Road to Miami: 2019 NFL Free Agency Winners & Losers

As teams begin to shift their focus toward the 2019 NFL Draft, we’re looking back at the free agency winners and losers on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami.

Winners

Cleveland Browns

“The Browns are building a powerhouse. Believe it. Those are words that don’t seem to go together, but General Manager John Dorsey continues to push the right buttons. He gave up plenty to the New York Giants in the trade for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., but it was well worth it. The Browns get perhaps the game’s most dynamic player.

They’ll have to deal with expectations, for a change, and they’ll have a rookie head coach in Freddie Kitchens. But having expectations is a good problem to have.” — Mark Maske, Washington Post

Green Bay Packers

“The Packers ranked 22nd in points allowed, 22nd in rushing yards allowed, 19th in turnover differential and just weren’t able to get enough key stops on defense when it mattered most. As a result, we saw a rare strategy from Green Bay: spend big in free agency.

The Packers added linebackers Preston Smith (four years, $52 million) and Za’Darius Smith (four years, $66 million), as well as safety Adrian Amos (four years, $37 million) to help fix a mediocre to below-average defense. Amos’ addition also hurts the Packers’ biggest rival and top competitor in the NFC North division, the Chicago Bears.” — Nick Goss, NBC Sports

Indianapolis Colts

Selective and patient. Colts general manager Chris Ballard didn’t let last season’s 10-6 record and playoff appearance dictate how he would attack the offseason. He has been selective in how he has used the NFL’s most salary-cap space by signing just two outside free agents — defensive end Justin Houston and receiver Devin Funchess. He has remained patient and is committed to continuing to build the roster through the draft. The Colts currently have nine picks later this month.” — Mike Wells, ESPN.com

New York Jets

“Winning free agency in March rarely translates into winning games between September and December. But the Jets, like the Raiders, were in desperate need of upgrading the roster, and they have taken positive steps by adding running back Le’Veon Bell, wide receiver Jamison Crowder and linebacker C.J. Mosley.

On offense, it’s all about aiding the development of young quarterback Sam Darnold. And the arrivals of Bell and Crowder help greatly in that regard.” — Mark Maske, Washington Post

Losers

New York Giants

“If the best organizations follow a clear vision, what can we say about the Giants?

The Giants now have one of the NFL’s least-talented rosters, and hope for improving it is limited by their decision to let Collins walk away (rather than making a trade) and settling for a modest return in the Beckham trade. They don’t seem to be following a linear plan and are years late on initiating a succession plan at quarterback. It is as though the Giants — and general manager Dave Gettleman in particular — are operating in a long-discarded era of NFL team building.” — Kevin Seifert, ESPN.com

Pittsburgh Steelers

“The Steelers acquired just third- and fifth-round draft picks, as well as no salary cap relief, from the Raiders in exchange for Antonio Brown (arguably the league’s top wide receiver). Pittsburgh also wasn’t able to re-sign star running back Le’Veon Bell, and there are no running backs on the free agent market capable of adequately replacing him. The Steelers haven’t added any key pieces to a defense that was mediocre last season, either.

Could we finally be seeing the end of the Steelers’ run as a top contender in the AFC? It sure looks like it.” — Nick Goss, NBC Sports

Tennessee Titans

“The Titans were one of the most active teams in the NFL, making three major deals by signing offensive lineman Rodger Saffold, receiver Adam Humphries and defensive end Cameron Wake while also re-signing Vaccaro at safety. I’m just not certain what to make of it.

On the one hand, giving Wake $10 million guaranteed at age 37 seems excessively hopeful. But on the other, giving relatively inaccurate quarterback Marcus Mariota a productive slot receiver in Humphries seems like a good idea. Saffold, assuming he is healthy, fits the smashmouth run style the Titans are expected to pursue.

I understand the Titans’ incentive after they were in the AFC South division race until Week 17 last season. But will this eclectic haul do anything to push them past the Texans and Colts?” — Kevin Seifert, ESPN.com

Washington Redskins

“[Safety Landon] Collins is an excellent player who will help the defense. But $84 million to a safety? Some in and around the league were baffled about that.” — Mark Maske, Washington Post

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXXIV

Just over 70 days from kicking off Super Bowl 53 in 2019 in Atlanta, we’re heading back to an instant classic; Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000 between the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans.

