2019 NFL Draft: Winners & Losers

Every team got better after the 2019 NFL Draft—or at least, that’s what every general manager, head coach and owner believes. But what teams truly may have helped their chances on the quest for a Super Bowl?

Indianapolis Colts: A — Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN

“How about the job Chris Ballard has done as general manager of the Colts? He absolutely crushed the 2018 draft, finding stars and helping catapult Indy to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth after going 4-12 in 2017. This roster has a ton of young talent. Ballard also landed an extra second-rounder from the Jets in the Sam Darnold trade last year, and that pick ended up at the very top of Round 2 in 2019. That’s good team-building, and the Colts had some very specific needs to fill this weekend. How did Ballard do? I love this class from top to bottom.

Ballard moved out of Round 1, picking up an extra 2020 second-rounder in going from No. 26 to No. 46, which meant Indy had three second-round picks. And I really liked all four of Indy’s Day 2 picks. I was surprised that cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (No. 34) made it out of the first round, but only one corner went in the first 32 picks. He is a little raw, but I think he’ll start immediately. Wide receiver Parris Campbell (No. 59) is a burner, but he also caught 90 passes last season and improved every year. He’ll play some slot and also scorch corners out wide. Bobby Okereke (No. 89) was my fourth-ranked inside linebacker, and he could compete with Anthony Walker for that starting spot. Defensive end Ben Banogu(No. 49) is a really good fit in Matt Eberflus’ 4-3 scheme.

That’s all three needs filled on Day 2. There were also some intriguing additions on Day 3, particularly in safety Khari Willis (No. 109), who I ranked as my No. 50 overall prospect. He broke up 10 passes last season and will be an impact special-teams contributor. Safety Marvell Tell III (No. 144) is a good athlete with a 6-foot-2 frame. Javon Patterson (No. 246) made 39 college starts at guard but will likely move to center.

Ballard & Co. have done it again. This is my favorite draft class.”

Cincinnati Bengals: A- — Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN

“It’s tough to know what to think about the Bengals in 2019. While longtime coach Marvin Lewis is gone and Zac Taylor is now in charge, Mike Brown still runs things. That means the team is going to build through the draft and not worry much about free agency. In fact, Cincinnati didn’t make many notable moves, other than parting ways with Vontaze Burfict and re-signing its own guys. After a 6-10 finish last season, is this team better?

This is not a sexy class, but it’s solid throughout. Jonah Williams (No. 11) is a no-brainer immediate starter, either at guard or tackle. Germaine Pratt (No. 72) is a converted safety who will likely end up at outside linebacker in Cincy’s 4-3. The versatility makes it good value. I didn’t love Ryan Finley‘s tape as much as Todd McShay — he gave Finley a second-round grade — but Andy Daltonshouldn’t be locked in long term, so this is another option for Taylor if Dalton underwhelms. To get Finley at No. 104 is solid.

Drew Sample (No. 52) is a really good blocking tight end, but even he didn’t expect to go in the second round. That was high with more complete tight ends available. Renell Wren (No. 125) had an up-and-down career for the Sun Devils, but he impressed at the Senior Bowl and has some intriguing athletic traits. I’m intrigued by the Day 3 running backs with Trayveon Williams (No. 182) and Rodney Anderson (No. 211). Anderson is one of the most talented backs in the class, but he simply couldn’t stay on the field. Williams is going to help spell Joe Mixon in the receiving game. Jordan Brown (No. 223) is a good corner for the seventh round.

Williams and Sample are the only surefire early starters, but there’s some upside with Finley and the Day 3 running backs. This group will help Taylor navigate his first year on the job.”

Other Winners

Buffalo Bills — Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated

“Sometimes you play the board, sometimes the board plays you, and sometimes the board drops your way and you don’t have to do much of anything at all. While Ed Oliver wasn’t going to fit in every defense, he fits perfectly in Buffalo. The fact that versatile offensive lineman Cody Ford was available in the second was simply kismet. While drafting a receiver would have placed a cherry on top of the sundae, this is a draft good for both coach and quarterback.”

