Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XLIV

With Week 15 nearing, it appears the road to Super Bowl 54 in the NFC may run through New Orleans. The last time they held home field advantage? The 2009 NFL season, which resulted in a Super Bowl XLIV victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Saints Complete the Comeback

Super Bowl XLIV, played between the Saints and Colts, was played on February 7, 2010 in Miami, Florida at Sun Life Stadium. In front of nearly 75,000 fans, the Saints would go on to capture the Lombardi Trophy, by a final score of 31-17.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees took home Super Bowl XLIV MVP honors, completing 32 of his 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. Brees tied a record previously held by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, with 32 total completions in the big game. Brady set the record initially in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Super Bowl XLIV was aired on CBS in front of a total of 153.4 million viewers, with the cost of a 30-second commercial rising to a whopping $3 million. Commentators Jim Nantz and Phil Simms boradcasted Super Bowl XLIV, with legendary band “The Who” performing at halftime.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XLI

With the 2019-20 NFL Playoffs on the horizon, we’re getting closer and closer in our countdown to Super Bowl 54, with Super Bowl XLI between the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears.

Peyton Gets His 1st Ring

On February 4, 2007, the Colts and Bears kicked off a historic Super Bowl XLI from Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida. Super Bowl XLI would become the first Super Bowl in which not only was there an African American head coach leading one of the two teams, but both teams, and one would become the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl. The Indianapolis Colts and head coach Tony Dungy would take home the title, by a final score of 29-17.

Many remember Super Bowl XLI as the Super Bowl where Colts quarterback Peyton Manning finally got the “monkey off his back.” After years of early playoff exits and disappointing finishes, Manning and the Colts had finally captured their first Lombardi trophy. Manning would go on to be named Super Bowl XLI MVP, completing 25 of his 38 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown.

In front of 74,512 football fans at Dolphin Stadium, the late Prince would perform the Super Bowl halftime show, in a performance that would become iconic, and the national anthem was sung by Billy Joel. A total of 93.2 million fans tuned in to catch Super Bowl XLI, broadcast by Jim Nantz and Phil Simms on CBS. And the cost of a 30-second Super Bowl commercial spot would cost around $2.6 million.

Road to Super Bowl 53: Divisional Weekend

After Wild Card weekend, we officially have the NFL’s version of the “Elite Eight,” as we approach Divisional Weekend on the Road to Super Bowl 53. So who’s got the best chance to head to Atlanta next month for the big game?

A heartbreaker in Chicago after a missed game-winning field goal in the waning seconds has the defending Super Bowl champions breathing new life, as they’ll head to New Orleans to face the #1 seed Saints in the divisional round.

The Saints boasted the best record in the NFL in the 2018 season, and with their league-leading defense, will be the toughest test of the Eagles’ postseason run. The two teams faced each other in November, with the Saints beating the Eagles by a final score of 48-7.

After defending their home turf in the Wild Card round, the Dallas Cowboys will hit the road to face the #2 seed Los Angeles Rams and their potent offensive attack in the divisional round. Despite neither team meeting in the 2018 regular season, these two teams are quite familiar with one another, which will prove to be an intriguing matchup with Rams running back Todd Gurley looking to take on Dallas’ surprisingly staunch defense.

Saturday: Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams, 8:15 p.m. ET (FOX) | Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears, 4:40 p.m. ET (FOX)

Not something many predicted just a few short weeks back — but one could argue the two hottest teams in the AFC (and really, the entire NFL) right now are the Wild Card teams in the AFC in the 5-seed Los Angeles Chargers and the 6-seed Indianapolis Colts.

Winners of 10 of their last 11 games, the Indianapolis Colts are considered by many to be the hottest team in football, defeating the Houston Texans 21-7 on the road in the Wild Card round, setting up a matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs that sports the potential for fireworks on both offensive sides of the ball.

Between Colts quarterback Andrew Luck (39) and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (50), the two combined for 89 touchdown passes in the regular season, the most between two quarterbacks to face off in the postseason in NFL history. And with plenty of playmakers such as T.Y. Hilton, Tyreek Hill, and plenty of others, this Divisional showdown is arguably the marquee matchup of the weekend.

The second matchup on the AFC’s side is a matchup that seems all-too-familiar — the Los Angeles Chargers traveling to New England to face quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots.

It’s like a broken record — Brady and Belichick are having a down season, yet somehow still manage the #2 seed and a bye week. Brady has never lost to any of the remaining quarterbacks in the AFC’s playoff race, and Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will be looking to change that.

Saturday: Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs, 4:35 p.m. ET (NBC) | Sunday: Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots, 1:05 p.m. ET (CBS)

Road to Super Bowl 53: Wild Card Weekend

The stage is officially set — what began with 32 teams in September has come down to the final 12, with all eyes on Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for Super Bowl 53. A quick preview of the Wild Card weekend matchups as we kick off the 2018 NFL postseason!

All roads to Atlanta and Super Bowl 53 run through the New Orleans Saints in the NFC, with the Los Angeles Rams the other team sporting a Wild Card weekend bye.