Super Bowl Y2K

A new millennium ushered in a new era of Super Bowl greatness for the NFL, with Super Bowl XXXIV being played as the first in the 2000’s. The game, played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georiga, would be widely remembered for the final drive, the final play, where Titans quarterback Steve McNair completed a pass to wide receiver Kevin Dyson, who would fall just one yard short of a touchdown as time expired that would have given the Titans the opportunity to tie the game. The Rams, dubbed the “Greatest Show on Turf,” would capture the victory 23-16.

Rams quarterback Kurt Warner would put on an aerial show in Super Bowl XXXIV, completing 24 of his 25 passes for 414 yards and two touchdowns, and going on to be named Super Bowl MVP.

Over 88.5 million fans tuned in to catch Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000 on ABC, broadcasted by the famed Al Michaels and Boomer Esiason. The cost of a 30-second commercial in 2000 was up to $1.1 million, and halftime was performed by Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera and Enrique Iglesias.

Road to Super Bowl 53: AFC South Preview

The ‘Road to Super Bowl 53’ is just under a month from officially kicking off for teams heading to training camp. Could 2018 be the year of the AFC South’s rise?

Jacksonville Jaguars

2017 Record: 10-6, AFC South Champions

One of the biggest surprises of the 2017 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars not only won the AFC South, but were runners-up in the AFC Championship, facing off against the New England Patriots.

When you rise to a 10-6 record and one-win away from the Super Bowl, you don’t mess with the formula too much. That’s why the Jacksonville Jaguars had what could be considered a relatively-quiet offseason. The team did choose to move on from wide receiver Allen Robinson, instead signing former Colts wide receiver Donte Moncrief, and getting what many considered the best offensive lineman in free agency in former Panthers tackle Andrew Norwell.

Tennessee Titans

2017 Record: 9-7

An injury to quarterback Marcus Mariota left the Titans struggling to keep up with the Jaguars in 2017, but that didn’t stop the team from reloading in the 2018 offseason.

The team signed a pair of prized former Patriots in running back Dion Lewis and defensive back Malcom Butler, pairing well with new head coach (and former Patriot) Mike Vrabel. Tennessee did let plenty of nana players walk, most notably running back DeMarco Murray and wide receiver Eric Decker, but that doesn’t seem to be a major concern for fans about the future, considering both players’ production has dropped off in recent seasons.

Indianapolis Colts

2017 Record: 4-12

The Colts are hoping they will finally have their quarterback. After season of “will he, won’t he,” quarterback Andrew Luck finally appears to be ready to hit the field, and he’ll have a brand new coaching staff and revamped roster to do so with.

After hiring Super Bowl champion offensive coordinator Frank Reich as their new head coach, the Colts underwent something of a transformation in the 2018 offseason, reverting back to the 4-3 defensive scheme and bringing in players to fit that. First priority, however, was protecting Luck, bringing in offensive linemen Quenton Nelson (1st-round draft pick), Austin Howard (Raiders) and Matt Slauson (LAC). On the defensive side, the Colts also signed former Raiders standout Denico Autry, and drafted plenty of young defensive talent.

Houston Texans

2017 Record: 4-12

A mid-season knee injury to quarterback Deshaun Watson left the Texans to struggle in the AFC South, but that wouldn’t stop the team from reloading around him in the offseason.

Houston brought in plenty of talent on both sides of the ball in 2018, most notably the “honey badger,” safety Tyrann Mathieu, and defensive backs Johnson Bademosi and Aaron Colvin, helping shore up the team’s defensive pass attack. Watson looks to return in 2018 at full strength, and will return the majority of his offensive receiving core and offensive line in the process.

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 21-25

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 21-25.