Denver Broncos — Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated

“We tend to over-praise when a team’s board aligns with its biggest needs, but I didn’t think there was a way John Elway could have played the first round better. Joe Flacco adores athletic tight ends who can get open in intermediate space, then he gets a quality starter in round two with Dalton Risner and Drew Lock, who has much less pressure than previous Elway draft picks.”

Kyler Murray — Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated

“There’s a good chance he knew about this, otherwise why make the leap with such assurance? Either way, Murray goes from a Double-A bus to nowhere, to assured 40-man roster, to No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. I don’t think there are many players who would continually challenge the draft industrial complex in two sports like Murray did and still come out ahead.”

Super Bowl 54 in Miami

2019 NFL Free Agency Preview

With the 2019 NFL Combine officially behind us, the next step on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami in 2020 is the beginning of the new league year, and the free agency season. What teams are positioned to be buyers and sellers, and what players might command the most attention as the new year begins on March 13th at 4:00 p.m. ET?

Top Teams

While many people generally see teams with open cap space and teams that struggled the previous season as one in the same, the Indianapolis Colts, after a surprising 11-5 season that saw the team make the divisional round of the playoffs, hold the most cap space with $105.8 million in free money.

While many peg the team to make a big splash acquisition like former Steelers teammates, running back Le’Veon Bell and/or wide receiver Antonio Brown, there are plenty of other players commanding far less attention/money that fit the team’s style nicely.

Other top teams with cap space: New York Jets ($99 million), Houston Texans ($83.3 million), Buffalo Bills ($77.3 million) and Cleveland Browns ($77.2 million)

Top Free Agents

Le’Veon Bell, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers — 2017*: 321 RUSH, 1,291 YDS, 9 TD | 85 REC, 655 YDS, 2 TD

One of the most talked about names in the free agency market for a handful of years now, former Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell, after holding out the entire 2018 season, is officially a free agent. Potential suitors for Bell have been mentioned as possibly being the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans, among others.

Trey Flowers, DE, New England Patriots — 2018: 57 TKL, 7.5 SACKS, 3 FF

The 25-year-old Super Bowl champion defensive pass rusher, coming off a career year in 2018, is due for one of the biggest paydays of the open market. With potential free agent defensive pass rushers like Jadeveon Clowney and Grady Jarrett being franchise tagged, the market thinned early, meaning don’t be surprised if Flowers brings in a massive deal with a new team.

Landon Collins, S, New York Giants — 2018: 96 TKL, 5 TFL, 1 FF

A 25-year-old three-time Pro Bowler, safety Landon Collins is the type of versatile defensive back that can completely re-shape a team’s secondary identity. Though he’s slightly struggled in the past few seasons (hampered by an injury in 2018), Collins was in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year conversation in 2016, and will be a big prize for some lucky team in free agency.

C.J. Mosley, LB, Baltimore Ravens — 2018: 105 TKL, 6 TFL, 0.5 SACK, 1 INT

After not receiving a franchise tag from the Ravens, four-time Pro Bowl selection C.J. Mosley is poised to hit the open market as one of the premier linebackers available. Granted, inside linebackers don’t sport the flash they used to, but three-down playmakers like Mosley pose a valuable threat to any defense looking to take their unit to the next level.

Earl Thomas, S, Seattle Seahawks — 2018**:22 TKL, 3 INT

Thomas can be considered as nothing less than one of the most prolific safeties of this generation of defense. His unique abilities have allowed the Seahawks to be very aggressive on defense, knowing that Thomas was deep in the secondary to clean up any mistakes over the top. Coming off a season-ending leg injury, and at 30 years old, Thomas is hard to count out and will be a soldi defensive addition to any secondary looking for veteran leadership.

Tevin Coleman, RB, Atlanta Falcons — 2018: 167 RUSH, 800 YDS, 4 TD | 32 REC, 276 YDS, 5 TD

One of the more interesting names on the thin running back market, Coleman has been a solid contributor out of the Falcons backfield, especially in 2018 with start Devonta Freeman missing most of the season. It’s unclear whether Coleman has the ability to be a team’s workhorse, three-down back, but will be a solid addition to any teams backfield and offensive showcase.

