Road to Miami: 2019 NFL Free Agency Winners & Losers

As teams begin to shift their focus toward the 2019 NFL Draft, we’re looking back at the free agency winners and losers on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami.

Winners

Cleveland Browns

“The Browns are building a powerhouse. Believe it. Those are words that don’t seem to go together, but General Manager John Dorsey continues to push the right buttons. He gave up plenty to the New York Giants in the trade for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., but it was well worth it. The Browns get perhaps the game’s most dynamic player.

They’ll have to deal with expectations, for a change, and they’ll have a rookie head coach in Freddie Kitchens. But having expectations is a good problem to have.” — Mark Maske, Washington Post

Green Bay Packers

“The Packers ranked 22nd in points allowed, 22nd in rushing yards allowed, 19th in turnover differential and just weren’t able to get enough key stops on defense when it mattered most. As a result, we saw a rare strategy from Green Bay: spend big in free agency.

The Packers added linebackers Preston Smith (four years, $52 million) and Za’Darius Smith (four years, $66 million), as well as safety Adrian Amos (four years, $37 million) to help fix a mediocre to below-average defense. Amos’ addition also hurts the Packers’ biggest rival and top competitor in the NFC North division, the Chicago Bears.” — Nick Goss, NBC Sports

Indianapolis Colts

Selective and patient. Colts general manager Chris Ballard didn’t let last season’s 10-6 record and playoff appearance dictate how he would attack the offseason. He has been selective in how he has used the NFL’s most salary-cap space by signing just two outside free agents — defensive end Justin Houston and receiver Devin Funchess. He has remained patient and is committed to continuing to build the roster through the draft. The Colts currently have nine picks later this month.” — Mike Wells, ESPN.com

New York Jets

“Winning free agency in March rarely translates into winning games between September and December. But the Jets, like the Raiders, were in desperate need of upgrading the roster, and they have taken positive steps by adding running back Le’Veon Bell, wide receiver Jamison Crowder and linebacker C.J. Mosley.

On offense, it’s all about aiding the development of young quarterback Sam Darnold. And the arrivals of Bell and Crowder help greatly in that regard.” — Mark Maske, Washington Post

Losers

New York Giants

“If the best organizations follow a clear vision, what can we say about the Giants?

The Giants now have one of the NFL’s least-talented rosters, and hope for improving it is limited by their decision to let Collins walk away (rather than making a trade) and settling for a modest return in the Beckham trade. They don’t seem to be following a linear plan and are years late on initiating a succession plan at quarterback. It is as though the Giants — and general manager Dave Gettleman in particular — are operating in a long-discarded era of NFL team building.” — Kevin Seifert, ESPN.com

Pittsburgh Steelers

“The Steelers acquired just third- and fifth-round draft picks, as well as no salary cap relief, from the Raiders in exchange for Antonio Brown (arguably the league’s top wide receiver). Pittsburgh also wasn’t able to re-sign star running back Le’Veon Bell, and there are no running backs on the free agent market capable of adequately replacing him. The Steelers haven’t added any key pieces to a defense that was mediocre last season, either.

Could we finally be seeing the end of the Steelers’ run as a top contender in the AFC? It sure looks like it.” — Nick Goss, NBC Sports

Tennessee Titans

“The Titans were one of the most active teams in the NFL, making three major deals by signing offensive lineman Rodger Saffold, receiver Adam Humphries and defensive end Cameron Wake while also re-signing Vaccaro at safety. I’m just not certain what to make of it.

On the one hand, giving Wake $10 million guaranteed at age 37 seems excessively hopeful. But on the other, giving relatively inaccurate quarterback Marcus Mariota a productive slot receiver in Humphries seems like a good idea. Saffold, assuming he is healthy, fits the smashmouth run style the Titans are expected to pursue.

I understand the Titans’ incentive after they were in the AFC South division race until Week 17 last season. But will this eclectic haul do anything to push them past the Texans and Colts?” — Kevin Seifert, ESPN.com

Washington Redskins

“[Safety Landon] Collins is an excellent player who will help the defense. But $84 million to a safety? Some in and around the league were baffled about that.” — Mark Maske, Washington Post

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXVI

In 2018, the city of Minneapolis hosted Super Bowl 52, a Philadelphia Eagles victory over the New England Patriots. But in 1992, the city hosted their first-ever, as the Road to Super Bowl 53 features a showdown between the returning Buffalo Bills and the NFC-champion Washington Redskins.