The headlining matchups in the NFC this weekend feature the Dallas Cowboys hosting the Seattle Seahawks, and the NFC North champion Chicago Bears hosting the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Saturday: Seattle Seahawks at Dallas Cowboys, 8:15 p.m. ET (FOX) | Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears, 4:40 p.m. ET (NBC)

Up until the waning minutes of the 2018 regular season, the AFC’s playoff picture was still very much in flux. With the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots winning to secure their first-round byes, the Los Angeles Chargers were the only remaining team locked into their playoff spot ahead of a crucial Sunday night matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans.

Winners of 9 of their last 10 games (and the remaining wild card spot), the red hot Indianapolis Colts’ victory Sunday night cemented the matchups, heading back to Houston to take on the division-rival Texans in a rubber match, with the Baltimore Ravens hosting the Los Angeles Chargers.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Riding an emotional wave of a week following a victory in Week 9, the Indianapolis Colts returned home to take on the AFC-rival Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10 of the 2017 NFL season.

(Another) Second-Half Stumble

In a game that was looking to be one of the biggest surprises of Week 10, the Colts had jumped out to a 17-3 lead over the 6-2 Steelers, with quarterback Jacoby Brissett leading the attack. However, after a fluke interception that was deflected off of tight end Jack Doyle’s shoulder pad, the tide began to turn for the Colts.

After containing the aerial attack of the Steelers for most of the game, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and his all-pro receiving corps came alive in the second half, tossing a quick-strike touchdown to rookie standout JuJu Smith-Schuster before lobbing up the game-tying touchdown to tight end Vance McDonald late in the fourth.

Finally, with seconds to go, the Steelers would march down the field and give kicker Chris Boswell the game-winning attempt from 33-yards out, giving Pittsburgh the narrow victory, 20-17, and dropping the Colts to 3-7 on the year.

Glimmers of Improvement

It wasn’t all bad news for the Colts in Week 10. Despite missing a handful of their starting players on both sides of the ball, players like Donte Moncrief, Chester Rogers and Jabaal Sheard stood out for the team, proving that despite the record, this team is getting better when it comes to the fundamental aspects.

Looking Forward

The Colts get some much needed rest in Week 11 as the team will take their bye week. The team will return to action at home on Sunday, November 26 against the divison-rival Tennessee Titans.

2018 Super Bowl Countdown: Super Bowl V

As we continue to gear up for the start of the 2017 NFL season, we’re also hard at work preparing for Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis. Next up in our Countdown to Super Bowl LII, we’ve got the Baltimore Colts capturing their first Super Bowl trophy of the AFL-NFL merger era, facing off against “America’s Team.”

Super Bowl LII Minneapolis Countdown

January 17, 1971

Played once again in Miami, Florida at the Orange Bowl, Super Bowl V between the Baltimore Colts and Dallas Cowboys took place in front of over 79,000 fans. Though this wasn’t the largest crowd in Super Bowl history, it ranked up there and was an impressive crowd nonetheless.

The Baltimore Colts would come out of Super Bowl V with their first ever championship, defeating “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys, 16-13. One interesting fact about this particular Super Bowl is that this was the first to be played on artificial turf. Whether it be because of the teams or the turf, this game was dubbed the “Stupor Bowl,” where the Dallas Cowboys would go on to set a Super Bowl record for penalties with 10. The Colts would win this Super Bowl despite the fact they would lose legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas in the 2nd quarter due to injury.

Super Bowl V continues to live on as the only Super Bowl in which the MVP was awarded to a player on the losing team. Chuck Howley, linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, would go on to take Super Bowl MVP honors in his team’s losing efforts, intercepting two passes in the game. He was also the first player who was not a quarterback to win the award. It’s also rumored that Baltimore Colts defensive end Bubba Smith later said he would “not wear” his Super Bowl V ring because of the Colts’ “sloppy” play in the victory.

Indianapolis Colts Week 12: Nightmare Before Christmas

The Indianapolis Colts were hosting their first ever Thanksgiving game in Indianapolis in week 12, facing the Pittsburgh Steelers on short rest and without franchise quarterback Andrew Luck, who entered the league’s concussion protocol following the week 11 win against the Tennessee Titans. It’s a nightmarish Colts Weekly Update.

coltsupdatetwitter

No Luck, Lots of Problems

Without Luck, the Colts were ready to go with backup quarterback Scott Tolzien at the helm on Thursday night. Tolzien actually performed better than expected (albeit throwing two interceptions), tossing for 205 yards and a touchdown. It was the rest of the offense, however, that seemed to be a problem.

Drops plagued the Colts wide receiving corps on Thursday night, costing the team at least 14 points.

Injuries (Again)

While QB Andrew Luck and safety Clayton Geathers missed Thursday’s game due to the league’s concussion protocol, there were several other key Colts players that would suffer injury and exit Thursday night’s game as well.

Wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, center Ryan Kelly, and cornerback Vontae Davis, among others, all left Thursday’s game with respective injuries and would not return. Hilton, who would try to come back on an offensive drive during the 3rd quarter, would last only one play before having to return to the sidelines.

Looking Forward

It appears as though Luck has been cleared to return to practice on Monday, which is a good sign for Colts fans. While we await injury updates on all of those injured in the Thanksgiving night matchup, it helps that the Colts are on 11-days of rest as they will head to New York to face the Jets at MetLife Stadium on Monday Night Football.