Nick Foles, QB, Philadelphia Eagles — 2018**: 72.3% COMP, 1,413 YDS, 7 TD, 4 INT

The most intriguing name to hit the market, Super Bowl LII MVP quarterback Nick Foles is finally free of Philadelphia and looking for a starting gig—reportedly heading to the Jacksonville Jaguars at the opening of free agency. Foles and Jacksonville are a perfect fit, as the Jaguars are looking to move on from Blake Bortles, and Foles is looking for a reliable starting gig and a team to lead.

*  — Missed 2018 season | ** — Didn’t play entire 2018 season

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXVIII

For the first time in NFL history, two teams were facing off in consecutive years, as the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills square off once again in 1994 on the Road to Super Bowl 53.

Buffalo Falls Short (x4)

As two teams met in consecutive years, the Super Bowl would also have consecutive results; the Dallas Cowboys coming out victorious over the Buffalo Bills as Super Bowl champions. The Cowboys would defeat the Bills, 30-13, in front of over 72,000 fans at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia.

Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith would take home Super Bowl MVP honors in 1994, carrying the ball for 132 yards and two touchdowns, while also recording four catches on the night.

Halftime entertainment for Super Bowl XXVIII was a big deal in 1994, as the Judds, Winona and Naomi, would perform. The game was broadcast on NBC to over 90 million football fans worldwide, with Dick Enberg and Bob Trumpy handling broadcasting duties. The cost of a 30-second commercial spot for the Super Bowl in 1994 was up to $900,000!

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXVII

A powerhouse in the 1990’s, the Buffalo Bills are squaring off in their third-straight Super Bowl appearance, facing the NFC-champion Dallas Cowboys on the Road to Super Bowl 53.

Buffalo Falls Short (…Again x2)

Playing in their third-straight Super Bowl would seemingly be a good feeling for Bills fans, however being losers of the last two, hope was fading. Still, when the team squared off with the Dallas Cowboys on January 31, 1993 in Super Bowl XXVII in Pasadena, California, over 98,000 fans strong would witness what they hoped was a Buffalo victory.

The Dallas Cowboys had other plans, however. Super Bowl XXVII would go on to be a history-making performance for the Cowboys, who would force a record nine turnovers throughout the game, four being interceptions and five forced fumbles. Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman would take home Super Bowl MVP honors, completing 22 of his 30 pass attempts for 273 yards and four touchdowns.

From this point forward, the Super Bowl halftime show would be all about getting that top performing artist to conduct the entertainment. In 1993, Michael Jackson would handle Super Bowl XXVII halftime duties, in one of the most memorable halftime performances even still to this day. Nearly 91 million viewers watched Super Bowl XXVII from the comfort of their own homes, and the cost of a 30-second spot was around $850,000!

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXVI

In 2018, the city of Minneapolis hosted Super Bowl 52, a Philadelphia Eagles victory over the New England Patriots. But in 1992, the city hosted their first-ever, as the Road to Super Bowl 53 features a showdown between the returning Buffalo Bills and the NFC-champion Washington Redskins.

Buffalo Falls Short (Again)

Played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Washington Redskins would defeat the two-time defending AFC champion Buffalo Bills by a score of 37-24, claiming their Lombardi trophy in Super Bowl XXVI.

After what was an incredible season for both teams in 1991-92, the Redskins would jump out to an impressive 24-0 lead early in Super Bowl XXVI. From that point forward, the Bills would have trouble gaining back that ground, eventually scoring 24 points of their own but losing by 13. Mark Rypien, quarterback for the Redskins, would capture Super Bowl MVP honors in 1992 with 292 yards and two touchdowns.

CBS was the exclusive home of Super Bowl XXVI for those watching at home, once gain having Pat Summerall and John Madden handle broadcasting duties, which tallied up to around 79.6 million viewers. The cost of a 30-second commercial spot jumped to $850,000, by far and large the most expensive to date.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXV

As the 2018 NFL season rolls on, two teams seemingly in disarray and looking to battle for draft position are the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills. But in 1991, the two iconic franchises squared off in Super Bowl XXV. The Road to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta takes us to Tampa, Florida (host of Super Bowl 55 in 2021).

