Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XLV

The 2019 NFL playoffs are nearly set… and with just a few weeks left until the field of 32 is narrowed to 12 on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami, we’re heading back to Super Bowl XLV between two 2020 Super Bowl hopefuls — the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers.

A-Rod Gets His Ring

Played in front of 91,060 fans at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texans, Super Bowl XLV between the Packers and Steelers was one of the most exciting Super Bowls in recent memory. Head coach Mike McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers would take home the Lombardi trophy, by a final score of 31-25.

Super Bowl XLV MVP honors were awarded to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, after completing 25 of his 39 pass attempts for 304 yards and three touchdowns. The Packers came out of the gates firing in the first half, building a lead that would prove to be insurmountable to the Steelers, eventually winning Green Bay the game.

Popular artist Christina Aguilera sang the national anthem before Super Bowl XLV, with the halftime show returning to it’s hip-hop roots with the Black Eyed Peas, Usher and Slash. FOX Network broadcasted Super Bowl XLV, with announcers Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Pam Oliver and Chris Myers handling broadcasting duties. The cost of a 30-second commercial in Super Bowl XLV rose to $3 million.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XLIII

With the road to the 2019 NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl 54 in Miami beginning to take shape, we’re getting closer on the Super Bowl countdown — next up, Super Bowl XLIII, an instant classic, between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals.

Steelers Corner-Pocket TD

A total of 70,774 fans were on hand to catch Super Bowl XLIII between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals, an instant classic in its own right. The Steelers would walk away victors, a 27-23 thriller over the Cardinals, in the game played once again at Tampa, Florida’s Raymond James Stadium. The victory would give the Steelers their sixth Super Bowl title in franchise history, the first franchise to win the coveted Lombardi Trophy six times.

Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes would take home Super Bowl MVP honors, finishing the game with nine catches for 131 yards and the go-ahead touchdown, a toe-dragging dramatic touchdown that would go on to be the iconic image taken away from this Super Bowl.

The National Anthem for Super Bowl XLIII would be performed by Jennifer Hudson, and halftime entertainment by the legendary Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Super Bowl XLIII would go down as the most watched Super Bowl in history (to date), with over 151 million viewers tuning into NBC to see Al Michaels, John Madden, Andrea Kremer and Alex Flanagan handle broadcasting duties. The cost of a 30-second commercial spot would continue to rise, cashing in at anywhere between $2.4 million to $3 million per commercial.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XL

Just a few short weeks left on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in 2020 in Miami, we’re kicking it back to Super Bowl XL in the Motor City, with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks facing off from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

Pittsburgh’s Big (Ben) Win

A showdown between two of the best teams that season, the Pittsburgh Steelers would walk away from Super Bowl XL as champions, a 21-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Played at the current home of the Detroit Lions, Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, nearly 70,000 fans would pack the stands for Super Bowl XL.

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors in 2006, caching five passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl XL. However, it was a different touchdown that Ward would go down in the history books for. Ward to this day remains as the only wide receiver to THROW a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XL would feature a unique National Anthem ahead of kickoff, as the anthem would be performed by a variety of artists, includingAaron NevilleAretha Franklin and Dr. John. The coin toss to get the game started would be tossed by Patriots quarterback and former Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, a coin toss representing all Super Bowl MVPs to come before him. Halftime would be performed by the legendary Rolling Stones to over 90.7 million viewers on ABC, with the broadcasting duties being handled by the legendary John Madden, Al Michaels, Michele Tafoya and Suzy Kolber.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XIV

As we continue on the Road to the 2020 Super Bowl 54 in Miami, the Los Angeles Rams make their first appearance in the Super Bowl LIV Countdown, facing off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIV.

Back to Back Steelers

Played at the gorgeous Rose Bowl in sunny Pasadena, California in front of nearly 104,000 fans, the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers met for the first time in Super Bowl XIV. Pittsburgh would capture yet another Super Bowl title, defeating the Rams by a score of 31-19. This was the first time the NFL had a team that hailed from the same surrounding area as the Super Bowl host, with the Los Angeles Rams playing just 14 miles from the LA Memorial Coliseum.

The Steelers also made history in Super Bowl XIV by becoming the first team to capture four Super Bowl titles, doing so in just a six-year span. The game was close for the majority of Super Bowl XIV, with Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw connecting with wide receiver Lynn Swann for a 47-yard touchdown pass, highlighting the Steelers victory. Bradshaw would go on to win Super Bowl XIV MVP award honors, finishing the game with 309 yards and two touchdowns.

Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier would once again handle the broadcast duties at the Super Bowl, broadcast on CBS in 1980. A 30-second commercial continued to rise in price, standing around $222,000 for Super Bowl XIV. The halftime show entertainment was provided by Up with People, presenting “A Salute to the Big Band Era.” Interesting enough, the Nielson Rating was 46.3 with an estimated 76.2 million viewers tuning into Super Bowl XIV.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XIII

Once again a showdown featuring two of the country’s most popular franchises, the Dallas Cowboys would face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIII.

