl favorites, and it appears possible the two could be headed for an AFC title game rematch as well.

2019 Super Bowl: Top Possible Matchups

Past the halfway point on the Road to Super Bowl 53, the 2018 NFL season enters Week 10 with plenty of teams emerging as conference favorites. So what are some of the top matchups we could see when teams hit the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia in February 2019?

Kansas City Chiefs (8-1) vs. Los Angeles Rams (8-1)

One of the NFL’s elite offenses meets the best statistical defense in the league in this hypothetical matchup, as the two current-conference leaders, primed for #1 seeds and home field advantage in the playoffs, meet in Super Bowl 53.

A lone last-second loss to the New England Patriots stands between the Chiefs and an undefeated record, but that doesn’t deter any excitement when it comes to this Chiefs offense. Something many didn’t see come, the Chiefs are led by an early MVP-favorite in quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has completed 66% of his passes for 2,526 yards and a league-leading 26 touchdowns.

Quarterback Jared Goff has seemingly made another leap under head coach Sean McVay, completing 68% of his passes for 2,425 yards and 17 touchdowns thus far. The feature of the Rams offense, the aforementioned Gurley, leads the league in rushing with 800 yards and 11 touchdowns through the first eight games.

The Kansas City Chiefs, sitting at 8-1 and led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is progressing at a record-setting pace, would meet the high-flying Los Angeles Rams, who for the second-straight season are leaving many surprised. Despite coming off a loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 9, the Rams remain heavy favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

New England Patriots (7-2) vs. Los Angeles Rams (8-1)

The classic Boston vs. Los Angeles matchup comes to the NFL. After decades of the historic rivalry of the Boston Celtics vs. the Los Angeles Lakers, and on the heels of a Boston Red Sox World Series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the NFL’s version of this historic rivalry could make its way to Atlanta in 2019.

After starting 1-2, the New England Patriots are on a six-game win streak, led by none other than five-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. As long as Brady and Belichick continue to lead the way, the Patriots will continue to be odds-on favorites to reach the Super Bowl.

Kansas City Chiefs (8-1) vs. New Orleans Saints (7-1)

The offensive matchup that would create fireworks would most likely be the Kansas City Chiefs meeting the New Orleans Saints in Atlanta for Super Bowl 53. The two highest-scoring offenses in the NFL, the Chiefs (36.3) and Saints (34.9) are both scoring at lightning paces, which would make for an exciting Super Bowl matchup.

Quarterback Drew Brees, in a year where he set the record for most passing yards in NFL history, has thrown for 1,990 yards and 14 touchdowns, with Pro Bowl wide receiver Michael Thomas and running back Alvin Kamara seeing the lion-share of those targets (55% of Brees’ completions).

Not to be outdone, the Saints defense ranks #1 in rushing yards allowed per game, holding their opponents to an incredible 74.1 yards per game. With Brees at the helm and a solidified defensive from anchored by defensive end Cam Jordan and cornerback Marcus Lattimore, the Saints can never be counted out to make it to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta in 2019.

2019 Super Bowl 53: Mid-Season Favorites

Officially through Week 8 of the 2018-19 NFL season, the regular season has reached its halfway point. So what’s teams are looking like the league favorites to head to Atlanta at the end of the season for Super Bowl 53?

Los Angeles Rams (8-0, 1st in NFC West)

Touting one of the best offenses in the NFL (and the #1 rushing attack featuring running back Todd Gurley), the Los Angeles Rams once again find themselves the darlings of the NFL season, standing alone as the remaining unbeaten team at 8-0.

Until someone steps up and dethrones the Rams as the league’s lone undefeated team, the Rams will remain a heavy favorite to be the NFC representative in Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta.

Kansas City Chiefs (7-1, 1st in AFC West)

One of the biggest surprises of the 2018 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs tout the league’s most prominent offense when it comes to scoring, racking up a staggering 36.2 points per game so far in the first half of the season.

