Road to Miami: Super Bowl 54 Playoff Picture

The 2019 NFL regular season is officially coming to an end, which means it’s almost time for the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami to officially begin. With all 32 teams in action for the final time in Week 17, there are still plenty of seeding question marks left to be answered. A quick look at the 2019 playoff picture heading into the final week of the regular season.

AFC

All of the AFC’s divisional winners are officially set on the road to Super Bowl 54, but the final wild card spot is still up for grabs — with the Tennessee Titans, Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers all still in the hunt.

Tennessee can clinch a playoff berth with:

1.) TEN win OR
2.) TEN tie + PIT loss or tie OR
3.) PIT loss + IND loss or tie

Oakland can clinch a playoff berth with:

1.) OAK win + PIT loss + TEN loss + IND win + OAK clinches strength-of-victory tiebreaker over PIT*
*OAK can clinch strength-of-victory tiebreaker over PIT if ONE of the following teams win or tie: CHI, DET, LAC OR NE

Pittsburgh can clinch a playoff berth with:

1.) PIT win + TEN loss or tie OR
2.) PIT tie + TEN loss OR
3.) TEN loss + IND win + OAK loss or tie OR

NFC

All of the NFC’s playoff spots have been solidified, with, like the AFC, the seeding left in play for Week 17. The final dominoes, however, are the NFC East and West.

The Philadelphia Eagles control their own destiny — win on Sunday against the Giants, and they’re secured on the path to the Super Bowl. However, a loss opens the door for the rival Dallas Cowboys, who can secure the final playoff spot with a win and a Philadelphia loss.

There are also a handful of teams still in the hunt for a first-round bye, including the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers.

Green Bay can clinch a first-round bye with:

1.) GB win OR
2.) NO loss OR
3.) GB tie + SF loss OR
4.) GB tie + NO tie

New Orleans can clinch a first-round bye with:

1.) NO win + GB loss or tie OR
2.) NO win + SF loss or tie OR
3.) NO tie + GB loss OR

NFL Division Preview: AFC North

Though historically one of the the stronger divisions in the NFL, the AFC North experienced somewhat of a down year in 2015. We take a look at the AFC North’s path to Super Bowl 51 in Houston.

DivisionPreview (1)

Last Year (2015): Cincinnati Bengals (12-4), Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6), Baltimore Ravens (5-11), Cleveland Browns (3-13)

The Cincinnati Bengals saw one of their best seasons in nearly a decade in 2015, yet continued to show their playoff woes. Following quarterback Andy Dalton’s broken thumb, Cincy was relegated to rely on QB A.J. McCarron, who struggled mightily in the playoffs.

The Steelers, who were hot and cold throughout the season, made it into the playoffs before losing to the New England Patriots in the divisional round. The team returns its core of Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown on offense, regaining the services of running back Le’Veon Bell following a knee injury in 2015.

The Baltimore Ravens are still reeling from their 2015 campaign, which saw a devastating knee injury sustained to QB Joe Flacco in the closing weeks of the season. Flacco plans to be ready to play at the beginning of the season, at what form or level remains to be seen.

And the Cleveland Browns. Well, they were the Cleveland Browns in 2015. The team is hoping to utilize the services of quarterback and former #2 pick Robert Griffin III, following the release of Johnny Manziel. The team, with new head coach Hue Jackson, looks to try and end the “Cleveland curse,” but still remains quite a mess.

Prediction: The Bengals will continue to rule the roost, in close contention with the Steelers. The drop from #2 to #3 in the division is a cliff.