“Wide Right”

Played at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida in 1991, Super Bowl XXV between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills was played in front of over 73,000 fans, and it did not disappoint. The Giants would walk away with the victory, a 20-19 win over the Bills.

The Giants would set a Super Bowl record in Super Bowl XXV with a time of possession clocking in at over 40 minutes, or 2/3 of the game. Running back Ottis Anderson would take home Super Bowl MVP honors, carrying the ball 21 times for 102 yards and a touchdown. Ottis was also the first recipient of the award after it was re-named the “Pete Rozell Trophy,” in honor of the former league commissioner.

The cost of a 30-second commercial spot for Super Bowl XXV was up over the $800,000 mark! A total of 79.51 million viewers tuned into ABC to catch the Super Bowl in 1991, with Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf handling broadcasting duties. The National Anthem was famously performed by Whitney Houston, and New Kids on the Block handled the halftime entertainment.

Road to Super Bowl 53: AFC East Preview

Previewing every division in the NFL ahead of the ‘Road to Super Bowl 53’ in Atlanta, Georgia. Next up; the AFC East.

New England Patriots

2017 Record: 13-3, AFC Champions

Not surprisingly, the New England Patriots were the AFC East and AFC champions in 2017, coming up short to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

An offseason of change is sweeping over New England, amidst rumors of tension, trades and retirements. Wide receivers Brandin Cooks (traded to Los Angeles Rams) and Danny Amendola (signed with Miami Dolphins), as well as running back Dion Lewis (signed with Tennessee Titans) are gone, leaving quarterback Tom Brady with plenty of new faces on offense. Alongside first round draft pick running back Sony Michel out of the University of Georgia,  wide receiver Jordan Matthews and running backs Jeremy Hill and Rex Burkhead will look to be a featured faces on the offense.

Buffalo Bills

2017 Record: 9-7

A team that finished ahead of their expectations in 2017, the Buffalo Bills themselves featured an offseason of change. The team traded quarterback Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns, instead opting to draft the young-and-talented quarterback Josh Allen out of Wyoming.

On the defensive side of the ball, a relatively stingy defense got even better with the addition of players like defensive back Vontae Davis and defensive tackle Star Lotulelei.

Miami Dolphins

2017 Record: 6-10

After a disappointing 2017 campaign that say quarterback Ryan Tannehill sitting out due to injury, a temporary solution in former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and the mid-season trade of running back Jay Ajayi to the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, the Dolphins are looking to start over in 2018.

The Dolphins have been active on both the trade and free agency markets in the 2018 offseason, most notably trading for former Rams defensive end Robert Quinn, former Lions linebacker Akeem Spence, and signing the likes of wide receiver Danny Amendola away from the division-rival Patriots, hoping to give their defense the talent it lacks while giving a hopefully-healthy Tannehill some offensive weapons.

New York Jets

2017 Record: 5-11

Despite a 5-11 campaign in the 2017 NFL season, the New York Jets were actually one of the surprises, finishing with more wins than many expected. That didn’t stop the team, however, from undergoing a complete makeover in the offseason.

The Jets not only signed quarterback Josh McCown to a one-year extension, the team also opted to draft former USC quarterback Sam Darnold and sign former Minnesota Viking Teddy Bridgewater. Aside from the QB position, the Jets brought in plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, re-signing wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, bringing in former Redskins and Browns WR Terrelle Pryor, former Browns running back Isaiah Crowell, and plenty of other key positional players.

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 21-25

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 21-25.

