Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XL

Just a few short weeks left on the Road to Super Bowl 53 in 2019 in Atlanta, we’re kicking it back to Super Bowl XL in the Motor City, with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks facing off from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

Another For New England

A showdown between two of the best teams that season, the Pittsburgh Steelers would walk away from Super Bowl XL as champions, a 21-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Played at the current home of the Detroit Lions, Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, nearly 70,000 fans would pack the stands for Super Bowl XL.

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors in 2006, caching five passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl XL. However, it was a different touchdown that Ward would go down in the history books for. Ward to this day remains as the only wide receiver to THROW a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XL would feature a unique National Anthem ahead of kickoff, as the anthem would be performed by a variety of artists, includingAaron NevilleAretha Franklin and Dr. John. The coin toss to get the game started would be tossed by Patriots quarterback and former Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, a coin toss representing all Super Bowl MVPs to come before him. Halftime would be performed by the legendary Rolling Stones to over 90.7 million viewers on ABC, with the broadcasting duties being handled by the legendary John Madden, Al Michaels, Michele Tafoya and Suzy Kolber.

Road to Super Bowl 53: NFC West Preview

A change at the top in what looks to be promising future for the entirety of the NFC West headlined the 2017 NFL season. And despite faltering in the playoffs, the future for most of the NFC West appears to be bright, with one of the hottest new teams setting their sights on Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta.

Los Angeles Rams

2017 Record: 11-5, NFC West Champions

The surprise of the 2017 NFL season, rookie head coach Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams jumped out to a 7-2 start on the season before cooling off to finish at 11-5. And despite losing in the Wild Card round to the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons, fans appear to be impressed with what the Rams produced.. and they didn’t stop there.

Many are crowning the Rams as the ‘winners’ of the 2018 NFL Free Agency period, bringing in key additions (and big names) like defensive backs Marcus Peters (Kansas City), Sam Shields (Green Bay) and Aqib Talib (Denver), defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh (Miami) and wide receiver Brandin Cooks (New England). With such big names, and a seemingly successful campaign in 2017, expectations are rightfully high as we approach the beginning of a new season.

Seattle Seahawks

2017 Record: 9-7

Opposite of their division-rivals in 2017, the Seattle Seahawks had a seemingly ‘down’ year in 2017, finishing at 9-7 and missing the playoffs.

The Seahawks weren’t content with trying for different results with the same team, opting to reload the roster through free agency with a slew of one-year contracts, including wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Jaron Brown, defensive pass rusher Barkevious Mingo, and boosting their secondary by signing defensive backs Mo Alexander,  and Dontae Johnson.

Fans will be left adjusting to a massively-different look for the Seahawks on defense, featuring the departures of staples such as cornerback Richard Sherman, who signed with the division-rival 49ers, and safety Kam Chancellor, who announced his retirement in late June.

Arizona Cardinals

2017 Record: 8-8

In what seemed to be an odd year for the Cardinals, 2017 saw the team win and lose nearly every-other game, losing key players such as quarterback Carson Palmer to injury once again. And in the 2018 offseason, the Cardinals saw plenty of change.

Head coach Bruce Arians and quarterback Carson Palmer respectively announced their retirements early in the offseason, setting in motion a season of change in all aspects for Big Red. Bringing in quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon to battle for the starting spot, and drafting rookie quarterback Josh Rosen out of UCLA, ensures the team has plenty of competition in the QB room. The team also added some offensive weapons in the receiving corps, signing former Dallas Cowboy Brice Butler and drafting the talented Christian Kirk out of Texas A&M.

San Francisco 49ers

2017 Record: 6-10

Quite possibly on of the more intriguing storylines to watch heading into the 2018 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers started the 2017 season 0-9 and were seemingly playing for the draft. However, a mid-season trade their newly-minted franchise quarterback in former Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo helped spark the team’s wining 6 of their last 7 games to finish at 6-10.

Aside from trading for their franchise-quarterback, the 49ers did plenty in the 2018 offseason to help build around him, bringing in playmakers like former Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon, securing the offensive line and signing former division-rival cornerback Richard Sherman on defense. In the draft, the 49ers, grabbed a solid offensive line presence in Notre Dame right tackle Mike McGlinchey in the first round before grabbing Washington wide receiver and playmaker Dante Pettis in the second.

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 16-20

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 16-20.