Pittsburgh Prevails

Once again played in front of over 80,000 fans in Super Bowl 54 host Miami, Florida at the famed Orange Bowl, Super Bowl XIII would see the Pittsburgh Steelers, winners of the AFC, would go up against back-to-back NFC champion and the defending Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys. However, Super Bowl XIII would prove to be less enjoyable than the previous years for Dallas, as the Steelers would come away with the 35-31 victory.

Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors, completing 17 of his 30 passing attempts for 318 yards and four touchdowns, as the Steelers would never trail throughout the game. The final score of 35-31 was much closer than the game itself, as the Steelers actually led 35-17 with 19 seconds to go in the game. Super Bowl XIII would become infamously known as Black Sunday in Las Vegas, as many notable sportsbooks lost big on wagers throughout the game.

Cost of commercials during the Super Bowl continued to rise in 1979, this year’s cost of a 30-second spot rising to over $185,000 per spot, by far the most expensive to date for a Super Bowl. The announcers for Super Bowl XII were none other than Curt GowdyMerlin Olsen, and John Brodie.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl X

With the 2019 NFL season and the road to the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami just weeks away, two of America’s favorite teams, the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers, are looking to rebound after disappointing campaigns in 2018. In 1976, however, the two were squaring off in Super Bowl LIV host Miami, Florida at Orange Bowl Stadium for Super Bowl X.

Steelers Defeat “America’s Team”

Touting the title of “America’s Team” heading into Super Bowl X, the Dallas Cowboys would square off against the Pittsburgh Steelers, defending champions from Super Bowl IX (against the Minnesota Vikings). And for the second-straight season, the Steelers would walk away victors, a 21-17 win over the Cowboys.

Featuring two of the most iconic franchises in Super Bowl and NFL history, Super Bowl X was one of the more anticipated Super Bowls to date leading up to the big game. Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann, who managed to catch four passes for a record 161 yards and one touchdown, would become the first ever WR to walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors.

Pre-game, the National Anthem before Super Bowl X would be sung by Tom Sullivan in unison with “Up With People.” For halftime entertainment, fans were treated to an equally entertaining show by “Up With People,” who attributed the show to America’s Bicentennial. Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier were the announcers for Super Bowl X on CBS, and brands could expect to pay around $110,000 for a 30-second commercial in 1976.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl IX

As the 2019 NFL preseason gets underway, the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami in 2020 rolls on. After three-straight Super Bowl appearances by the Miami Dolphins, Super Bowl IX would have a new appearance from the AFC, as the Pittsburgh Steelers would face off against the Minnesota Vikings.

Franco MVP

Over 81,000 fans packed Tulane Stadium as the Super Bowl returned to New Orleans, Louisiana (host of Super Bowl 58 in 2024) for Super Bowl IX in 1975. The Pittsburgh Steelers, dethroning the Miami Dolphins after their three-straight appearances in the Super Bowl, would face off against the Minnesota Vikings in their second-straight appearance.

Pittsburgh would dominate in Super Bowl IX, with the Vikings’ only scoring of the game coming off of a blocked punt late in the game. And all of Pittsburgh’s efforts would be without some of their most noteworthy players, including linebackers Andy Russell and Jack Lambert, both of whom sat out due to injuries. The Super Bowl IX MVP award was given to Steelers running back Franco Harris, who recorded over 150 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Super Bowl IX halftime entertainment was provided by none other than Mercer Ellington and the Grambling State University band, a tribute to the great Duke Ellington.

The game was once againbroadcast on NBC and was covered by announcers Curt Gowdy, Al DeRogatis, Don Meredith and Charlie Jones.

Road to Super Bowl 52: Divisional Round

An incredible Wild Card weekend on the Road to Super Bowl 52 is officially behind us, and four teams have taken that next step they needed. The field is down to eight teams remaining, and we’re looking ahead at the Divisional Round of the 2017-18 NFL Playoffs.

Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles

(Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET on NBC)

For the first time since 2004, the Philadelphia Eagles (13-3) will host a divisional round playoff game. However, the team will most likely be underdogs heading into their matchup against the Atlanta Falcons (11-6), despite a 13-3 record and the #2 seed in the NFC.

A steady performance from the Falcons in their Wild Card matchup against the Rams, it was the defense that provided the necessary stops, holding the high-flying Rams offense in check and limiting the team to just 13 points in a 26-13 victory. The Eagles, despite a 13-3 record and one of the hottest offenses in the league early on, will have to find their rhythm with backup quarterback Nick Foles, as starter and MVP-candidate Carson Wentz will miss the entire postseason with a torn ACL suffered in the regular season.

Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots

(Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET on CBS)

One of the unexpected storylines of the 2017 NFL season was the AFC South having not one, but two teams in the playoffs, and those two teams being the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans. After a wild 22-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round, the Titans (0-7) are heading to New England to face their toughest test of the season; playing the Patriots (13-3), at home, in January, in the playoffs.