As long as Mahomes is continuing to sling it, and key playmakers such as running back Kareem Hunt and wide receiver Tyreek Hill can remain healthy, this Chiefs team will remain one of the favorites to reach Super Bowl 53 in 2019.

New Orleans Saints (6-1, 1st in NFC South)

After a disappointing end to the 2017 campaign following the “minneapolis miracle joe buck” the New Orleans Saints have surprised many, sporting the second-highest scoring offense (33.4 points per game) in the NFL to go alongside their staunch defensive front.

New England Patriots (6-2, 1st in AFC East)

Is it really a Super Bowl favorites “preview” without the New England Patriots? Despite another slow start to the season, the Patriots, touting the league’s fourth-ranked offense in points per game (29.9), have rattled off five-straight wins, most recently a 25-6 drubbing of the AFC East-rival Buffalo Bills.

One can argue that as long as head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady remain at the helm, the Patriots will continue to be favored to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. And if the team can capitalize on the early five-game win streak and big divisional lead, they’ll be a favorite to reach Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta in February.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XIV

As we continue on the Road to the 2019 Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta, the Los Angeles Rams make their first appearance in the Super Bowl 53 Countdown, facing off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIV.

Hometown LA Rams Fall to Steelers

Played at the gorgeous Rose Bowl in sunny Pasadena, California in front of nearly 104,000 fans, the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers met for the first time in Super Bowl XIV. Pittsburgh would capture yet another Super Bowl title, defeating the Rams by a score of 31-19. This was the first time the NFL had a team that hailed from the same surrounding area as the Super Bowl host, with the Los Angeles Rams playing just 14 miles from the LA Memorial Coliseum.

The Steelers also made history in Super Bowl XIV by becoming the first team to capture four Super Bowl titles, doing so in just a six-year span. The game was close for the majority of Super Bowl XIV, with Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw connecting with wide receiver Lynn Swann for a 47-yard touchdown pass, highlighting the Steelers victory. Bradshaw would go on to win Super Bowl XIV MVP award honors, finishing the game with 309 yards and two touchdowns.

Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier would once again handle the broadcast duties at the Super Bowl, broadcast on CBS in 1980. A 30-second commercial continued to rise in price, standing around $222,000 for Super Bowl XIV. The halftime show entertainment was provided by Up with People, presenting “A Salute to the Big Band Era.” Interesting enough, the Nielson Rating was 46.3 with an estimated 76.2 million viewers tuning into Super Bowl XIV.

Road to Super Bowl 53: NFC West Preview

A change at the top in what looks to be promising future for the entirety of the NFC West headlined the 2017 NFL season. And despite faltering in the playoffs, the future for most of the NFC West appears to be bright, with one of the hottest new teams setting their sights on Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta.

Los Angeles Rams

2017 Record: 11-5, NFC West Champions

The surprise of the 2017 NFL season, rookie head coach Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams jumped out to a 7-2 start on the season before cooling off to finish at 11-5. And despite losing in the Wild Card round to the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons, fans appear to be impressed with what the Rams produced.. and they didn’t stop there.

Many are crowning the Rams as the ‘winners’ of the 2018 NFL Free Agency period, bringing in key additions (and big names) like defensive backs Marcus Peters (Kansas City), Sam Shields (Green Bay) and Aqib Talib (Denver), defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh (Miami) and wide receiver Brandin Cooks (New England). With such big names, and a seemingly successful campaign in 2017, expectations are rightfully high as we approach the beginning of a new season.

Seattle Seahawks

2017 Record: 9-7

Opposite of their division-rivals in 2017, the Seattle Seahawks had a seemingly ‘down’ year in 2017, finishing at 9-7 and missing the playoffs.

The Seahawks weren’t content with trying for different results with the same team, opting to reload the roster through free agency with a slew of one-year contracts, including wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Jaron Brown, defensive pass rusher Barkevious Mingo, and boosting their secondary by signing defensive backs Mo Alexander,  and Dontae Johnson.