#16: Baltimore Ravens

CBS Sports: Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech | Bleacher Report, NFL.com: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama

“The Ravens get a great value here in Edmunds, who doesn’t turn 20 until after the draft and has as much upside as any prospect this year. He’s scheme versatile and should be an interesting chess piece for the Ravens’ defense, someone who can line up next to C.J. Mosley inside or potentially be groomed to take over for Terrell Suggs down the road.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#17: Los Angeles Chargers

CBS Sports: Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama | Bleacher Report: Connor Williams, OT, Texas | NFL.com: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville

“The first offensive tackle comes off the board at pick No. 17, and he’s an excellent fit and value for the Los Angeles Chargers. An aggressive 2017 draft and the signing of Mike Pouncey has the line in good shape for this year, but the future needs addressing, and Williams can be that left tackle of the present and long-term plan.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#18: Seattle Seahawks

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Will Hernandez, G, UTEP | Bleacher Report: Derwin James, S, Florida State

“With the loss of DT Sheldon Richardson in free agency, and an obvious rebuild needed on that side of the ball, a pick to help the D makes sense. But, it also makes sense to do more to take care of the team’s No. 1 asset, QB Russell Wilson.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#19: Dallas Cowboys

CBS Sports: Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State | Bleacher Report: Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama | NFL.com: Mike Hughes, DB, UCF

“Defense, defense, defense. That’s how the Cowboys’ draft board should read with a wide receiver and offensive guard sprinkled in along the way. Rashaan Evans can do it all—NFL clubs have asked him to play outside linebacker or edge-rusher. In Dallas, he’s a natural to replace departed free agent Anthony Hitchens and adds youth and speed to a defense that’s being rebuilt well through the draft.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#20: Detroit Lions

CBS Sports: Josh Jackson, DB, Iowa | Bleacher Report: Harold Landry, EDGE, Boston College | NFL.com: Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama

“The Lions re-signed Nevin Lawson and brought in Deshawn Shead, but neither should prevent them from selecting a potential starter at the position across from Darius Slay should the right opportunity present itself. Matt Patricia gets a ballhawk with this pick who led the nation in interceptions last year.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

The matchup for Super Bowl 52 is SET! And as the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots get set to head for Minneapolis for Super Bowl LII, we’re looking back at Super Bowl XLVIII between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks.

February 2, 2014

In the first of quarterback Peyton Manning’s two Super Bowl visits post-Indianapolis Colts, the Denver Broncos took on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Despite being an outdoor Super Bowl in a cold-weather city, there were nearly 83,000 fans in attendance for the big game!

Seahawks linebacker Malcom Smith would break the streak of quarterback MVP’s, earning Super Bowl XLVIII honors with a strong performance. Smith finished the game with nine tackles, a recovered fumble and an interception returned 69 yards for a touchdown.

Super Bowl XLVIII went down in the record books as the largest-watched event in the history of television, broadcast on FOX to over 167 million viewers. Announcers Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Pam Oliver and Erin Andrews would handle broadcasting duties, and the cost of a 30-second spot would jump to $4 million. Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be cast for Super Bowl halftime duties in 2014.

NFL Kickoff Special: Early Super Bowl LII Predictions

Kickoff has finally arrived! As the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs get ready to square off in the NFL’s first game of the 2017 season, we’re taking a look at some of the early predictions by the experts for Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

2017 NFL Kickoff Super Bowl LII Predictions

Bleacher Report: New England Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers

In Bleacher Report’s NFL season preview, a panel of 10 the sports outlet’s most talented and experienced writers and analysts got together to discuss the upcoming season. The matchup of New England vs. Green Bay in Super Bowl LII was the most popular choice.

“The leading vote-getter was the matchup many are hoping for. The television networks certainly are. After all, the Patriots and the Packers would be a programmer’s dream. Two of the NFL’s most successful and popular franchises. And two of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game in Brady and Aaron Rodgers. The Packers came up just short last year with a flawed team that was exposed by the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game. An improved defense will put them over the top in 2017.” Read the full preview here.

Judy Battista, NFL.com: New England Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers

“It’s practically impossible to pick against a team that won the Super Bowl a year ago and improved its offense and defense in the offseason. This might be the best Patriots team yet — New England will repeat as champion.” Read the full preview here.

Steve Wyche, NFL.com: Oakland Raiders vs. Seattle Seahawks

Derek Carr fakes the handoff to Marshawn at the 1 then hits him on a waggle pass to win it in the waning seconds.” – Read the full preview here.