#21: Cincinnati Bengals

CBS Sports: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame | Bleacher Report: James Daniels, OL, Iowa | NFL.com: Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina

“The Bengals took a step toward addressing their offensive line woes by acquiring left tackle Cordy Glenn from the Bills and moving down to this pick. They should keep adding talent to the position with McGlinchey, who is a fit at either tackle spot. He’ll slot in at right tackle initially but could move to the left side if Glenn can’t stay healthy. Either way, drafting the Notre Dame standout puts the Bengals halfway to fixing their line issues.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#22: Buffalo Bills

CBS Sports: Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU | Bleacher Report (traded to Indianapolis Colts): Derrius Guice, RB, LSU | NFL.com: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida

“As part of the predicted trade for pick No. 6 overall, the Indianapolis Colts add this selection and get the workhorse running back they can plug in right behind Andrew Luck in Week 1.One of my philosophies is that a good running back makes the quarterback’s life easier, and that’s exactly what the physical, punishing, mean Guice would be as Luck gets back onto the field this season. The best way to take pressure off Luck is to give him a bell-cow back.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#23: Los Angeles Rams

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama | Bleacher Report: Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State

“The trade of Alec Ogletree to the Giants opens a spot for this gifted LB. Like so many of recent vintage from ‘Bama, Evans runs well, and is well-versed in pro-style scheme, and reasoning. Plus, he makes an impact as soon as he arrives.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#24: Carolina Panthers

CBS Sports: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama | Bleacher Report, NFL.com: Jaire Alexander, DB, Louisville

“The first order of business for returning general manager Marty Hurney in this draft should be fixing the mess his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, left at cornerback. Even considering how badly the team needs upgrades on the offensive line and at wide receiver, the secondary should get a look first.Louisville’s Jaire Alexander might not fit the size profile for some teams at 5’10 ¼” and 196 pounds, and he was banged up in 2017 with hand and leg injuries, but he’s a physical player at the line of scrimmage and in coverage. Alexander can match up with taller receivers thanks to his speed and instincts. His tool set would make him the Panthers’ best cornerback right away.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#25: Tennessee Titans

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Harold Landry, LB, Boston College | Bleacher Report: Sam Hubbard, EDGE, Ohio State

“Landry is an athletic freak as an edge rusher, but he’ll likely be better served not playing a large role as a rookie while he adjusts to the NFL and potentially bulks up. That should be just fine for the Titans, who will have a huge need at edge rusher next offseason with Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan slated to reach free agency. Landry can be a subpackage player in Year 1 and eventually take over one of those starting spots in 2019.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 11-15

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 11-15.

#11: Miami Dolphins

CBS Sports, Bleacher Report: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia | NFL.com: Vita Vea, DT, Washington

“The Dolphins have been showing interest in Smith, one of the draft’s top linebackers. He’d be the long-term stud the team needs next to Raekwon McMillan, and the Dolphins could make him the immediate starter at WILL and look to trade Kiko Alonso to another team where he’d be a better fit. They can also think about getting out from Alonso’s deal next offseason if nothing else.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#12: Buffalo Bills

CBS Sports (traded to Cleveland Browns): Vita Vea, DT, Washington | Bleacher Report (traded to Indianapolis Colts): Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA | NFL.com: Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming

“After trading back, again, the Indianapolis Colts will gain pick Nos. 12, 22 and 96 in this hypothetical deal with the Buffalo Bills in exchange for the No. 6 spot.At No. 12, Ballard and Co. still get a top-notch player who fills a huge need. Marcus Davenport is raw, coming from tiny Texas-San Antonio. But he showed during the season, at the Senior Bowl and the combine that he’s the type of athletic rarity who can make the needed improvements to make an early NFL impact.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#13: Washington Redskins

CBS Sports: Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia | Bleacher Report: Vita Vea, DT, Washington | NFL.com: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia

“Nothing wrong with more speed being added on defense, and Smith fits the bill. He’s often favorably compared to Atlanta MLB Deion Jones due to his build, and ability to play FAST.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#14: Green Bay Packers

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA | Bleacher Report: Josh Jackson, DB, Iowa

“An offseason of change has the Green Bay Packers looking like a new team heading into the draft. But that new team still has holes to fill at pass-rusher, wide receiver and cornerback.Iowa’s Josh Jackson didn’t help his cause with a 4.56-second 40-yard-dash at the combine, but his play shows a cornerback with ball skills, technique and toughness. He’s a natural fit in defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s scheme, and he and Kevin King give them one heck of a young cornerback duo.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#15: Arizona Cardinals

