Indianapolis Colts Week 8: Falling Apart

On Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts fell apart. Facing the Kansas City Chiefs at home, quarterback Andrew Luck and company struggled to contain a second-string Chiefs unit, losing the game 30-14.

Luck Struggles

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck stated after the game that he was the first person to blame for Sunday’s excruciating loss to the Chiefs. Luck finished the game with 210 yards and two touchdowns, but also turned the ball over twice, once on a fumbled snap and the other on a bad interception at the end of the first half.

Injuries, Injuries, Injuries

The Colts suffered another round of potentially-devastating injuries once again in Sunday’s game against the Chiefs.

All-pro cornerback Vontae Davis and offensive guard Joe Reitz both left the game with concussions, and will enter the league’s concussion protocol ahead of next Sunday’s trip to Green Bay.

Wide receiver T.Y. Hilton also left the game briefly with a hamstring injury in the second quarter, but would later return, albeit looking hobbled throughout the game.

Looking Ahead

The Colts will travel to Lambeau Field in Green Bay next Sunday, facing a Packers team that has a hot offense, fresh off a loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Indianapolis Colts Week 7: Divisional Victory

On Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts traveled to Nashville to take on the Tennessee Titans, just one-week following the meltdown in Houston. Sitting at 2-4 and needing a win to save the season, quarterback Andrew Luck and company finally delivered, from beginning to end, despite plenty of mistakes along the way.

Andrew Luck Shines

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was without many of his key weapons on Sunday. With wide receivers Donte Moncrief and now Phillip Dorsett out, alongside starting tight end Dwayne Allen, the Colts were left with many names fans had never heard. Aside from T.Y. Hilton and hometown favorite Jack Doyle, the Colts started Chester Rogers, Devin Street and Erik Swoope in place of those injured.

Despite all of this, Luck shined on Sunday, throwing for 353 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score to tight end Jack Doyle, who had a career day.

Again, the GOAT

Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri, currently the oldest player in the NFL, shattered another NFL record on Sunday in Nashville. Vinatieri lined up and knocked through a field goal to put the Colts up 20-13. This field goal, however, was different. Vinatieri hit his 43rd consecutive field goal without a miss, breaking former Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt’s record of 42 in a row.

Looking Ahead

The Colts will return home next Sunday to face a familiar foe in the Kansas City Chiefs, who come into the game at 4-2, riding a two-game winning streak. Indianapolis will need to capitalize on Sunday if the Colts want even a shot at taking the division from the Houston Texans.

Indianapolis Colts Week 6: Epic Collapse

The Indianapolis Colts held a 23-9 lead over the Houston Texans with a little more than seven minutes left in the game on Sunday night. And if you’re a Colts fan that decided to go to bed after Andrew Luck’s touchdown run and Adam Vinatieri’s field goals that put the team up by 14, you were in for a surprise when you woke up on Monday morning.

coltsupdatetwitter

The Collapse

After a dominant first three quarters for the Colts, head coach Chuck Pagano and company squandered a 14-point lead with two quick drives from quarterback Brock Osweiler and the Houston Texans. Tied at 23-23 with 49 seconds and two timeouts left, the Colts had an opportunity to drive the field and position future hall of famer Adam Vinatieri for a potential game-winning field goal.

They didn’t. They went to overtime. The rest is history.

Two of the GOATs

For the first time since Vick Ballard in Week 15 of the 2012 season (ironically a loss to the Houston Texans), the Indianapolis Colts snapped a 61-game streak in which they failed to produce a 100-yard rusher.

Frank Gore finished the day with 106 yards on the ground, garnering a *small* amount of celebration before the ultimate defeat.

https://twitter.com/Schultz975/status/787864183417085952

Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri also completed a feat of his own, connecting on three field goals to pull into second place all-time for most consecutive field goals made. Vinatieri has now hit 41 in a row, just one shy of former Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt’s record of 42 straight.

What Now?

The Colts, who now sit alone in the basement of the AFC South at 2-4, will travel to Tennessee to face a Titans team that has won two in a row, and looked somewhat impressive in doing so. The Colts must win the game in order to not only breathe some life into the fan base, but also to resuscitate their divisional and playoff hopes.

Indianapolis Colts Week 5: On the Right Track?

The Indianapolis Colts entered Week 5 of the NFL’s regular season sitting at 1-3, fresh off a disappointing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Hosting the Chicago Bears, who also sport a 1-3 record, the Colts would look to secure a victory at home while easing the minds of their fan base. They (somewhat) did not disappoint.

Luck Shines (Again)

Yet again, the Indianapolis Colts’ flaws were masked by a brilliant performance by quarterback Andrew Luck on Sunday. Luck threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead touchdown to wide receiver T.Y. Hilton.

The defense is still bad

Despite the efforts of the offense, the Colts defense was just one forced fumble away from possibly allowing a game-winning drive to the Chicago Bears. Sporting backups at quarterback, running back and several key receiving positions, the Bears offense was able to rack up over 500 yards of offense and 23 points on the Colts defense.