#21: Cincinnati Bengals

CBS Sports: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame | Bleacher Report: James Daniels, OL, Iowa | NFL.com: Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina

“The Bengals took a step toward addressing their offensive line woes by acquiring left tackle Cordy Glenn from the Bills and moving down to this pick. They should keep adding talent to the position with McGlinchey, who is a fit at either tackle spot. He’ll slot in at right tackle initially but could move to the left side if Glenn can’t stay healthy. Either way, drafting the Notre Dame standout puts the Bengals halfway to fixing their line issues.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#22: Buffalo Bills

CBS Sports: Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU | Bleacher Report (traded to Indianapolis Colts): Derrius Guice, RB, LSU | NFL.com: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida

“As part of the predicted trade for pick No. 6 overall, the Indianapolis Colts add this selection and get the workhorse running back they can plug in right behind Andrew Luck in Week 1.One of my philosophies is that a good running back makes the quarterback’s life easier, and that’s exactly what the physical, punishing, mean Guice would be as Luck gets back onto the field this season. The best way to take pressure off Luck is to give him a bell-cow back.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#23: Los Angeles Rams

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama | Bleacher Report: Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State

“The trade of Alec Ogletree to the Giants opens a spot for this gifted LB. Like so many of recent vintage from ‘Bama, Evans runs well, and is well-versed in pro-style scheme, and reasoning. Plus, he makes an impact as soon as he arrives.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#24: Carolina Panthers

CBS Sports: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama | Bleacher Report, NFL.com: Jaire Alexander, DB, Louisville

“The first order of business for returning general manager Marty Hurney in this draft should be fixing the mess his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, left at cornerback. Even considering how badly the team needs upgrades on the offensive line and at wide receiver, the secondary should get a look first.Louisville’s Jaire Alexander might not fit the size profile for some teams at 5’10 ¼” and 196 pounds, and he was banged up in 2017 with hand and leg injuries, but he’s a physical player at the line of scrimmage and in coverage. Alexander can match up with taller receivers thanks to his speed and instincts. His tool set would make him the Panthers’ best cornerback right away.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#25: Tennessee Titans

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Harold Landry, LB, Boston College | Bleacher Report: Sam Hubbard, EDGE, Ohio State

“Landry is an athletic freak as an edge rusher, but he’ll likely be better served not playing a large role as a rookie while he adjusts to the NFL and potentially bulks up. That should be just fine for the Titans, who will have a huge need at edge rusher next offseason with Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan slated to reach free agency. Landry can be a subpackage player in Year 1 and eventually take over one of those starting spots in 2019.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

Road to Super Bowl 52: Wild Card Weekend

The Road to Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis is officially here! Taking a quick look at all the games slated to kick off the 2017-18 NFL Playoffs throughout Wild Card Weekend.

Tennessee Titans @ Kansas City Chiefs (Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET on ESPN)

Quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans (9-7), just one game short of an AFC South title and coming off a win-and-in victory in Week 17, will travel to Kansas City to take on the AFC West champion Chiefs (10-6) to kick off NFL Wild Card weekend.

After a strong start to the 2017 NFL season had Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith in the early NFL MVP conversation, the Chiefs seemed to cool down in the second half of the season, losing 6 of 7 games in the middle of the season after winning their first five, and ending on a four-game win streak, to finish the year with 10 wins. The Titans, on the other hand, struggled with injuries early on, most notably with Mariota and a nagging hamstring injury.

Atlanta Falcons @ Los Angeles Rams (Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET on NBC)

After a collapse in Super Bowl 51 in Houston, the Atlanta Falcons (10-6) seemingly struggled to overcome that “Super Bowl hangover” in 2017. Touting one of the highest-flying offenses in 2016, the Falcons ranked just 14th in points per game (22.1), and quarterback Matt Ryan cooled off after his MVP campaign in 2016, throwing just 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 65.7 percent of his passes.

The Los Angeles Rams (11-5) are the opposite. After an uninspiring campaign in 2016, the team brought in Sean McVay to be the new head coach, and the team was an offensive firestorm, leading the league in points per game (29.9), thanks large in part to a stellar season from running back Todd Gurley II, who finished the season with 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Buffalo Bills @ Jacksonville Jaguars (Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET on CBS)

Perhaps the most surprising Wild Card matchup of the playoffs kicks off our Sunday action, as the Buffalo Bills (9-7) travel to take on the AFC South champion Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6).

Boasting the second-ranked defense in the league, the Jaguars held their opponents to just 15.5 points per game in 2017, second only to the Minnesota Vikings’ 14.8. The Jaguars also relied heavily on the legs of running back Leonard Fournette, as the team finished at the top of the league in rushing yards per game (141.4) and second in rushing touchdowns (18).

