Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XXXVII

As we continue to enter the modern-day NFL, former Buccaneers (and current Raiders) head coach Jon Gruden gets his first Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XXXVII with a win over his former (and current) team.

Tampa Bay Dominates Super Bowl XXXVII

A Super Bowl played in front of a total of 67,603 fans, the final score of Super Bowl XXXVII was 48-21, with the Buccaneers walking away victorious. The Dixie Chicks played the National Anthem and Shania Twain was the star of the halftime show.

MVP of the game was Dexter Jackson, safety for Tampa Bay. Jackson made history as being one of the only players in the secondary to be named Super Bowl MVP. Some remember this particular Super Bowl being nicknamed the “Pirate Bowl,” and this was due to both mascots looking like a pirate.

John Madden, the legendary former head coach of the Oakland Raiders, was yet again one of the announcers for the Super Bowl this time around. Al Michaels and Melissa Stark both joined him, along with Lynn Swann. There were a total of 88.6 million viewers watching the Super Bowl this time around, and the cost of a 30 second commercial was around $2.1 million. The game aired on the ABC network and the Nielsen rating was 40.7.

Road to Super Bowl 53: NFC South Preview

After a seemingly disappointing year in 2017 after such a successful campaign in the 2016 season, will the NFC South be able to rebound in the 2018 NFL season on the Road to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta?

New Orleans Saints

2017 Record: 11-5, NFC South Champions

After a relatively disappointing year in 2016, the New Orleans Saints rebounded in 2017, clawing their way to an 11-5 record and walking away winners of the NFC South via a tiebreaker with the Carolina Panthers.

The 2018 offseason was about not only securing the present, but preparing for life post-quarterback Drew Brees. While the status of Brees’ re-signing was up in the air, the Saints and Brees eventually agreed to a two-year contract extension, giving the Saints a few more years to prepare for the future. But that doesn’t mean the team is using Brees as a placeholder. The team reloaded on offense, signing former Browns running back Terrance West to pair with 2017 offensive standout rookie in Alvin Kamara. Returning wide receivers Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr., the team also signed former Bears wide receiver Cameron Meredith, brought back tight end Benjamin Watson, and re-signed offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod.

Carolina Panthers

2017 Record: 11-5

After finishing second in the division and trading offensive playmaking wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, the Carolina Panthers were due for a minor reset in the 2018 offseason. However, a relatively quiet offseason leaves fans wondering what the 2018 edition of the Panthers might look like once they hit the field.

Running back Jonathan Stewart departed in favor of the New York Giants, All-Pro offensive lineman Andrew Norwell signed a monster contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and defensive playmakers Star Lotulelei and Kurt Coleman also chose to go elsewhere. To help buffer those losses, the Panthers brought in defensive backs Da’Norris Search and Mike Adams, defensive tackle Dontari Poe, and acquired wide receivers Torrey Smith (PHI) and D.J. Moore (2018 NFL Draft, #24 overall pick).

Atlanta Falcons

2017 Record: 10-6

Just a year removed from a standout campaign in 2016, which saw the team capture the #2 overall seed in the NFC Playoffs and a Super Bowl LI appearance against the New England Patriots, the Falcons seemingly regressed in 2017, finishing with a 10-6 record and failing to make the playoffs.

The headline of the 2018 offseason thus far for the Falcons (and the NFL, for that matter) has been the ongoing contract negotiations (or lack thereof) with wide receiver Julio Jones, who reportedly is ready to holdout amidst the talks.

On the transactional side, the Falcons were relatively quiet on the free agency front, bringing in players like defensive backs Leon McFadden and Justin Bethel. But it’s the team’s 1st-round draft pick that has fans excited.. Calvin Ridley, a lengthy wide receiver out of Alabama, who has drawn comparisons to Jones himself.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2017 Record: 5-11

After a disappointing 5-11 campaign in 2017, it appears the offseason made matters worse for Buccaneers fans across the country.