Fans will be left adjusting to a massively-different look for the Seahawks on defense, featuring the departures of staples such as cornerback Richard Sherman, who signed with the division-rival 49ers, and safety Kam Chancellor, who announced his retirement in late June.

Arizona Cardinals

2017 Record: 8-8

In what seemed to be an odd year for the Cardinals, 2017 saw the team win and lose nearly every-other game, losing key players such as quarterback Carson Palmer to injury once again. And in the 2018 offseason, the Cardinals saw plenty of change.

Head coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Carson Palmer respectively announced their retirements early in the offseason, setting in motion a season of change in all aspects for Big Red. Bringing in quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon to battle for the starting spot, and drafting rookie quarterback Josh Rosen out of UCLA, ensures the team has plenty of competition in the QB room. The team also added some offensive weapons in the receiving corps, signing former Dallas Cowboy Brice Butler and drafting the talented Christian Kirk out of Texas A&M.

San Francisco 49ers

2017 Record: 6-10

Quite possibly on of the more intriguing storylines to watch heading into the 2018 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers started the 2017 season 0-9 and were seemingly playing for the draft. However, a mid-season trade their newly-minted franchise quarterback in former Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo helped spark the team’s wining 6 of their last 7 games to finish at 6-10.

Aside from trading for their franchise-quarterback, the 49ers did plenty in the 2018 offseason to help build around him, bringing in playmakers like former Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon, securing the offensive line and signing former division-rival cornerback Richard Sherman on defense. In the draft, the 49ers, grabbed a solid offensive line presence in Notre Dame right tackle Mike McGlinchey in the first round before grabbing Washington wide receiver and playmaker Dante Pettis in the second.

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 21-25

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 21-25.

#21: Cincinnati Bengals

CBS Sports: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame | Bleacher Report: James Daniels, OL, Iowa | NFL.com: Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina

“The Bengals took a step toward addressing their offensive line woes by acquiring left tackle Cordy Glenn from the Bills and moving down to this pick. They should keep adding talent to the position with McGlinchey, who is a fit at either tackle spot. He’ll slot in at right tackle initially but could move to the left side if Glenn can’t stay healthy. Either way, drafting the Notre Dame standout puts the Bengals halfway to fixing their line issues.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#22: Buffalo Bills

CBS Sports: Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU | Bleacher Report (traded to Indianapolis Colts): Derrius Guice, RB, LSU | NFL.com: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida

“As part of the predicted trade for pick No. 6 overall, the Indianapolis Colts add this selection and get the workhorse running back they can plug in right behind Andrew Luck in Week 1.One of my philosophies is that a good running back makes the quarterback’s life easier, and that’s exactly what the physical, punishing, mean Guice would be as Luck gets back onto the field this season. The best way to take pressure off Luck is to give him a bell-cow back.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#23: Los Angeles Rams

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama | Bleacher Report: Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State

“The trade of Alec Ogletree to the Giants opens a spot for this gifted LB. Like so many of recent vintage from ‘Bama, Evans runs well, and is well-versed in pro-style scheme, and reasoning. Plus, he makes an impact as soon as he arrives.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#24: Carolina Panthers

CBS Sports: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama | Bleacher Report, NFL.com: Jaire Alexander, DB, Louisville

“The first order of business for returning general manager Marty Hurney in this draft should be fixing the mess his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, left at cornerback. Even considering how badly the team needs upgrades on the offensive line and at wide receiver, the secondary should get a look first.Louisville’s Jaire Alexander might not fit the size profile for some teams at 5’10 ¼” and 196 pounds, and he was banged up in 2017 with hand and leg injuries, but he’s a physical player at the line of scrimmage and in coverage. Alexander can match up with taller receivers thanks to his speed and instincts. His tool set would make him the Panthers’ best cornerback right away.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#25: Tennessee Titans