CBS Sports: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville | Bleacher Report: Mike Hughes, DB, UCF | NFL.com: Connor Williams, G, Texas

“Jackson isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the Cardinalshave an offensive coordinator in Mike McCoy who can build the offense to the dynamic prospect’s strengths. Jackson isn’t ever going to be the best passer in the league, but good luck defending a running game that features David Johnson and the threat of the QB running at any time. The Cardinals would ideally trade up for one of the top four QBs, but with so many holes on the roster, they can’t afford to sacrifice picks.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

Road to Super Bowl 52: Wild Card Weekend

The Road to Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis is officially here! Taking a quick look at all the games slated to kick off the 2017-18 NFL Playoffs throughout Wild Card Weekend.

Tennessee Titans @ Kansas City Chiefs (Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET on ESPN)

Quarterback Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans (9-7), just one game short of an AFC South title and coming off a win-and-in victory in Week 17, will travel to Kansas City to take on the AFC West champion Chiefs (10-6) to kick off NFL Wild Card weekend.

After a strong start to the 2017 NFL season had Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith in the early NFL MVP conversation, the Chiefs seemed to cool down in the second half of the season, losing 6 of 7 games in the middle of the season after winning their first five, and ending on a four-game win streak, to finish the year with 10 wins. The Titans, on the other hand, struggled with injuries early on, most notably with Mariota and a nagging hamstring injury.

Atlanta Falcons @ Los Angeles Rams (Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET on NBC)

After a collapse in Super Bowl 51 in Houston, the Atlanta Falcons (10-6) seemingly struggled to overcome that “Super Bowl hangover” in 2017. Touting one of the highest-flying offenses in 2016, the Falcons ranked just 14th in points per game (22.1), and quarterback Matt Ryan cooled off after his MVP campaign in 2016, throwing just 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, completing 65.7 percent of his passes.

The Los Angeles Rams (11-5) are the opposite. After an uninspiring campaign in 2016, the team brought in Sean McVay to be the new head coach, and the team was an offensive firestorm, leading the league in points per game (29.9), thanks large in part to a stellar season from running back Todd Gurley II, who finished the season with 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Buffalo Bills @ Jacksonville Jaguars (Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET on CBS)

Perhaps the most surprising Wild Card matchup of the playoffs kicks off our Sunday action, as the Buffalo Bills (9-7) travel to take on the AFC South champion Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6).

Boasting the second-ranked defense in the league, the Jaguars held their opponents to just 15.5 points per game in 2017, second only to the Minnesota Vikings’ 14.8. The Jaguars also relied heavily on the legs of running back Leonard Fournette, as the team finished at the top of the league in rushing yards per game (141.4) and second in rushing touchdowns (18).

The Buffalo Bills seemingly snuck their way into the playoffs, thanks to a game-winning touchdown in Week 17 from the Cincinnati Bengals, defeating the Baltimore Ravens. When you look at the statistics, the Bills seem to have no business being in the playoffs, ranking second-to-last in passing yards per game (176.6), 27th in passing touchdowns (16) and 29th in sacks (27). However, the team ranked 6th overall in rushing yards per game (126.1), thanks large in part to running back LeSean McCoy.

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints (Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET on FOX)

One of the more highly anticipated matchups in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs is the Carolina Panthers (11-5) traveling to New Orleans to take on the NFC South champion Saints (11-5). These teams will face off for the third time this season (second in New Orleans) as both are members of the NFC South, which has a staggering three of its four teams in the playoffs.

Despite struggles early in the season, the Panthers offense returned to form, ranking 4th in rushing yards per game (131.4) and 7th in rushing touchdowns (15), thanks to a committee of quarterback Cam Newton and running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jonathan Stewart. The defense was also nothing to balk at, ranking near the top of the league in getting after the opponent’s quarterbacks (3rd – 50 sacks in 2017).

The Saints, whom plenty were ready to write off at the beginning of the season, were one of the best teams in the NFL in 2017. The offense, ranked near the top of the league in every statistical category, was a powerhouse, averaging 28 points per game (4th), 261.8 passing yards per game (5th), and had 23 rushing touchdowns on the season (1st).