Re-signing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick became a priority the team didn’t know they needed after starting quarterback Jameis Winston received a three-game suspension due to conduct detrimental. And after losing running back Doug Martin (OAK) and a handful of key defensive contributors, the team was left looking at a minor rebuild.

Bulking up on the defensive side of the football, the Buccaneers signed Super Bowl champion defensive end Vinny Curry and acquired New York Giants standout Jason Pierre-Paul via trade, as well as drafting defensive tackle Vita Via out of Washington, adding to the depth of the defensive front-seven. To help on the offensive side, the team re-signed running back Charles Sims and drafted running back Ronald Jones out of USC to help carry the load.

2017 Expert NFL Mock Draft (#16-20)

Just over a week and a half until the 2017 NFL Draft, we’re taking a look at who the experts think might be the big winners in the first round. A look at picks #16-20 in next Thursday’s NFL Draft from Philadelphia, PA.

#16: Baltimore Ravens

CBS Sports: Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama | Bleacher Report: John Ross, WR, Washington | MMQB: Taco Charlton, DL, Michigan

“In the NFL, Charlton will be whatever a defensive coordinator wants him to be. Baltimore’s Dean Pees will love Charlton’s length (he measured just under 6’6″ at the combine) and athleticism. He could be a great playmaker against the run.” –Emily Kaplan, MMQB

#17: Washington Redskins

CBS Sports: Jabrill Peppers, S-LB, Michigan | Bleacher Report: Jonathan Allen, DL, Alabama | MMQB: Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan

“Peppers is a safety-linebacker hybrid who fills an obvious need in the Redskins’ secondary. He’s so versatile, in fact, that some scouts think he can play on both sides of the ball, and return kicks too.” –Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports

#18: Tennessee Titans

CBS Sports: Budda Baker, S, Washington | Bleacher Report: Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State | MMQB: John Ross, WR, Washington

“The tape shows Conley as a complete cornerback and that’s what the Titans need. In Tennessee, Conley could be the No. 1 cornerback as a rookie. Pairing him with Jamal Adams and Kevin Byard makes this one of the NFL’s best up-and-coming secondaries, too.” –Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#19: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

CBS Sports, Bleacher Report, MMQB: Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State

“(Albert) Breer has alluded to some off-the-field concerns teams have about Cook, but his talents cannot be understated. Cook has been compared to everyone from Jamaal Charles to Fred Taylor. A dynamic weapon as a runner or when he splits out wide, he’d make an offense already featuring Jameis Winston and Mike Evans very difficult to game-plan for.” –Emily Kaplan, MMQB

#20: Denver Broncos

CBS Sports: Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin | Bleacher Report: Garett Bolles, OT, Utah | MMQB: Forrest Lamp, OL, Western Kentucky

“The Denver Broncos need an answer at left tackle and Bolles can be the solution. He’s shown incredible improvement since stepping onto the Utah campus last August and has the athletic tools and work ethic to continue developing into a solid starter.” –Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

NFL Division Preview: NFC South

The NFC South produced the NFC’s Super Bowl 50 participant in the Carolina Panthers in 2015. Here’s what the road to Super Bowl LI in Houston looks like for the division.

DivisionPreview (4)

Last Year (2015): Carolina Panthers (15-1), Atlanta Falcons (8-8), New Orleans Saints (7-9), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-10)

The Carolina Panthers boasted the best record in the NFL in 2015, finishing at 15-1, the one loss being to the division-rival Atlanta Falcons. The team, however, experienced a blow to their defense following their Super Bowl 50 loss to the Denver Broncos. Cornerback Josh Norman, arguably the MVP of the entire Panthers team, let alone the defense, had his franchise tag rescinded in April, resulting in the CB bolting for the Washington Redskins.

The Atlanta Falcons improved in 2015 under new head coach Dan Quinn, but still struggled mightily. The team did not make any big splashes in the offseason, losing wide receiver Roddy White being their most notable departure.

The New Orleans Saints remained quiet as well, with a mundane 2016 NFL Draft class and no big free agency moves.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a surprise move by firing head coach Lovie Smith after their improved 6-10 season with rookie quarterback Jameis Winston. The Bucs promoted offensive linemen Dirk Koetter to head coach, with Smith jetting for the college realm of Illinois.