Despite rumored turmoil in the organization, the Patriots are a force to be reckoned with in the postseason at home, and many don’t expect this year to be any different. Quarterback Tom Brady finished the season with 4,577 yards, 32 touchdowns and just eight interceptions, a quietly fantastic year in what was otherwise a seemingly odd season for the Patriots.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Pittsburgh Steelers

(Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET on CBS)

Kicking off the Sunday action, the Jacksonville Jaguars (11-6) will head to Pittsburgh to take on the second-seeded Steelers (13-3) in the early game. Jacksonville hits the road after a less-than-stellar 10-3 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round, a victory that saw quarterback Blake Bortles with more rushing yards than passing yards.

The Steelers, fresh off the bye week, not surprisingly come into the matchup heavily favored. However, when the two teams matchup up early in the regular season, the Jags dominated the Steelers, a 30-9 victory that saw quarterback Ben Roethlisberger toss five interceptions. After that loss, however, the Steelers managed to win 10 of their final 11 games, with their only loss being the controversial late loss to the top-seeded Patriots.

New Orleans Saints at Minnesota Vikings

(Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET on FOX)

Rounding out the divisional round will be the red-hot New Orleans Saints (12-5) traveling to Super Bowl 52 host Minneapolis to take on the surprise of the 2017 season, the Minnesota Vikings (13-3). In a previous Week 1 matchup between the two teams, the Vikings walked away with a 29-19 victory.

The Saints, fresh off their 31-26 thriller against the Carolina Panthers which saw a late game defensive stand, will bring their high-powered offense and staggering defense into Minneapolis to face the Vikings, who have also been one of the better teams in 2017 on both sides of the football.

Surprise MVP-candidate quarterback Case Keenum, who stepped in for the injured Sam Bradford, has completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,546 yards, 22 touchdowns and just seven interceptions in his 15 games this season. The Vikings defense, not to be outdone, ranked at the top of the league in points allowed per game at just 14.8.

NFL Division Preview: AFC North

Though historically one of the the stronger divisions in the NFL, the AFC North experienced somewhat of a down year in 2015. We take a look at the AFC North’s path to Super Bowl 51 in Houston.

DivisionPreview (1)

Last Year (2015): Cincinnati Bengals (12-4), Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6), Baltimore Ravens (5-11), Cleveland Browns (3-13)

The Cincinnati Bengals saw one of their best seasons in nearly a decade in 2015, yet continued to show their playoff woes. Following quarterback Andy Dalton’s broken thumb, Cincy was relegated to rely on QB A.J. McCarron, who struggled mightily in the playoffs.

The Steelers, who were hot and cold throughout the season, made it into the playoffs before losing to the New England Patriots in the divisional round. The team returns its core of Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown on offense, regaining the services of running back Le’Veon Bell following a knee injury in 2015.

The Baltimore Ravens are still reeling from their 2015 campaign, which saw a devastating knee injury sustained to QB Joe Flacco in the closing weeks of the season. Flacco plans to be ready to play at the beginning of the season, at what form or level remains to be seen.

And the Cleveland Browns. Well, they were the Cleveland Browns in 2015. The team is hoping to utilize the services of quarterback and former #2 pick Robert Griffin III, following the release of Johnny Manziel. The team, with new head coach Hue Jackson, looks to try and end the “Cleveland curse,” but still remains quite a mess.

Prediction: The Bengals will continue to rule the roost, in close contention with the Steelers. The drop from #2 to #3 in the division is a cliff.

Excited for the 2016 NFL Regular Season? Us too. That’s why we’ve made all of our tickets for the Colts VIP Tailgates and the 2017 Players Tailgate at Super Bowl 51 in Houston available NOW!

Colts vs. Steelers

Two years in a row, the Indianapolis Colts will have to play the Pittsburgh Steelers at home. That hurts. Most predictions for the Colts put them at 12-4. One of those losses gets chalked up to the Steelers.

Ben Roethlisberger is a pretty good quarterback. He doesn’t often let anyone forget that. Take for instance, the last time the Colts played the Steelers. Steelers outscored the Colts 51-34. That game showed just how dependent the Colts are on cornerback Vontae Davis. And it makes the whole of the Colts defense look pretty precarious.

For a traditionally defense-oriented team, the Steelers have been inadequate as of late. They’ve tried to compensate for this by choosing defensive players in the draft. In the first round, Steelers chose linebacker Bud Dupree. He’s a linebacker with speed and pass-rush capabilities. The Steelers two cover corners, Senquez Golson and Doran Grant, could also be good this season. These new guys have potential, if they could stay uninjured.

The Colts have almost as much trouble defending against the Steelers as they do the Patriots.  If the Colts lose another good player on defense or don’t play up to potential, no matter how high they score, it won’t be enough.

The Colts face the Steelers in week 13 of their NFL season. The game should be a cold one. It’s in Heinz Field Pittsburgh PA, December 6th. Sunday Night Football, baby.

Kickoff is slated to start at 8:30 p.m. That game will be broadcast on NBC. If you want to go watch that game, you can still purchase Colts vs Steelers tickets.