Buffalo Falls Short (Again)

Played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Washington Redskins would defeat the two-time defending AFC champion Buffalo Bills by a score of 37-24, claiming their Lombardi trophy in Super Bowl XXVI.

After what was an incredible season for both teams in 1991-92, the Redskins would jump out to an impressive 24-0 lead early in Super Bowl XXVI. From that point forward, the Bills would have trouble gaining back that ground, eventually scoring 24 points of their own but losing by 13. Mark Rypien, quarterback for the Redskins, would capture Super Bowl MVP honors in 1992 with 292 yards and two touchdowns.

CBS was the exclusive home of Super Bowl XXVI for those watching at home, once gain having Pat Summerall and John Madden handle broadcasting duties, which tallied up to around 79.6 million viewers. The cost of a 30-second commercial spot jumped to $850,000, by far and large the most expensive to date.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXII

Two teams looking to rebound on the Road to Super Bowl 53, the two-time AFC champion Denver Broncos made their second-straight Super Bowl appearance in 1988, squaring off against the NFC-champion Washington Redskins in Suepr Bowl XXII.

Doug Williams Shines

Played on January 31, 1988 in front of over 73,000 fans at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, California, the Washington Redskins would become the second-straight NFC champion to defeat the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl, capturing Super Bowl XXII by a score of 42-10.

This was the Redskins’ fourth Super Bowl appearances in the first 22 years. Despite entering the 1987-88 season as the Redskins backup quarterback, Doug Williams would go on to take Super Bowl MVP honors, completing 18 of his 29 attempts for a record 340 yards and four touchdowns. The Redskins scored 35 of their then-record 42 points in just the second quarter alone, an impressive feat.

The cost of a 30-second commercial in 1988 rose to $645,000 with Super Bowl XXI. The big game was broadcast to over 80 million fans around the world on ABC, with announcers Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf on the call. Halftime included Chubby Checker and The Rockettes, which made for a very interesting show, and the National Anthem was sung by Herb Alpert.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XVIII

Making their second-straight appearance, the Washington Redskins are headed to Tampa, Florida, host of Super Bowl LV in 2021, for Super Bowl XVIII against the Los Angeles Raiders.

Raiders Dominate

Entering the game as defending champions and odds-on favorites to capture their second-straight Super Bowl, it was a different story in 1984 for the Washington Redskins, as the team would get blown out by the AFC-champion Los Angeles Raiders by a score of 38-9 in Super Bowl XVIII. With nearly 73,000 fans in attendance, the Super Bowl was hosted for the first time in Tampa, Florida, a city that would go on to host many more, including Super Bowl LV in 2021.

After jumping out to an early lead before halftime, the Raiders never looked back. For the second straight year, a record-setting running back would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors, as Raiders running back Marcus Allen would carry the ball 20 times for a then-record 191 yards and two touchdowns.

In 1984, the cost of commercials during the big game actually dropped for the first time in years, clocking in at $368,000 for a 30-second spot. Super Bowl XVIII is also remembered by many as the birthplace of the Apple advertising campaigns, where the iconic Apple Macintosh commercial would go on air.

Around 77 million viewers tuned in to catch Super Bowl XVIII, with broadcasting duties being handled by Pat Summerall and former Raiders head coach John Madden. The national anthem was performed by singer Barry Manilow.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XVII

As we continue on the Road to the 2019 Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta entering Week 4 of the 2018 NFL season, we’re looking back at Super Bowl XVII between two historic franchises, the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins.

Rushing to Record-Setting Super Bowl

Played in front of over 100,000 fans strong at the famed Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, the Washington Redskins would show up and show out, capturing their first Super Bowl victory in 1983. A then-Super Bowl record, the Redskins would post 263 rushing yards in Super Bowl XVII, paving the way for running back John Riggins to walk away as the Super Bowl MVP.

Riggins would set not one but two Super Bowl records in 1983, both in rushing attempts (38) and yards rushing (166), also carrying the ball for one touchdown.

Once again, unsurprisingly, the cost of a commercial rose in 1983, rising to $400,000 for a 30-second TV spot. Over 81 million fans worldwide tuned in to catch Super Bowl XVII, with the big game’s popularity at an all-time high. The National Anthem was sung by Leslie Easterbrook, and the halftime show included Bob Jani Productions presents “KaleidoSUPERscope” with the Los Angeles Super Drill Team.