Prediction; Panthers take the division again, but the Buccaneers continue to make an improvement and challenge for the 2nd spot.

2016 NFL Draft Preview

As the NFL’s offseason marches on, the next milestone in the path to the regular season is the 2016 NFL Draft. As we are just one month away, we take a look at the NFL Draft and it’s brightest prospects.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (1)

The biggest story of the 2016 NFL Draft is the action that might be happening at the front of the pack. Although the Tennessee Titans hold the rights to the #1 overall pick, the odds of the Titans actually making that selection seem to vary.

California quarterback Jared Goff and North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz appear to be the most coveted prizes in the 2016 NFL Draft. Movement in the top 10 picks of the draft appears to be imminent, with the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and more looking to the draft for their franchise quarterbacks.

Offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil from Ole Miss has cemented himself as the top selection in the draft, although the Titans have repeatedly expressed desire to listen to offers for the top pick in the draft. Other top prospects who have cemented themselves in the top 10 of the NFL Draft include defensive back Jalen Ramsey from Florida State, and defensive lineman Joey Bosa from Ohio State University.

Game Recap: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts look good. It’s week 12. It’s about time. The 40-year old Matt Hasselbeck carried the Indianapolis Colts to a nice victory over 21-year old Jameis Winston. Now, the Colts are playing with a winning record 6-5. Finally.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers play a fast game, and in this case, the Colts were up to the challenge. This might not have been the most exciting game of the Colts season, but that’s fine. It’s a win. It’s still possible to get that 11-5 season that has defined Chuck Pagano’s tenure.

The Colts are starting to play their best football with their backup QB. Hasselbeck is accurate and getting rid of the ball quickly. But, he is also equally good at showing his experience in the decisions he makes while in the pocket. He will take his time, when he knows he has it, and make the right throw. His experience shown through this game, especially in comparison to the young’un Winston, who had trouble converting late in the game. Hasselbeck stayed in control, and late in the game, knew he was in control. He was familiar with the protection he was getting and comfortable with the sort of defense the Bucs presented.

There were few errors, or what Hasselbeck calls his “Favre Moments.” He may not have wanted the weight of the team resting on his shoulders, but he seems comfortable with it. He’s 4-0 as a 40 year old starter. The media has made a lot of his age, but really. That’s impressive. It deserves the attention. The Colts themselves also didn’t shoot themselves in the foot, as has been usual this season. They didn’t rack up a high number of costly penalties. Instead the Buccaneers had that issue with 12. Without these penalties, it could have looked like a very different game.

The game opened with exchanges of field goals. There were no three-and-outs. Both teams were exchanging points for points, but having trouble once it came to the red-zone. After the Bucs late second-quarter touchdown, the Colts came back after halftime. They made adjustments and played a better game. And it led to a great win. If this is what the Colts look like playing in a rhythm, it’s amazing to think of what they could look like if they get in gear with Andrew Luck.

Hasselbeck found WR Donte Moncrief to make those tough, but necessary conversions on third down. And as always T.Y. Hilton had a good game too. The run game had trouble, which is why Hasselbeck had to step up. They were getting anywhere, so Matt turned to passing. Hasselbeck seems to find one go-to receiver a game. Someone he clicks with. In this game it was Moncrief. Maybe this sudden surge came from Reggie Wayne’s appearance in Lucas Oil Stadium. Maybe the Colts WRs wanted to show off. Whatever it was, it’s nice to see the Colts in motion again. All in all, it was a nice Sunday for Colts fans.

Looking forward, the Colts face something of a threat next week against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Heinz Field on December 6th (that’s next Sunday) at 8:30 p.m. The Colts sometimes have trouble against the Steelers, but, this is a winnable game. You can buy tickets for the Colts vs. Steelers game, if you want to watch the game in person. Just remember to bring your coat! For those of us not there the game will be broadcast on NBC. Can’t wait!