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Harold Landry, LB, Boston College | Bleacher Report: Sam Hubbard, EDGE, Ohio State

“Landry is an athletic freak as an edge rusher, but he’ll likely be better served not playing a large role as a rookie while he adjusts to the NFL and potentially bulks up. That should be just fine for the Titans, who will have a huge need at edge rusher next offseason with Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan slated to reach free agency. Landry can be a subpackage player in Year 1 and eventually take over one of those starting spots in 2019.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

Road to Super Bowl 52: Wild Card Weekend

The Road to Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis is officially here! Taking a quick look at all the games slated to kick off the 2017-18 NFL Playoffs throughout Wild Card Weekend.

Tennessee Titans @ Kansas City Chiefs (Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET on ESPN)

Quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans (9-7), just one game short of an AFC South title and coming off a win-and-in victory in Week 17, will travel to Kansas City to take on the AFC West champion Chiefs (10-6) to kick off NFL Wild Card weekend.

After a strong start to the 2017 NFL season had Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith in the early NFL MVP conversation, the Chiefs seemed to cool down in the second half of the season, losing 6 of 7 games in the middle of the season after winning their first five, and ending on a four-game win streak, to finish the year with 10 wins. The Titans, on the other hand, struggled with injuries early on, most notably with Mariota and a nagging hamstring injury.

Atlanta Falcons @ Los Angeles Rams (Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET on NBC)

After a collapse in Super Bowl 51 in Houston, the Atlanta Falcons (10-6) seemingly struggled to overcome that “Super Bowl hangover” in 2017. Touting one of the highest-flying offenses in 2016, the Falcons ranked just 14th in points per game (22.1), and quarterback Matt Ryan cooled off after his MVP campaign in 2016, throwing just 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 65.7 percent of his passes.

The Los Angeles Rams (11-5) are the opposite. After an uninspiring campaign in 2016, the team brought in Sean McVay to be the new head coach, and the team was an offensive firestorm, leading the league in points per game (29.9), thanks large in part to a stellar season from running back Todd Gurley II, who finished the season with 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Buffalo Bills @ Jacksonville Jaguars (Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET on CBS)

Perhaps the most surprising Wild Card matchup of the playoffs kicks off our Sunday action, as the Buffalo Bills (9-7) travel to take on the AFC South champion Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6).

Boasting the second-ranked defense in the league, the Jaguars held their opponents to just 15.5 points per game in 2017, second only to the Minnesota Vikings’ 14.8. The Jaguars also relied heavily on the legs of running back Leonard Fournette, as the team finished at the top of the league in rushing yards per game (141.4) and second in rushing touchdowns (18).

The Buffalo Bills seemingly snuck their way into the playoffs, thanks to a game-winning touchdown in Week 17 from the Cincinnati Bengals, defeating the Baltimore Ravens. When you look at the statistics, the Bills seem to have no business being in the playoffs, ranking second-to-last in passing yards per game (176.6), 27th in passing touchdowns (16) and 29th in sacks (27). However, the team ranked 6th overall in rushing yards per game (126.1), thanks large in part to running back LeSean McCoy.

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints (Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET on FOX)

One of the more highly anticipated matchups in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs is the Carolina Panthers (11-5) traveling to New Orleans to take on the NFC South champion Saints (11-5). These teams will face off for the third time this season (second in New Orleans) as both are members of the NFC South, which has a staggering three of its four teams in the playoffs.

Despite struggles early in the season, the Panthers offense returned to form, ranking 4th in rushing yards per game (131.4) and 7th in rushing touchdowns (15), thanks to a committee of quarterback Cam Newton and running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jonathan Stewart. The defense was also nothing to balk at, ranking near the top of the league in getting after the opponent’s quarterbacks (3rd – 50 sacks in 2017).

