2019 NFL Draft: Winners & Losers

Every team got better after the 2019 NFL Draft—or at least, that’s what every general manager, head coach and owner believes. But what teams truly may have helped their chances on the quest for a Super Bowl?

Indianapolis Colts: A — Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN

“How about the job Chris Ballard has done as general manager of the Colts? He absolutely crushed the 2018 draft, finding stars and helping catapult Indy to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth after going 4-12 in 2017. This roster has a ton of young talent. Ballard also landed an extra second-rounder from the Jets in the Sam Darnold trade last year, and that pick ended up at the very top of Round 2 in 2019. That’s good team-building, and the Colts had some very specific needs to fill this weekend. How did Ballard do? I love this class from top to bottom.

Ballard moved out of Round 1, picking up an extra 2020 second-rounder in going from No. 26 to No. 46, which meant Indy had three second-round picks. And I really liked all four of Indy’s Day 2 picks. I was surprised that cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (No. 34) made it out of the first round, but only one corner went in the first 32 picks. He is a little raw, but I think he’ll start immediately. Wide receiver Parris Campbell (No. 59) is a burner, but he also caught 90 passes last season and improved every year. He’ll play some slot and also scorch corners out wide. Bobby Okereke (No. 89) was my fourth-ranked inside linebacker, and he could compete with Anthony Walker for that starting spot. Defensive end Ben Banogu(No. 49) is a really good fit in Matt Eberflus’ 4-3 scheme.

That’s all three needs filled on Day 2. There were also some intriguing additions on Day 3, particularly in safety Khari Willis (No. 109), who I ranked as my No. 50 overall prospect. He broke up 10 passes last season and will be an impact special-teams contributor. Safety Marvell Tell III (No. 144) is a good athlete with a 6-foot-2 frame. Javon Patterson (No. 246) made 39 college starts at guard but will likely move to center.

Ballard & Co. have done it again. This is my favorite draft class.”

Cincinnati Bengals: A- — Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN

“It’s tough to know what to think about the Bengals in 2019. While longtime coach Marvin Lewis is gone and Zac Taylor is now in charge, Mike Brown still runs things. That means the team is going to build through the draft and not worry much about free agency. In fact, Cincinnati didn’t make many notable moves, other than parting ways with Vontaze Burfict and re-signing its own guys. After a 6-10 finish last season, is this team better?

This is not a sexy class, but it’s solid throughout. Jonah Williams (No. 11) is a no-brainer immediate starter, either at guard or tackle. Germaine Pratt (No. 72) is a converted safety who will likely end up at outside linebacker in Cincy’s 4-3. The versatility makes it good value. I didn’t love Ryan Finley‘s tape as much as Todd McShay — he gave Finley a second-round grade — but Andy Daltonshouldn’t be locked in long term, so this is another option for Taylor if Dalton underwhelms. To get Finley at No. 104 is solid.

Drew Sample (No. 52) is a really good blocking tight end, but even he didn’t expect to go in the second round. That was high with more complete tight ends available. Renell Wren (No. 125) had an up-and-down career for the Sun Devils, but he impressed at the Senior Bowl and has some intriguing athletic traits. I’m intrigued by the Day 3 running backs with Trayveon Williams (No. 182) and Rodney Anderson (No. 211). Anderson is one of the most talented backs in the class, but he simply couldn’t stay on the field. Williams is going to help spell Joe Mixon in the receiving game. Jordan Brown (No. 223) is a good corner for the seventh round.

Williams and Sample are the only surefire early starters, but there’s some upside with Finley and the Day 3 running backs. This group will help Taylor navigate his first year on the job.”

Other Winners

Buffalo Bills — Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated

“Sometimes you play the board, sometimes the board plays you, and sometimes the board drops your way and you don’t have to do much of anything at all. While Ed Oliver wasn’t going to fit in every defense, he fits perfectly in Buffalo. The fact that versatile offensive lineman Cody Ford was available in the second was simply kismet. While drafting a receiver would have placed a cherry on top of the sundae, this is a draft good for both coach and quarterback.”

