Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl 50

After this weekend’s 2019 NFL Divisional games, we’ll officially have our final four on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami! Two teams on the outside-looking-in, the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos, headline our latest in the countdown, with a Super Bowl 50 matchup in California.

‘The Sheriff’ Leaves a Champion

The Denver Broncos walked away Super Bowl 50 champions, 24-10 winners over the Carolina Panthers. And after a season that saw turmoil following injury, former Indianapolis Colt Peyton Manning walked away with his second Super Bowl victory in what would ultimately be his final game of his career.

“All I know is, I’m going to go out tonight and drink a lot of beer…drink a lot of Budweiser,” Manning said to CBS Sports analyst Jim Nantz when asked about pondering retirement.

Despite being Manning’s final game as a player, it was the Broncos defense that stepped up and dominated the game. Broncos linebacker Von Miller, who would go on to be named Super Bowl 50 MVP, recorded six tackles, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble, which ended up leading to the game-clinching touchdown for the Broncos.

Carolina Panthers quarterback and league MVP Cam Newton, who had been phenomenal all season, struggled in Super Bowl 50, garnering only 265 yards and one interception on 18-of-41 passing. Newton was hurried over 20 times in the game, being hit 10 times and sacked 7 times.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XLVIII

With the NFL’s regular season coming to an end this weekend, the playoffs are almost officially set, and we’re one step closer to Super Bowl 54 in Miami. Heading back to 2014, the now Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos would square off against Russell Wilson’s Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Legion of Boom

In the first of quarterback Peyton Manning’s two Super Bowl visits post-Indianapolis Colts, the Denver Broncos took on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Despite being an outdoor Super Bowl in a cold-weather city, there were nearly 83,000 fans in attendance for the big game!

Seahawks linebacker Malcom Smith would break the streak of quarterback MVP’s, earning Super Bowl XLVIII honors with a strong performance. Smith finished the game with nine tackles, a recovered fumble and an interception returned 69 yards for a touchdown.

Super Bowl XLVIII went down in the record books as the largest-watched event in the history of television, broadcast on FOX to over 167 million viewers. Announcers Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Pam Oliver and Erin Andrews would handle broadcasting duties, and the cost of a 30-second spot would jump to $4 million. Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be cast for Super Bowl halftime duties in 2014.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XXII

Two teams looking to rebound on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami, the two-time AFC champion Denver Broncos made their second-straight Super Bowl appearance in 1988, squaring off against the NFC-champion Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII.

Washington’s Moment

Played on January 31, 1988 in front of over 73,000 fans at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, California, the Washington Redskins would become the second-straight NFC champion to defeat the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl, capturing Super Bowl XXII by a score of 42-10.

This was the Redskins’ fourth Super Bowl appearances in the first 22 years. Despite entering the 1987-88 season as the Redskins backup quarterback, Doug Williams would go on to take Super Bowl MVP honors, completing 18 of his 29 attempts for a record 340 yards and four touchdowns. The Redskins scored 35 of their then-record 42 points in just the second quarter alone, an impressive feat.

The cost of a 30-second commercial in 1988 rose to $645,000 with Super Bowl XXI. The big game was broadcast to over 80 million fans around the world on ABC, with announcers Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf on the call. Halftime included Chubby Checker and The Rockettes, which made for a very interesting show, and the National Anthem was sung by Herb Alpert.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XXI

With week 3 on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami officially underway, we’re taking it back to Super Bowl XXI from sunny southern California, a matchup between the New York Giants and Denver Broncos.

Simms Leads Giants to Super Bowl Title

Played in front of over 100,000 fans for the first time in Super Bowl history, the New York Giants would score a then-record 30 points in the second half of Super Bowl XXI, eventually leading ‘Big Blue’ to a 39-20 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Giants quarterback Phil Simms would put on one of the better Super Bowl performances for a QB to date in 1987, scrambling for three touchdowns in Super Bowl XXI, an effort that would lead the Giants to their first Super Bowl victory and MVP honors for Simms.

Super Bowl XXI was broadcast on CBS in 1987, with a total of 87.2 million fans tuning in. The cost of a 30-second commercial continued to rise, now up to $600,000, with announcers Pat Summerall and John Madden both handling broadcasting duties. The National Anthem for Super Bowl XXI was sung by Willie Davis, and the halftime show was a “Salute to Hollywood’s 100th Anniversary,” featuring the Southern California high school drill team and dancers.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XII

Two teams looking to bounce back after disappointing campaigns in 2018, the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys had reached the pinnacle in 1978, facing off in Super Bowl XII from the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“America’s Team” Wins Super Bowl XII

In a game played once again from New Orleans in front of early 76,000 fans, the Dallas Cowboys, dubbed “America’s Team,” would walk away victorious after a 27-10 matchup against the Denver Broncos.

Putting together a complete game in Super Bowl XII, the Cowboys defense would be vital to their victory. Dallas would go on to force eight  turnovers and only allowed eight pass completions for Denver throughout the entirety of the game. Cowboys wide receiver Butch Johnson would provide the highlight reel, most notably reeling in a 45-yard touchdown diving into the end zone.

Dallas’ defensive stars, linemen Randy White and Harvey Martin, would go on to be named Super Bowl co-MVPs, the first (and so far, only) time that two players would share Super Bowl MVP honors.

The cost of a 30 second television commercial during Super Bowl XII went up to $162,000, still paling in comparison to the Super Bowl LI’s rates. Pat Summerall would once again be the game announcer on CBS, hosting alongside analyst Tom Brookshier. At halftime, Super Bowl fans were treated to plenty of entertainment, including musicians Pete Fountain and Al Hirt.

Colts v. Broncos: You’ll Want Colts Tickets for this Game

It’s the game to determine whether or not Andrew Luck, will ever be able to beat the great Peyton Manning. Given Manning’s age, this might be the last time Peyton enters Lucas Oil Stadium. It would be fitting to watch the next dynasty monument, Andrew Luck, beat Peyton. It should be a metaphorical passing of the torch. Right? Indianapolis Colts vs. Denver Broncos. It’s gonna be tough.

Peyton Manning meeting Andrew Luck

Broncos Coach Gary Kubiak is trying out his new offense. He’s diversifying the plays to take some pressure off Peyton. So, there’s a bit more focus on the run, led by the always improving RB, CJ Anderson. That run is supposed to be quick drives and a fast push down the field. This move toward a run game could spell trouble for the Colts, who occasionally, only every once in a while, have no ability to stop a run game.

The Broncos are good overall again this year, especially their defense, which means they’ll make it to the playoffs. So, Kubiak’s playing this smart. Taking the pressure off his veteran players means they’ll have a little something left come postseason.

The Broncos are still good because they’re lead by one of the best quarterbacks to play the game, even if he’s old and having a bad year. And they’re balanced, ranking second in passing yards allowed. Kubiak is taking a chance on three new guys on the o-line, who combine for a grand total of zero NFL starts. Ty Sambrailo, Max Garcia, and Matt Paradis. Fostering new talent is the way to build a team, but rookies are always a bit more fun to watch.

Peyton, will always be an Indianapolis Colt. He’ll be back to play in the house he built, maybe for the last time. Colts fans will always be partial to the man who made the Colts. It’s a big game to watch. Peyton and co. will be back at Lucas Oil Stadium for week nine in downtown Indianapolis on November 8th. Game starts at 4:25 p.m. Broadcast on CBS. Our VIP Tailgate starts at 1:00 p.m. You’ll want to go to this one. Tickets to the Colts vs. Bronocs game are also still available.