Colts VIP Update: Week 2 @ Washington Redskins

After a disappointing beginning of the season, the Indianapolis Colts (0-1) looked to bounce back in a big way in Week 2, traveling to the nations capital to take on the first of their NFC East opponents this season, Washington Redskins (1-0).

First W for Reich

Despite jumping out to a quick lead in Week 1, the Colts would eventually fall to the Cincinnati Bengals, a result Colts fans had all but become accustomed to. However, Week 2 would lend to a different storyline.

Jumping out to an early lead once again, the Colts would head into halftime up 14-3 after what can only be described as an incredibly efficient first half on both sides of the football. Held to just one field goal in the first 30 minutes of play, the Colts defense was shining, aided by a touchdown from Colts quarterback Andrew Luck to tight end Eric Ebron, his second of the season, and a rushing touchdown from rookie running back Nyheim Hines.

Sunday’s 21-9 victory would become the first of Colts head coach Frank Reich’s young career, as the Colts would avoid falling to an 0-2 start for the 5th straight year, now sitting at 1-1.

Dominance on Defense

Something not characteristically said about Colts defenses of years past, the 2018 edition of the defense, led by youth and rookie draft picks, was the star of the show in Week 2.

Spearheaded by rookie linebacker Darius Leonard, who would record 18 tackles, one sack and one forced-fumble, the Colts D would hold quarterback Alex Smith and the Washington Redskins offense to just three total field goals.

Looking Forward

The Colts stay on the road in Week 3, facing yet another NFC East opponent in the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who will have MVP-caliber quarterback Carson Wentz back at the helm.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl VII

An incredible feat, yet-to-be-matched in Super Bowls since, culminated with the Miami Dolphins ending their perfect season with a Super Bowl VII victory over the Washington Redskins. We’re taking it back to the 1972-73 NFL season on the Road to Super Bowl 2019 in Atlanta.

Pursuit of Perfection

Played on January 14, 1973, in front of over 90,000 fans strong at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California, host of Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the Miami Dolphins would capture the NFL’s first (and to this day only) perfect season, rounding it out with a 14-7 victory over the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII.

After losing to the Dallas Cowboys the previous season in Super Bowl VI, the team came back with a vengeance during their perfect run, capturing their first ever Super Bowl victory in 1973. Super Bowl MVP would go on to be awarded to safety Jake Scott, just the second defensive player in NFL history to earn MVP honors. Super Bowl VII was quite the defensive battle, to this date still being the lowest scoring game in Super Bowl history.

When the Super Bowl began airing on television, commercial air time was quite expensive, though it’s nothing compared to what it costs today. A 30-second spot on TV in 1973 was around $88,000. However, that’s chump change compared to what brands are paying in today’s day and age, well into the millions. The halftime show for Super Bowl VII consisted of another marching band act, this time Woody Herman and the University of Michigan marching band.

Road to Super Bowl 53: NFC East Preview

Featuring the Super Bowl champions, the NFC East appears to be loading up to take on the Eagles, with a new Pro Bowl quarterback taking the reigns in Washington and roster turnover in Dallas and New York. Can the Philadelphia Eagles defend their crown on the Road to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta?

Philadelphia Eagles

2017 Record: 13-3, Super Bowl LII Champions

The defending Super Bowl champions, fresh off an exciting 41-33 victory in Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, the Eagles themselves will be returning the majority of their Super Bowl champion roster, including a look at a hopefully healthy quarterback Carson Wentz.

Although the Eagles were susceptible to change in the 2018 offseason, losing key players like running back LeGarrette Blound, wide receiver Torrey Smith, defensive pass rusher Vinny Curry and tight end Brent Celek, the team did manage to bolster their already stellar defensive front, adding Seahawks Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Bennett, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, and some young weapons through the draft.

Dallas Cowboys

2017 Record: 9-7

In what was considered yet another disappointing season for the Cowboys faithful, the team shook things up in the offseason hoping to turn it around in 2018.