The Buffalo Bills seemingly snuck their way into the playoffs, thanks to a game-winning touchdown in Week 17 from the Cincinnati Bengals, defeating the Baltimore Ravens. When you look at the statistics, the Bills seem to have no business being in the playoffs, ranking second-to-last in passing yards per game (176.6), 27th in passing touchdowns (16) and 29th in sacks (27). However, the team ranked 6th overall in rushing yards per game (126.1), thanks large in part to running back LeSean McCoy.

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints (Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET on FOX)

One of the more highly anticipated matchups in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs is the Carolina Panthers (11-5) traveling to New Orleans to take on the NFC South champion Saints (11-5). These teams will face off for the third time this season (second in New Orleans) as both are members of the NFC South, which has a staggering three of its four teams in the playoffs.

Despite struggles early in the season, the Panthers offense returned to form, ranking 4th in rushing yards per game (131.4) and 7th in rushing touchdowns (15), thanks to a committee of quarterback Cam Newton and running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jonathan Stewart. The defense was also nothing to balk at, ranking near the top of the league in getting after the opponent’s quarterbacks (3rd – 50 sacks in 2017).

The Saints, whom plenty were ready to write off at the beginning of the season, were one of the best teams in the NFL in 2017. The offense, ranked near the top of the league in every statistical category, was a powerhouse, averaging 28 points per game (4th), 261.8 passing yards per game (5th), and had 23 rushing touchdowns on the season (1st). The defense, however, was the game changer for the Saints, thanks large-in-part to a stellar campaign from defensive end Cameron Jordan, who finished the season with 13 sacks, 48 tackles and two forced fumbles.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: vs. Tennessee Titans

Fresh off their bye week and looking to start anew on the 2017 NFL season, the Indianapolis Colts were once again at home in Week 12, facing the division-rival Tennessee Titans.

— Déjà Vu —

For the 9th time in the team’s 12 games this season, a halftime lead turned into a late-game loss for the Colts, as they would squander a 16-6 lead late in the 4th quarter, resulting in a 20-16 victory for the Tennessee Titans.

A late-game fumble by Marlon Mack in their own territory ultimately doomed the Colts, who before had not only the score on their side, but momentum as well, forcing two interceptions and giving the offense every opportunity to put the game away. Mack’s fumble would give the Titans the ball at the four yard line, leading to a Titans touchdown just seconds later.

— Defense Showing Signs —

The lone bright spot, week in and out, is seemingly the youthfulness and potential on the defensive side of the ball for the Colts.

Despite not managing to get to the quarterback for the entirety of the game, the young Colts defense forced two bad decisions by Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota due to pressure, leading to an interception for two of the season’s biggest stars for Indy, cornerbacks Nate Hairston and Rashaan Melvin.

— Looking Forward —

The Colts will hit the road in Week 13 to take on the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars, before making yet another trip in Week 14, this time to Buffalo to take on the Bills.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: @ Tennessee Titans

As the NFL endured another wild week in the 2017 season, the Indianapolis Colts traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the Titans on Monday Night Football in Week 6.

Second Half Struggles

Not a new development in this young Indianapolis Colts season, the team held a 19-9 lead early on, after an interception return for a touchdown by linebacker John Simon (see below). However, the Colts would be outscored 27-3 in the second half, 21 of which came in the 4th quarter, eventually losing the game by a score of 36-22, with the final dagger coming on a late 70+ yard touchdown run from Titans running back Derrick Henry.

Second-half struggles from this team aren’t exactly a new development, but for a restless fan base, they’re a discouraging one. The Colts have been outscore 85-22 in the 4th quarter so far this season, just six weeks into the young season. The loss in Tennessee puts the Colts alone at the bottom of the AFC South at 2-4, with the Titans, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars tied for first at 3-3.

Defensive Highlights

It wasn’t all bad for the Colts on Monday night. Linebacker John Simon, an offseason signing by new general manager Chris Ballard, is appearing to be a solid piece in this young, developing defense.

Simon’s pick-six on Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was an impressive feat, snagging the bullet right at the line of scrimmage and returning it for the Colts’ first defense touchdown of the game, giving the team a 10-point lead.

Looking Forward

The Colts (2-4) return home in Week 7, facing another vital divisional matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-3) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Indianapolis Colts Season Preview: Weeks 9-12

As teams take their preparations for the 2017 NFL season behind the scenes for the months of June and July, we’re taking a look at the matchups from the upcoming 2017 season for the Indianapolis Colts. Up next: weeks 9-12.