Denver Broncos — Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated

“We tend to over-praise when a team’s board aligns with its biggest needs, but I didn’t think there was a way John Elway could have played the first round better. Joe Flacco adores athletic tight ends who can get open in intermediate space, then he gets a quality starter in round two with Dalton Risner and Drew Lock, who has much less pressure than previous Elway draft picks.”

Kyler Murray — Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated

“There’s a good chance he knew about this, otherwise why make the leap with such assurance? Either way, Murray goes from a Double-A bus to nowhere, to assured 40-man roster, to No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. I don’t think there are many players who would continually challenge the draft industrial complex in two sports like Murray did and still come out ahead.”

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XVI

Two teams looking to rebound on the Road to 2019 Super Bowl in Atlanta after disappointing seasons in 2017, the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers showed down in Super Bowl XVI in 1982.

Montana Leads 49ers to Victory

The San Francisco 49ers would capture the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XVI, defeating the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 26-21. Over 81,000 were in attendance for the 16th installment of the Super Bowl, this time being played at the Pontiac Silverdome, in Pontiac, Michigan.

Trailing 26-14, the Bengals would score a touchdown in the waning seconds of Super Bowl XVI to make it 26-21, but would fail to recover an onside kick, leading San Francisco to the victory. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana would take home Super Bowl MVP honors, completing 14 of his 22 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown, while also recording a touchdown on the ground.

The cost of a 30-second TV commercial rose once again in 1982, up to $324,000, the most expensive to date. Pat Summerall and John Madden handled broadcasting duties for Super Bowl XVI, which brought in a record 85.24 million viewers worldwide.

It seemed as though the group “Up with People” was starting to make a themselves regulars at the Super Bowl. The halftime show for Super Bowl XVI was Up with People presents “Salute to the 1960s and Motown.” Pat Haggerty was the referee for this Super Bowl and the future hall of famers recorded were Bill Walsh (coach), Fred DeanRonnie LottJoe Montana.

Colts VIP Update: Week 1 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The 2018 Indianapolis Colts and Colts VIP Tailgating season are officially underway! On Sunday, after the first official Colts VIP Tailgate presented by Hays + Sons of the season, the boys in blue were back where they belong at Lucas Oil Stadium, facing off against the I-74 neighbor Cincinnati Bengals.

Luck Back in Action

A sight for sore Colts fans’ eyes on Sunday, quarterback Andrew Luck was back in action for his first regular season game since the 2016-17 NFL season, and Luck did not disappoint.

Despite an early red zone interception, Luck seemed to settle in and had no trouble sharing his passes throughout the Colts offense.

Luck finished the game with a career-high 39 completions on 53 attempts, for 319 yards, two touchdowns and the lone interception.

A Familiar Result

Despite looking solid on offense in the first half, and the defense holding Andy Dalton, A.J. Green and the at-times explosive Bengals offense at bay, it seemed to be a tale of two halves for the Colts.

After jumping out to a 23-10 lead, the Bengals would end the game scoring 24 unanswered points, including an 83-yard scoop-and-score off a Jack Doyle fumble on a late Colts drive to seal the game, resulting in the Bengals walking away with a 34-23 victory.

However, for Colts fans, although a familiar result, the team remained positive following the game, with head coach Frank Reich and quarterback Andrew Luck maintaining that while a disappointing result, the team walked away with plenty of positives.

Looking Forward

The Colts hit the road for their first away game of the 2018 season, heading to FedEx Field to face the 1-0 Washington Redskins.

Road to Super Bowl 53: AFC North Preview

With teams beginning to report for mandatory organized team activities (OTA’s), we get closer to kicking off the Road to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta. Taking a quick look at how the AFC North stacks up compared to 2017, and which teams might surprise in 2018.

Pittsburgh Steelers

2017 Record: 13-3, AFC North Champions

A relatively quiet offseason for the Steelers in 2018 was headlined by the expected news of the return of quarterback Ben Roethlishberger,  but the future remains unclear for the team. With the core of Roethlisberger, wide receiver Antonio Brown and a disgruntled running back Le’Veon Bell still on the roster, the team still boasts the potential for an explosive offense. But losing wide receiver Martavis Bryant and a trio of defensive backs in Mike Mitchell, William Gay and Robert Golden leaves the team’s defensive identity and subsequent success hanging in the balance.