“Special” Teams

The Colts have one of, if not the greatest kicking duos in kicker Adam Vinatieri and punter Pat McAfee. That was still the case on Sunday, as Vinatieri hit a slew of field goals, officially making 68 of his last 71 attempts, and McAfee booted a career-best 74-yard punt.

Looking Forward

The Colts will head to Houston in Week 6, facing the Texans on Sunday Night Football in the same stadium that will host Super Bowl LI. If the Colts want any hope of returning to Houston in February, this is a must-win for the team. With the Texans’ struggles in recent weeks, the chance to make noise in the AFC South is now for the Indianapolis Colts.

Indianapolis Colts Week 4: London (Colts) Are Falling Down

The Indianapolis Colts were participants in the NFL’s first International Series game of the season, as the team took on the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London. After falling to the Jags 30-27, the Colts now head back for the United States with a 1-3 record.

coltsupdatetwitter

Luck, No Luck

The Colts are doing quarterback Andrew Luck no favors. Luck has showed fans that his offseason work on sliding, protecting himself and making smarter decisions with the football was worth the scrutiny. The team around him, however, is upending the QB’s great start to 2016.

Luck is taking a league-high number of hits in the pocket, has the least amount of time to throw, and on Sunday against Jacksonville, saw multiple footballs dropped. It was apparent early in the game that it would be a frustrating campaign, as Luck had passes dropped by Dwayne Allen multiple times, Josh Ferguson, Chester Rogers and Phillip Dorsett.

Zero Focus

Luck admitted that he and the team were “not focused” on Sunday’s matchup in London, which leads fans to wonder if the International Series served as more of a distraction that originally believed. After the game, Luck was candid in his frustrations with the media, telling reporters “I’m tired of ‘almost,’ I want to win.”

Looking Forward

The Colts head back to the States to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. A matchup that previously seemed to favor the Colts, Bears backup QB Brian Hoyer looked good in leading his team to a victory on Sunday over the Detroit Lions, a team the Colts fell to in week 1.

Indianapolis Colts Week 3: A Sigh of Relief

In week 3 of the NFL’s regular season, teams begin to see some separation between the contenders and the pretenders. For the Indianapolis Colts, if they want to set their sights on Super Bowl LI in Houston, it was a chance to get the season back on the right track after a third straight 0-2 start. Finally, Colts fans everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief.

coltsupdatetwitter

Luck Overcomes Turnovers

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck looked like the same-old Andrew Luck for three and a half quarters of Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers. Luck got blasted by the Chargers defensive line, fumbling what would become a Chargers touchdown. Later in the game, Luck would follow his #1 option with his eyes and throw an interception that would lead to the Chargers taking the lead.

But down 22-20, Luck stepped up into the pocket and threaded the needle to wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, who was crossing the field. And the rest was left to Hilton.

That would give the Colts what would be the team’s game-winning touchdown, on a day where Hilton hauled in eight catches for 174 yards and that game-winning touchdown.

Defense Steps Up

The Colts received a wonderful gift heading into Sunday’s game against San Diego, getting defensive starters Clayton Geathers, Vontae Davis and Henry Anderson back from injury. These returns proved to be a game changer, as the Colts defense seemed to hold off a potent Chargers offense, led by quarterback Phillip Rivers.

The Chargers would be held to just one offensive touchdown, on a run by running back Melvin Gordon. Indianapolis held the Chargers to just 37 total rushing yards, and Rivers, though passing for 330 yards, would not throw a single touchdown pass.

As the Chargers got the ball with 1:17 left, down 22-26, Rivers completed a pass to rookie tight end Hunter Henry, who would take it for a first down as Colts safety Clayton Geathers punched the ball out, recovered by safety Mike Adams.

Looking Forward

After notching their first win of the season, the Colts are heading overseas! Indianapolis takes their first trip to London for the NFL’s International Series against divisional rival Jacksonville Jaguars. Nearly 250 Colts fans from Indianapolis will be traveling with Bullseye for Sunday’s game at London’s Wembley Stadium, where the Colts will be looking to pull their record to an even .500. A special kickoff time in the United States, as the teams take the field in London at 9:30 am ET!

Indianapolis Colts Week 2: Same Story, Different Year

The Indianapolis Colts had a chance to show the league they were a reinvigorated team heading into week 2 against the Denver Broncos. Following even more injuries (yes, that’s possible) to the defensive secondary, the team squandered their opportunities against the defending Super Bowl champions.

coltsupdatetwitter

Andrew Luck’s Regression

Despite an outstanding game in week 1, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck seemed to regress back to the early 2015 version of himself as he struggled from beginning to end. After totaling just over 70 yards of passing in the first half, Luck was intercepted in the 4th quarter by Aqib Talib, who returned the pick over 40 yards to put the Broncos up 23-13.

After rebounding and throwing a touchdown to Frank Gore, it seemed the Colts were going to rally. After forcing the Broncos to only a field goal, the Colts would have the ball with nearly two minutes left, down by six and in position to drive for a game-winning touchdown.