Week 9: Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans – Nov 5, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)

For the first time in the 2017 season, the Indianapolis Colts will square off agains the Houston Texans in a game of two divisional rivals set to battle for the divisional crown. The Texans, having undergone drastic changes in the 2017 offseason such as trading $72 million starting quarterback Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns, drafter college football national champion quarterback Deshaun Watson out of Clemson, and losing some key defensive starters. One of those starters; new Indianapolis Colts starting linebacker John Simon. This will be the first of two matchups for these two teams, with the second coming in Week 17.

Week 10: Pittsburgh Steelers @ Indianapolis Colts – Nov 12, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)

A rematch of the two teams’ showdown on Thanksgiving night in the 2016 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers will once again return to Indianapolis in Week 10. This time, however, the Colts are hoping quarterback Andrew Luck will face off against the Steelers. In 2016, Luck sat out the Thanksgiving game with a concussion, leaving quarterback Scott Tolzien to lead the offensive attack. The Steelers are returning their main offensive corps, as well as some new offensive weapons acquired through the draft, in a game that should test the legitimacy of the new Colts defensive front seven.

Week 11: Bye Week

A much needed week of rest happens to fall at (hopefully) a good time for the team, late in the season and allowing for a week to re-charge and set up for a playoff run.

Week 12: Tennessee Titans @ Indianapolis Colts – Nov. 26, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)

The second of two matchups, this time at home for the Indianapolis Colts. These divisional matchups in the AFC South look to be critical to each team’s playoff hopes.

Indianapolis Colts Season Preview: Weeks 5-8

While teams are quietly hard at work preparing for the 2017 NFL season, we’re taking a look at the full schedule, game-by-game, for the Indianapolis Colts. Next up: weeks 5-8.

Week 5: San Francisco 49ers @ Indianapolis Colts – Oct. 8, 1 p.m. ET (FOX)

One of the most highly anticipated games for Indianapolis Colts fans this season will be their Week 5 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers; however, the excitement isn’t building around the game. Colts owner Jim Irsay announced that the team will unveil a statue on Saturday, October 7, the day before the matchup. At halftime of the team’s game against the 49ers, the Colts will hold a jersey retirement ceremony for the future Hall of Fame quarterback, a special weekend fans truly won’t want to miss.

Week 6: Indianapolis Colts @ Tennessee Titans– Oct. 16 (Monday), 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

With plenty of new offensive weapons and a much more experienced team, the Tennessee Titans, after a 9-7 campaign in 2016 that saw them narrowly finishing 2nd in the AFC South to the Houston Texans, will play host to the Colts in the team’s first (and only) Monday Night Football game of the year on ESPN. Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, coming off of a torn ACL in 2016, looks to continue to build off of impressive rookie and sophomore campaigns for the team. The Colts’ newly revamped defense will face an offensive attack that could truly test the durability of the core. This will be the first of two matchups for these two teams, with the second coming in Week 12.

Week 7: Jacksonville Jaguars @ Indianapolis Colts – Oct. 22, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)

Despite finishing 3-13 and dead last in the AFC South in the 2016-17 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are a team that always seems to cause problems for the Indianapolis Colts. With a new head coach in Doug Marrone and former coach Tom Coughlin returning as the team’s new executive vice president of football operations, the Jaguars are touting a new “culture” surrounding the team. This will be the first of two matchups for these two teams, with the second coming in Week 13.

Week 8: Indianapolis Colts @ Cincinnati Bengals – Oct. 29, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)

Always facing each other in the NFL’s preseason, this time the Colts and Cincinnati Bengals will square off in the regulars season at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, OH. Just a short drive down I-75, the Colts will hope to contain the offensive duo of Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton and wide receiver A.J. Green, two of the best in the game to date. Despite a shaky defense and a 6-9-1 record in 2016, the Bengals will prove to be one of the Colts’ tougher opponents of the 2017 season as both teams are looking to get back to the NFL playoffs.

Tickets for the 2017 Indianapolis Colts VIP Tailgates are officially available! With a new general manager and a re-shaped roster, the Colts look to start anew after their disappointing 2016 campaign. Get your 2017 Colts VIP Tailgate tickets today