Andy Benoit, Sports Illustrated: New England Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers

“Of course, none of these teams compares with the Patriots, that franchise you either outright love or outright hate. I searched for the courage to pick against New England, but common sense kept getting in the way…I’ll go with the Pats over the Pack, who, while talented, run too hot and cold.” Read the full preview here.

Steven Ruiz, USA Today: Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots

“In the Super Bowl, the Seahawks get some revenge and knock off a one-loss Patriots team to lift their second Lombardi Trophy. Russell Wilson wins Super Bowl MVP.” Read the full preview here.

Indianapolis Colts Season Preview: Weeks 1-4

As we embark upon the quietest months of the NFL’s offseason, teams get to work behind the scenes preparing for the road to Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis. We’re taking a look at the Indianapolis Colts 2017 schedule, the marquee games, matchups and moments looking forward.

Week 1: Indianapolis Colts @ Los Angeles Rams – Sept. 10, 4:05 p.m. ET (CBS)

The Colts will travel to Los Angeles, California for the first time in decades to face the LA Rams, the newly-relocated team that formerly called St. Louis, Missouri home. Los Angeles is boasting a new head coach and a re-vamped roster, offering the also renovated Colts roster their first test of the 2017 NFL season. Fans will get a good early window into the re-tooled Colts defense as one of the best running backs in the entire league, Todd Gurley III, will look to lead the offensive attack for the Rams, lining up behind second-year quarterback Jared Goff.

Week 2: Arizona Cardinals @ Indianapolis Colts – Sept. 17, 1 p.m. ET (FOX)

A homecoming of sorts in Week 2, as former Colts offensive coordinator (and interim head coach) Bruce Arians leads his Arizona Cardinals into Lucas Oil Stadium for the home opener. Arians led the Colts to a 9-3 record in 2012 while current head coach Chuck Pagano underwent cancer treatment, instrumental in helping lead the team to their 2012 playoff berth. This game marks the second matchup between the two as head coaches, with the Cardinals taking a 40-11 victory against the Colts in 2013.

Week 3: Cleveland Browns @ Indianapolis Colts – Sept. 24, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)

The #1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Myles Garrett, makes his way to Lucas Oil Stadium in Week 3, in a game that Colts fans hope to seldom hear his name called. This will be the third time the Browns and Colts have met during current head coach Chuck Pagano’s tenure, with the Colts winning both previous meetings. Who will be lining up at quarterback for the Browns remains to be seen, but Colts fans hope quarterback Andrew Luck can take advantage of the Browns defense that helped lead the team to a 1-15 record in 2016.

Week 4: Indianapolis Colts @ Seattle Seahawks – Oct. 1, 8:30 p.m. ET (NBC)

Arguably one of the most anticipated matchups of the 2017 NFL season, the two brightest (QB) members of the 2012 draft class square off in a Sunday Night Football battle. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck holds a 1-0 advantage over Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, a 34-28 victory in 2013. This time, however, the teams meet at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, considered one of the most hostile environments in all the NFL, a game that is sure to test the Colts in communication, and a difficult matchup for the team’s young defense.

2017 Expert NFL Mock Draft (#26-32)

The day before the 2017 NFL Draft, find out who experts believe will go #26-32, rounding out the first round on Thursday night.

#26: Seattle Seahawks

CBS Sports: Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida | Bleacher Report, MMQB: Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wiscosin |

“Ryan Ramczyk is am[sic] intriguing option, given his tools and tape, but he started just one season at Wisconsin and is dealing with a torn labrum that’s limiting his pre-draft workouts. The tools are there when you watch him in Big Ten tape, but you’re betting on his continued development on a small sample size.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#27: Kansas City Chiefs

CBS Sports: Raekwon McMillan, LB, Ohio State | Bleacher Report: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech | MMQB: Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama

“With Derrick Johnson set to turn 35 next season, McMillian is an athletic playmaker who could provide a smooth transition once Johnson calls it a career. Vanderbilt’s Zach Cunningham is also an option here, but a lackluster combine could have personnel types revisiting his game tape.” – Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports

#28: Dallas Cowboys

CBS Sports: Carl Lawson, DE, Auburn | Bleacher Report: Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee | MMQB: David Njoku, TE, Miami

“The classic “excellent veteran is aging, so let’s find him a replacement” scenario surfaces yet again. Here, Jerry Jones finds a successor for Jason Witten. Njoku, one of the youngest players in this year’s draft (he turns 21 in July) has a high ceiling, as he has only been playing tight end for two years. A core featuring Njoku, Dak Prescott (23-years-old) and Ezekiel Elliott (21)? That will keep Dallas front-running in the NFC East for years to come.” – Emily Kaplan, MMQB

#29: Green Bay Packers

CBS Sports: T.J. Watt, LB, Wisconsin | Bleacher Report: Forrest Lamp, OG, Western Kentucky | MMQB: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford

“The Packers are in the market for pass rushers. And what’s better than having one Clay Matthews? Having two — Watt (yep, he’s J.J.’s younger brother) has drawn comparisons to Matthews. Measuring 6-5, 243, Watt ran a 4.69 40 at the combine, and finished last season with 11.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss.” – Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports

#30: Pittsburgh Steelers

CBS Sports: Derek Rivers, DE, Youngstown State | Bleacher Report: Takkarist McKinley, EDGE, UCLA | MMQB: T.J. Watt, LB, Wisconsin

“Takkarist McKinley is tailor-made for the 3-4 pass-rusher role the Steelers need. He’s long, physical, fast and has the production on tape to warrant a first-round selection. He is undergoing shoulder surgery as I’m writing this for a torn labrum, but will be back in time for minicamp. After an impressive showing in Indianapolis, McKinley should be a first-rounder.” –Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#31: Atlanta Falcons

CBS Sports, MMQB: Charles Harris, DE, Missouri | Bleacher Report: Montravius Adams, DL, Auburn |

“The Falcons could use pass-rushers. The going rule in today’s NFL is that you need three good ones to be successful. Pair Harris with the Clemson crew (Vic Beasley and Grady Jarrett, coming off a breakout Super Bowl performance), and Atlanta has a trio to harass quarterbacks of the NFC South for a very long time.” – Emily Kaplan, MMQB

#32: New England Patriots

CBS Sports: David Njoku, TE, Miami | Bleacher Report: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford | MMQB: Tim Williams, LB, Alabama

“McCaffrey is a dynamic running back, a versatile offensive weapon and a top-notch athlete. Whether he’s in New England, Kansas City or Green Bay (my ideal fits) he’ll be a threat as a runner, receiver and return man. However you can get him touches, he’ll respond with yards and points.” –Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

Road to Super Bowl LI: Divisional Weekend

Eight teams took the field during Wild Card Weekend last week, with only four advancing. Now, with just eight teams remaining in the NFL Playoffs, the vital Divisional Weekend is upon us, with the winners advancing to their respective conference championships. The Road to Super Bowl LI takes another step toward Houston.

Seattle Seahawks @ Atlanta Falcons (Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET on FOX)

A divisional rematch from three years ago, the red-hot Seattle Seahawks head to Atlanta to take on the #2-seed Falcons in what could be Atlanta’s final time playing in the Georgia Dome. Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan rides an MVP-worthy season into Saturday’s divisional matchup, with an offense that has seen wild success in the 2016 NFL season.

Houston Texans @ New England Patriots (Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET on CBS)

The AFC South champion Houston Texans, fresh off a Wild Card victory over the Oakland Raiders, head to Foxboro on Saturday night to face up against the always-formidable New England Patriots. Houston, boasting the #1-ranked defense in the NFL, knows the challenge that lies ahead in facing Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, one of the greatest postseason quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Kansas City Chiefs (Sunday, 11:05 p.m. ET on NBC)

After beating down the Miami Dolphins in their Wild Card game, the Pittsburgh Steelers bring their bruising defense and high-flying offense to Kansas City to face the #2-seed Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs hope to be able to contain the “Three B’s” of the Steelers on Sunday, in quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Le’Veon Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown. Both teams, however, have two of the hottest in the NFL this season.

Green Bay Packers @ Dallas Cowboys (Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET on FOX)

Quite possibly the most anticipated matchup of the 2016 NFL Playoffs thus far, the Green Bay Packers, winners of their last six in a row, travel to Dallas to take on the dynamic Dallas Cowboys team, headlined by rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott.

Despite their lack of playoff experience, the Cowboys boast one of the most efficient offenses in the league, while the Packers are riding a “run-the-table” wave of consistency. The winner of this game could very well be representing the NFC in Super Bowl LI in Houston.