Baltimore Ravens

2017 Record: 9-7

An offseason of turnover for the Baltimore Ravens, headlined by an unclear direction for the team’s quarterback position, leaves fans wondering what the team might look like heading into the 2018 regular season. The Ravens have Joe Flacco, a Super Bowl winning quarterback, currently as their starter. However, that didn’t stop the team’s front office from both only signing Robert Griffin III this offseason, but trading into the first round to grab Louisville’s Lamar Jackson as well.

The team’s receiving corps also sports a new look, with 2017 wide receivers Mike Wallace, Jeremy Maclin and Chris Matthews being replaced by Michael Crabtree (OAK), Willie Snead (NO) and John Brown (AZ).

Cincinnati Bengals

2017 Record: 7-9

The trend of a relatively quiet offseason in the AFC North continues in Cincinnati, where the team didn’t make many moves to improve or hurt their depth chart. The team’s biggest transactions this offseason came in the form of signing tight end Tyler Effect to a one-year contract extension and trading for Buffalo Bills offensive tackle Cordy Glenn, adding some much needed depth on the front lines following the loss of offensive linemen Eric Winston, Russell Bodine and Andre Smith.

Cleveland Browns

2017 Record: 0-16

Arguably the team with the biggest makeover of the 2018 NFL offseason, the Cleveland Browns have (rightly so) completely revamped their roster. Holding the #1 and #4 overall picks in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Browns were able to grab two players they believe can be the cornerstones of a turnaround in quarterback Baker Mayfield and defensive back Denzel Ward, pairing the two first-round picks with the 2017 #1 overall pick Myles Garrett. But it wasn’t just the draft where the Browns looked to improve.

The team was also incredible active on the trade and free agency markets before the draft, acquiring Pro Bowl wide receiver Jarvis Landry from the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Tyrod Taylor from the Buffalo Bills and defensive back Damarious Randall from the Green Bay Packers. The team was also able to bring in former 49ers running back Carlos Hyde, defensive back E.J. Gaines and defensive end Chris Smith through free agency.

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 21-25

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 21-25.

#21: Cincinnati Bengals

CBS Sports: Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame | Bleacher Report: James Daniels, OL, Iowa | NFL.com: Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina

“The Bengals took a step toward addressing their offensive line woes by acquiring left tackle Cordy Glenn from the Bills and moving down to this pick. They should keep adding talent to the position with McGlinchey, who is a fit at either tackle spot. He’ll slot in at right tackle initially but could move to the left side if Glenn can’t stay healthy. Either way, drafting the Notre Dame standout puts the Bengals halfway to fixing their line issues.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#22: Buffalo Bills

CBS Sports: Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU | Bleacher Report (traded to Indianapolis Colts): Derrius Guice, RB, LSU | NFL.com: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida

“As part of the predicted trade for pick No. 6 overall, the Indianapolis Colts add this selection and get the workhorse running back they can plug in right behind Andrew Luck in Week 1.One of my philosophies is that a good running back makes the quarterback’s life easier, and that’s exactly what the physical, punishing, mean Guice would be as Luck gets back onto the field this season. The best way to take pressure off Luck is to give him a bell-cow back.” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#23: Los Angeles Rams

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama | Bleacher Report: Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State

“The trade of Alec Ogletree to the Giants opens a spot for this gifted LB. Like so many of recent vintage from ‘Bama, Evans runs well, and is well-versed in pro-style scheme, and reasoning. Plus, he makes an impact as soon as he arrives.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#24: Carolina Panthers

CBS Sports: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama | Bleacher Report, NFL.com: Jaire Alexander, DB, Louisville

“The first order of business for returning general manager Marty Hurney in this draft should be fixing the mess his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, left at cornerback. Even considering how badly the team needs upgrades on the offensive line and at wide receiver, the secondary should get a look first.Louisville’s Jaire Alexander might not fit the size profile for some teams at 5’10 ¼” and 196 pounds, and he was banged up in 2017 with hand and leg injuries, but he’s a physical player at the line of scrimmage and in coverage. Alexander can match up with taller receivers thanks to his speed and instincts. His tool set would make him the Panthers’ best cornerback right away.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#25: Tennessee Titans