The Saints, whom plenty were ready to write off at the beginning of the season, were one of the best teams in the NFL in 2017. The offense, ranked near the top of the league in every statistical category, was a powerhouse, averaging 28 points per game (4th), 261.8 passing yards per game (5th), and had 23 rushing touchdowns on the season (1st). The defense, however, was the game changer for the Saints, thanks large-in-part to a stellar campaign from defensive end Cameron Jordan, who finished the season with 13 sacks, 48 tackles and two forced fumbles.

Colts Weekly Update: @ Los Angeles Rams

The 2017 NFL season is officially here! After a seemingly long offseason, we are finally back to football, which means the Indianapolis Colts are back in action, looking to bounce back from a down year in 2016. Recapping what we learned from the team’s trip to Los Angeles to take on the Rams in Week 1.

Indianapolis Colts 2017 Season

Needing A Little ‘Luck’

After the Colts lost to the Rams in Week 1 by a score of 49-6, one thing became incredibly evident in the post game statistics; the Colts desperately need a healthy Andrew Luck.

Backup quarterback and the starter for Week 1, Scott Tolzien, a 7th-year man out of Wisconsin, struggled mightily against the Rams, completing just 9 of 18 passes for 128 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions, both returned for Rams touchdowns. Late in the game, Tolzien was replaced by the newly-acquired Jacoby Brissett, who was able to complete just two of his three pass attempts, though one being completion of 50 yards to wide receiver Donte Moncrief that would eventually lead to the team’s only touchdown of the day.

After the game, Colts head coach Chuck Pagano would not clarify who would start for the team in Week 2 if Luck remained on the sidelines, stating the staff would “look at everything” before making that decision.

A Diamond in the Rough

A glimmer of hope for some of the new young faces on the Colts was rookie running back Marlon Mack. The rookie carried the ball 10 times for just 24 yards, but managed to capture the Colts’ first (and only) touchdown of the day in the 4th quarter. Mack also had one reception for 21 yards, and was robbed of a touchdown on the catch early in the 1st quarter when the officials ruled him out at the one-yard-line.

Trust the Process

One thing that new Colts general manager Chris Ballard has preached all year is that the reshaping of this team is going to “take some time,” and that the front office is very much planning for the future beyond this season. That “have patience” mantra has been evident in the team’s cautious approach to quarterback Andrew Luck’s rehabilitation from shoulder surgery, and it was apparent on the field yesterday.

2017 NFL Offseason Headlines: Week of June 12

The “Road to the Super Bowl” begins behind the scenes through the months of June and July for all NFL teams. However, “behind the scenes” can make for quite a boring offseason for football fans everywhere. We’re taking a look at the biggest stories from the week of June 12, 2017, in the league that never sleeps.

Former No. 2 Overall Pick Traded

With the 2nd overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, the St. Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams select offensive tackle Greg Robinson out of Auburn. And after just three seasons with the team, Rams general manager Les Snead traded Robinson to the Detroit Lions on Thursday in exchange for a 2018 6th-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Robinson’s arrival in Detroit comes on the heels of an announcement that Detroit’s starting left tackle, Taylor Decker, could miss four to six months with a torn labrum.

2017 No. 1 Pick Myles Garret Sidelined

On Wednesday during the Cleveland Browns’ team minicamp drills, the first overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Myles Garrett, went down on the field with what would later be revealed as a foot injury, leaving Browns fans to worry about the severity of the injury.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, despite sitting out Thursday’s activities, Garrett is “fine,” and the injury to the linebacker is just a minor setback.

Odell Beckham Jr. Makes Statement with Cleats

After it was reported last week that New York Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was unhappy with his current contract situation, and the media frenzy surrounding his choice to not attend voluntary offseason organized team activities, Beckham was in attendance for the team’s mandatory minicamps on Tuesday. But per usual with Beckham, it wasn’t without a catch.

The 24-year-old All-Pro wide receiver donned cleats during the practice that seemed to make a nice gesture toward the media, choosing to “let his cleats do the talking.”