Then, Von Miller happened.

The Super Bowl 50 MVP embarrassed Colts right tackle Joe Reitz and stripped Andrew Luck of the ball, which would be recovered for another defensive touchdown, putting Denver up 34-20 (after a completed two point conversion).

Just one week after believing Luck had become a more patient and efficient passer throughout the offseason, Colts fans are now left to wonder; was week 1 a fluke? Or is the Denver Broncos defense just that good?

No Rest for the Injured

Coming into the week 2 matchup, the Colts would be without starting cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Patrick Robinson, as well as safety T.J. Green.

Then CB Antonio Cromartie got hurt. Then CB Darius Butler, who made his return Sunday from a foot injury in preseason. Then safety Clayton Geathers had to be helped off. Then Cromartie again. You get the point.

It’s hard to believe there’s been a team that has suffered as many catastrophic injuries on the defensive side of the ball as the Colts have. And with gunslinger Phillip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers rolling into Indianapolis on Sunday, Colts fans are hoping to see some relief.

Indianapolis Colts Week 1: Heartbreak

The NFL as officially kicked off the Road to Super Bowl LI, with week 1 in the books. Here is a look back at week 1 in Indianapolis.

Colts VIP Tailgate

With the beginning of the new football year, comes new opportunities for tailgating! The 2016 Colts VIP Tailgates promised to be better than ever, and Week 1 did not disappoint.

Heartbreaking Loss

The Colts suffered a 39-35 defeat at the hand of the Detroit Lions on Sunday, in a game that saw yet another slow start for the offense. The Lions jumped out to a quick 21-3 lead, before a late first half drive that would send the teams into halftime at 21-10.

Quarterback Andrew Luck, who would lead the team on a 35-13 run that would give the team a 35-34 lead with 37 seconds left in the game, voiced his frustrations with the slow starts after the game.

“I’m tired of talking about slow starts, I’m tired of being a part of the slow starts, and I’m disappointed in myself for being a part of the slow starts,” Luck said to reporters following the game. Luck finished the game with 385 yards and four touchdowns.

Positives

The positives are that the offensive line looked much improved, the Colts didn’t turn over the ball and Andrew Luck looked sharp. The defense, although atrocious in the game, is marred by injuries in a game that made the situations even worse, seeing injuries to defensive backs Patrick Robinson and T.J. Green.

Road to Super Bowl LI: Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are looking for drastic improvement following their 2015 campaign, which saw an 8-8 record and missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 season. Here is what the road to Super Bowl LI in Houston looks like for the horseshoe.

road-to-sbli-indianapolis-colts

Toughest Stretch

The Colts face their toughest test of the season, beginning in week 5 and leading up to their week 10 bye.

After returning from a week 4 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, the Colts will face not only the obstacle of overseas travel, but also a short week as a result of that travel, in preparing for a week 5 matchup against the Chicago Bears at home. After just a week at home, the Colts will then go on the road to take on division rivals in the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans, return home to face the Kansas City Chiefs, then travel to Lambeau Field to play the Green Bay Packers. All before their week 11 bye.

This five-to-six week stretch of time is when Colts fans are going to find out what the team is made of, battling not only potential-playoff contenders, but also travel, time and fatigue.

Par for the Course

The Colts face the AFC West and NFC North divisions in the 2016 regular season, giving them many noteworthy potential playoff-contending opponents.

However, with a redesigned coaching staff and an invigorated Andrew Luck, it’s hard seeing Indianapolis sinking below the 11-5 threshold the team was able to achieve in all of Luck and head coach Chuck Pagano’s first three years, before the 8-8 meltdown with the quarterback.

Whether or not the offensive line has been heavily redesigned enough by general manager Ryan Grigson, however, will change these predictions and expectations.

He’s Back: Andrew Luck in Action

In Saturday’s preseason home opener against the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts fans got their glimpse at quarterback Andrew Luck’s first live game action since missing nine games in 2015. Here’s what they saw as the Colts set their sights on Super Bowl LI in Houston.

Copy of DivisionPreview

Perfect Passing

Luck would play the first two drives for the Colts, completing all eight of his passes and garnering 69 yards. Luck and the offense remained relatively conservative in their playcalling, with the majority of Luck’s passes being to  slot receivers in the flat or dumping off to his running back. There were, however, a few deeper passes to Donte Moncrief (T.Y. Hilton did not play as a precaution).

A Smarter Quarterback

The big thing Colts fans got to see out of Luck was a clearly smarter player. Though a small sample, Luck seemed to be more calm in the pocket, checking down to his running back when there were no options instead of trying to force a big play, which has plagued Luck’s interception numbers in the past.

Luck also showed his newly-trained ability to slide at the end of big runs. In the first quarter, Luck ripped off two scrambles out of the pocket for first downs, both times sliding before taking a hit, much to the applause of the Lucas Oil Stadium crowd. If the Colts want any chance at a run to Super Bowl LI in Houston, Luck remaining healthy and minimizing hits will be top priority.