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Harold Landry, LB, Boston College | Bleacher Report: Sam Hubbard, EDGE, Ohio State

“Landry is an athletic freak as an edge rusher, but he’ll likely be better served not playing a large role as a rookie while he adjusts to the NFL and potentially bulks up. That should be just fine for the Titans, who will have a huge need at edge rusher next offseason with Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan slated to reach free agency. Landry can be a subpackage player in Year 1 and eventually take over one of those starting spots in 2019.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: @ Cincinnati Bengals

As the Indianapolis Colts were coming off one of the worst defeats in recent history in Week 7, the team took a short drive down I-74 in hopes of setting their road to the 2017 NFL Playoffs back on track against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Better.. But No Dice

After a 27-0 shutout at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7, the Indianapolis Colts traveled to Cincinnati on Sunday to look to right the ship. And as close as the team would come, another 4th quarter loss would ultimately doom the Colts to fall to a 2-6 start, their worst since the 2011 season.

Leading 23-17 late in the game, quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who finished the day with 233 yards and two touchdowns, threw his one interception, leading to a pick-six for the Bengals, a 24-23 victory that would ultimately seal the team’s fate.

Jack’s Back

Despite a decent outing from Brissett, it was tight end Jack Doyle who shined in Week 8, finishing the game with 12 receptions for 121 yards and one touchdown.

Looking Forward

The Colts will hit the road again, traveling to Houston in Week 9 to take on the Texans, before coming home to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Indianapolis Colts Season Preview: Weeks 5-8

While teams are quietly hard at work preparing for the 2017 NFL season, we’re taking a look at the full schedule, game-by-game, for the Indianapolis Colts. Next up: weeks 5-8.

Week 5: San Francisco 49ers @ Indianapolis Colts – Oct. 8, 1 p.m. ET (FOX)

One of the most highly anticipated games for Indianapolis Colts fans this season will be their Week 5 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers; however, the excitement isn’t building around the game. Colts owner Jim Irsay announced that the team will unveil a statue on Saturday, October 7, the day before the matchup. At halftime of the team’s game against the 49ers, the Colts will hold a jersey retirement ceremony for the future Hall of Fame quarterback, a special weekend fans truly won’t want to miss.

Week 6: Indianapolis Colts @ Tennessee Titans– Oct. 16 (Monday), 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

With plenty of new offensive weapons and a much more experienced team, the Tennessee Titans, after a 9-7 campaign in 2016 that saw them narrowly finishing 2nd in the AFC South to the Houston Texans, will play host to the Colts in the team’s first (and only) Monday Night Football game of the year on ESPN. Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, coming off of a torn ACL in 2016, looks to continue to build off of impressive rookie and sophomore campaigns for the team. The Colts’ newly revamped defense will face an offensive attack that could truly test the durability of the core. This will be the first of two matchups for these two teams, with the second coming in Week 12.

Week 7: Jacksonville Jaguars @ Indianapolis Colts – Oct. 22, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)

Despite finishing 3-13 and dead last in the AFC South in the 2016-17 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are a team that always seems to cause problems for the Indianapolis Colts. With a new head coach in Doug Marrone and former coach Tom Coughlin returning as the team’s new executive vice president of football operations, the Jaguars are touting a new “culture” surrounding the team. This will be the first of two matchups for these two teams, with the second coming in Week 13.

Week 8: Indianapolis Colts @ Cincinnati Bengals – Oct. 29, 1 p.m. ET (CBS)

Always facing each other in the NFL’s preseason, this time the Colts and Cincinnati Bengals will square off in the regulars season at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, OH. Just a short drive down I-75, the Colts will hope to contain the offensive duo of Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton and wide receiver A.J. Green, two of the best in the game to date. Despite a shaky defense and a 6-9-1 record in 2016, the Bengals will prove to be one of the Colts’ tougher opponents of the 2017 season as both teams are looking to get back to the NFL playoffs.

Tickets for the 2017 Indianapolis Colts VIP Tailgates are officially available! With a new general manager and a re-shaped roster, the Colts look to start anew after their disappointing 2016 campaign. Get your 2017 Colts VIP Tailgate tickets today