Despite retaining head coach Jason Garrett, the Cowboys are not without roster turnover in the 2018 offseason. The team lost two of its premier pass catchers in wide receiver Dez Bryant (released) and tight end Jason Witten (retirement), as well as two defensive staples in linebacker Anthony Hitchens and Orlando Scandrick. The Cowboys did, however, manage to bring in some big names, most notably former Rams wide receiver Tavon Austin, defensive end Kony Ealy and the former Jaguars standout receiver Allen Hurns. The Cowboys will also look forward to the return of a full season for running back Ezekiel Elliott, who was absent due to suspension for part of the 2017 season.

Washington Redskins

2017 Record: 7-9

Plenty of shakeup coming in the nation’s capital this offseason was headlined by the Washington Redskins deciding to move on from quarterback Kirk Cousins in favor of a former NFL MVP to take charge of the offense.

Shortly before losing quarterback Kirk Cousins to the Minnesota Vikings, the Redskins traded cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to the Kansas City chiefs for the Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith. After making the decision to hand the reigns to Smith, the Redskins continued their transformation, bringing in plenty of defensive talent and a talented young offensive core, most notably rookie running back Derrius Guice from LSU, linebacker Pernell McPhee and defensive back Orlando Scandrick.

New York Giants

2017 Record: 3-13

For New York Giants fans, the excitement of putting the last 12 months behind them with a fresh start at kickoff of the 2018 season will be a welcoming feeling. A 3-13 campaign, headlined by turmoil with former head coach Ben McAdoo, and an injury to Pro Bowl receiver Odell Beckham Jr., resulting in the #2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, leaves the Giants with a clean slate on the Road to Super Bowl 53.

Despite losing key players such as defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul and wide receiver Brandon Marshall, the Giants reloaded on both sides of the ball, drafting possibly the most exciting player in the 2018 NFL Draft in running back Saquon Barkley out of Penn State, signing former New England Patriots offensive lineman Nate Solder and trading for former Los Angeles Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree.

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 11-15

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 11-15.

#11: Miami Dolphins

CBS Sports, Bleacher Report: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia | NFL.com: Vita Vea, DT, Washington

“The Dolphins have been showing interest in Smith, one of the draft’s top linebackers. He’d be the long-term stud the team needs next to Raekwon McMillan, and the Dolphins could make him the immediate starter at WILL and look to trade Kiko Alonso to another team where he’d be a better fit. They can also think about getting out from Alonso’s deal next offseason if nothing else.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#12: Buffalo Bills

CBS Sports (traded to Cleveland Browns): Vita Vea, DT, Washington | Bleacher Report (traded to Indianapolis Colts): Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA | NFL.com: Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming

“After trading back, again, the Indianapolis Colts will gain pick Nos. 12, 22 and 96 in this hypothetical deal with the Buffalo Bills in exchange for the No. 6 spot.At No. 12, Ballard and Co. still get a top-notch player who fills a huge need. Marcus Davenport is raw, coming from tiny Texas-San Antonio. But he showed during the season, at the Senior Bowl and the combine that he’s the type of athletic rarity who can make the needed improvements to make an early NFL impact.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#13: Washington Redskins

CBS Sports: Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia | Bleacher Report: Vita Vea, DT, Washington | NFL.com: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia

“Nothing wrong with more speed being added on defense, and Smith fits the bill. He’s often favorably compared to Atlanta MLB Deion Jones due to his build, and ability to play FAST.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#14: Green Bay Packers

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA | Bleacher Report: Josh Jackson, DB, Iowa

“An offseason of change has the Green Bay Packers looking like a new team heading into the draft. But that new team still has holes to fill at pass-rusher, wide receiver and cornerback.Iowa’s Josh Jackson didn’t help his cause with a 4.56-second 40-yard-dash at the combine, but his play shows a cornerback with ball skills, technique and toughness. He’s a natural fit in defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s scheme, and he and Kevin King give them one heck of a young cornerback duo.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#15: Arizona Cardinals

CBS Sports: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville | Bleacher Report: Mike Hughes, DB, UCF | NFL.com: Connor Williams, G, Texas

“Jackson isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the Cardinalshave an offensive coordinator in Mike McCoy who can build the offense to the dynamic prospect’s strengths. Jackson isn’t ever going to be the best passer in the league, but good luck defending a running game that features David Johnson and the threat of the QB running at any time. The Cardinals would ideally trade up for one of the top four QBs, but with so many holes on the roster, they can’t afford to sacrifice picks.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports
