Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XIX

For the first time in Super Bowl history, an essential home-game for one team as the Road to 2019 Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta continues with Super Bowl XIX between the NFC-champion San Francisco 49ers and AFC-champion Miami Dolphins.

Montana Meets Marino

Played at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California in 1985, Super Bowl XIX between the 49ers and Dolphins was an essential home game for San Francisco, as nearly 85,000 fans strong would pack the stands. In dominating fashion, the 49ers would capture yet another title, defeating the Dolphins 38-16.

Leading up to Super Bowl XIX, the hype surrounded mainly two players; the quarterbacks. What would go on to be two Hall of Famers going head-to-head, the 49ers’ Joe Montana would face off against the Dolphins’ Dan Marino, the first time facing one another in the big game. Each would throw for more than 300 yards, but it was Montana would go on to get the best of Marino.

Super Bowl XIX was the first time the big game was broadcast on ABC, and President Ronald Reagan became the first sitting president to participate in pre-game ceremonies, conducting the coin toss, which would take part in a televised event directly from the White House. The cost for a commercial during Super Bowl XIX sharply increased to a whopping $525,000 for 30 seconds of air time, with more than 85.53 million viewers watching the big game.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XVII

As we continue on the Road to the 2019 Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta entering Week 4 of the 2018 NFL season, we’re looking back at Super Bowl XVII between two historic franchises, the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins.

Rushing to Record-Setting Super Bowl

Played in front of over 100,000 fans strong at the famed Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, the Washington Redskins would show up and show out, capturing their first Super Bowl victory in 1983. A then-Super Bowl record, the Redskins would post 263 rushing yards in Super Bowl XVII, paving the way for running back John Riggins to walk away as the Super Bowl MVP.

Riggins would set not one but two Super Bowl records in 1983, both in rushing attempts (38) and yards rushing (166), also carrying the ball for one touchdown.

Once again, unsurprisingly, the cost of a commercial rose in 1983, rising to $400,000 for a 30-second TV spot. Over 81 million fans worldwide tuned in to catch Super Bowl XVII, with the big game’s popularity at an all-time high. The National Anthem was sung by Leslie Easterbrook, and the halftime show included Bob Jani Productions presents “KaleidoSUPERscope” with the Los Angeles Super Drill Team.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl VIII

Continuing their run of dominance in the league, the Miami Dolphins would make their third-straight Super Bowl appearance in 1974, this time facing off against the 2017 NFC runner-up Minnesota Vikings.

Dolphin Domination

Playing in their third-straight Super Bowl appearance against a third-different opponent, the Miami Dolphins would go on to capture their second-straight Super Bowl victory, a 24-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Although not undefeated like their previous season, the Dolphins would become just the second repeat Super Bowl champions in just eight total tries, matching the famed Green Bay Packers with two Super Bowl victories.

Super Bowl VIII was also the first to not be hosted by big cities such as New Orleans, Miami or Los Angeles in the modern era. Instead, the game was played at Rice University’s football stadium in Houston, Texas, their first of what would become three hosted Super Bowls, most recently in 2017 at Super Bowl LI. Larry Csonka, running back for the Miami Dolphins, would become the first running back in league history to be named Super Bowl MVP, rushing for 145 yards on 33 carries for the team.

Pat Summerall would once again handle the broadcasting duties for the Super Bowl, alongside Ray Scott and Bart Starr. The cost of a 30-second commercial rose nearly $15,000 in 1973, up to $103,000. At halftime, fans got a “taste of Texas” when the Westchester Wranglerettes performed alongside the University of Texas Longhorn Marching Band.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl VII

An incredible feat, yet-to-be-matched in Super Bowls since, culminated with the Miami Dolphins ending their perfect season with a Super Bowl VII victory over the Washington Redskins. We’re taking it back to the 1972-73 NFL season on the Road to Super Bowl 2019 in Atlanta.

Pursuit of Perfection

Played on January 14, 1973, in front of over 90,000 fans strong at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California, host of Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the Miami Dolphins would capture the NFL’s first (and to this day only) perfect season, rounding it out with a 14-7 victory over the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII.

After losing to the Dallas Cowboys the previous season in Super Bowl VI, the team came back with a vengeance during their perfect run, capturing their first ever Super Bowl victory in 1973. Super Bowl MVP would go on to be awarded to safety Jake Scott, just the second defensive player in NFL history to earn MVP honors. Super Bowl VII was quite the defensive battle, to this date still being the lowest scoring game in Super Bowl history.

When the Super Bowl began airing on television, commercial air time was quite expensive, though it’s nothing compared to what it costs today. A 30-second spot on TV in 1973 was around $88,000. However, that’s chump change compared to what brands are paying in today’s day and age, well into the millions. The halftime show for Super Bowl VII consisted of another marching band act, this time Woody Herman and the University of Michigan marching band.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl VI

Looking to rebound after a disappointing 2017 campaign, the Dallas Cowboys were second-straight Super Bowl contenders in the 1971-72 season, facing off against the formidable Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI.

Dallas Dominates

Heading back to the “Big Easy,” the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins would square off in front of over 81,000 fans for Super Bowl VI at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Super Bowl VI performance for the Cowboys was one of the more dominant to-date, capturing a 24-3 victory over the Dolphins.

The Cowboys had quite an interesting road prior to heading into Super Bowl VI. There were fans and analysts alike who did not expect the Cowboys to have a fighting chance in this game, let alone a chance to win. A lot of this came from Dallas’ Super Bowl V sloppy loss to the Baltimore Colts. However, the Cowboys more than dominated Super Bowl VI and continued to set record after record.

To this day, the 1971-72 Dallas Cowboys team remains as the only team to prevent their opponents from scoring a touchdown during the Super Bowl. The MVP of Super Bowl VI was none other than Roger Staubach, quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, who completed 12 of his 19 pass attempts for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

The halftime show for Super Bowl VI was a salute to Louis Armstrong, performed by Carol Channing and Ella Fitzgerald, who were accompanied by the U.S. Marine Corps Drill team.

Road to Super Bowl 53: AFC East Preview

Previewing every division in the NFL ahead of the ‘Road to Super Bowl 53’ in Atlanta, Georgia. Next up; the AFC East.

New England Patriots

2017 Record: 13-3, AFC Champions

Not surprisingly, the New England Patriots were the AFC East and AFC champions in 2017, coming up short to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

An offseason of change is sweeping over New England, amidst rumors of tension, trades and retirements. Wide receivers Brandin Cooks (traded to Los Angeles Rams) and Danny Amendola (signed with Miami Dolphins), as well as running back Dion Lewis (signed with Tennessee Titans) are gone, leaving quarterback Tom Brady with plenty of new faces on offense. Alongside first round draft pick running back Sony Michel out of the University of Georgia,  wide receiver Jordan Matthews and running backs Jeremy Hill and Rex Burkhead will look to be a featured faces on the offense.

Buffalo Bills

2017 Record: 9-7

A team that finished ahead of their expectations in 2017, the Buffalo Bills themselves featured an offseason of change. The team traded quarterback Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns, instead opting to draft the young-and-talented quarterback Josh Allen out of Wyoming.

On the defensive side of the ball, a relatively stingy defense got even better with the addition of players like defensive back Vontae Davis and defensive tackle Star Lotulelei.

Miami Dolphins

2017 Record: 6-10

After a disappointing 2017 campaign that say quarterback Ryan Tannehill sitting out due to injury, a temporary solution in former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and the mid-season trade of running back Jay Ajayi to the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, the Dolphins are looking to start over in 2018.

The Dolphins have been active on both the trade and free agency markets in the 2018 offseason, most notably trading for former Rams defensive end Robert Quinn, former Lions linebacker Akeem Spence, and signing the likes of wide receiver Danny Amendola away from the division-rival Patriots, hoping to give their defense the talent it lacks while giving a hopefully-healthy Tannehill some offensive weapons.

New York Jets

2017 Record: 5-11

Despite a 5-11 campaign in the 2017 NFL season, the New York Jets were actually one of the surprises, finishing with more wins than many expected. That didn’t stop the team, however, from undergoing a complete makeover in the offseason.

The Jets not only signed quarterback Josh McCown to a one-year extension, the team also opted to draft former USC quarterback Sam Darnold and sign former Minnesota Viking Teddy Bridgewater. Aside from the QB position, the Jets brought in plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, re-signing wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, bringing in former Redskins and Browns WR Terrelle Pryor, former Browns running back Isaiah Crowell, and plenty of other key positional players.

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 11-15

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 11-15.

#11: Miami Dolphins

CBS Sports, Bleacher Report: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia | NFL.com: Vita Vea, DT, Washington

“The Dolphins have been showing interest in Smith, one of the draft’s top linebackers. He’d be the long-term stud the team needs next to Raekwon McMillan, and the Dolphins could make him the immediate starter at WILL and look to trade Kiko Alonso to another team where he’d be a better fit. They can also think about getting out from Alonso’s deal next offseason if nothing else.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#12: Buffalo Bills

CBS Sports (traded to Cleveland Browns): Vita Vea, DT, Washington | Bleacher Report (traded to Indianapolis Colts): Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA | NFL.com: Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming

“After trading back, again, the Indianapolis Colts will gain pick Nos. 12, 22 and 96 in this hypothetical deal with the Buffalo Bills in exchange for the No. 6 spot.At No. 12, Ballard and Co. still get a top-notch player who fills a huge need. Marcus Davenport is raw, coming from tiny Texas-San Antonio. But he showed during the season, at the Senior Bowl and the combine that he’s the type of athletic rarity who can make the needed improvements to make an early NFL impact.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#13: Washington Redskins

CBS Sports: Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia | Bleacher Report: Vita Vea, DT, Washington | NFL.com: Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia

“Nothing wrong with more speed being added on defense, and Smith fits the bill. He’s often favorably compared to Atlanta MLB Deion Jones due to his build, and ability to play FAST.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#14: Green Bay Packers

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA | Bleacher Report: Josh Jackson, DB, Iowa

“An offseason of change has the Green Bay Packers looking like a new team heading into the draft. But that new team still has holes to fill at pass-rusher, wide receiver and cornerback.Iowa’s Josh Jackson didn’t help his cause with a 4.56-second 40-yard-dash at the combine, but his play shows a cornerback with ball skills, technique and toughness. He’s a natural fit in defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s scheme, and he and Kevin King give them one heck of a young cornerback duo.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#15: Arizona Cardinals

CBS Sports: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville | Bleacher Report: Mike Hughes, DB, UCF | NFL.com: Connor Williams, G, Texas

“Jackson isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the Cardinalshave an offensive coordinator in Mike McCoy who can build the offense to the dynamic prospect’s strengths. Jackson isn’t ever going to be the best passer in the league, but good luck defending a running game that features David Johnson and the threat of the QB running at any time. The Cardinals would ideally trade up for one of the top four QBs, but with so many holes on the roster, they can’t afford to sacrifice picks.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports
