Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XVII

As we continue on the Road to the 2020 Super Bowl LIV in Miami, we’re looking back at Super Bowl XVII between two historic franchises, the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins.

A Record-Setting Super Bowl

Played in front of over 100,000 fans strong at the famed Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, the Washington Redskins would show up and show out, capturing their first Super Bowl victory in 1983. A then-Super Bowl record, the Redskins would post 263 rushing yards in Super Bowl XVII, paving the way for running back John Riggins to walk away as the Super Bowl MVP.

Riggins would set not one but two Super Bowl records in 1983, both in rushing attempts (38) and yards rushing (166), also carrying the ball for one touchdown.

Once again, unsurprisingly, the cost of a commercial rose in 1983, rising to $400,000 for a 30-second TV spot. Over 81 million fans worldwide tuned in to catch Super Bowl XVII, with the big game’s popularity at an all-time high. The National Anthem was sung by Leslie Easterbrook, and the halftime show included Bob Jani Productions presents “KaleidoSUPERscope” with the Los Angeles Super Drill Team.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XVI

Two teams looking to rebound on the Road to the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami after disappointing seasons yet again in 2018, the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers showed down in Super Bowl XVI in 1982.

Montana Wins Super Bowl XVI MVP

The San Francisco 49ers would capture the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XVI, defeating the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 26-21. Over 81,000 were in attendance for the 16th edition of the Super Bowl, this time being played at the Pontiac Silverdome, in Pontiac, Michigan.

Trailing 26-14, the Bengals would score a touchdown in the waning seconds of Super Bowl XVI to make it 26-21, but would fail to recover an onside kick, leading San Francisco to the victory. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana would take home Super Bowl MVP honors, completing 14 of his 22 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown, while also recording a touchdown on the ground.

The cost of a 30-second TV commercial rose once again in 1982, up to $324,000, the most expensive to date. Pat Summerall and John Madden handled broadcasting duties for Super Bowl XVI, which brought in a record 85.24 million viewers worldwide.

It seemed as though the group “Up with People” was starting to make a themselves regulars at the Super Bowl. The halftime show for Super Bowl XVI was Up with People presents “Salute to the 1960s and Motown.” Pat Haggerty was the referee for this Super Bowl and the future hall of famers recorded were Bill Walsh (coach), Fred DeanRonnie LottJoe Montana.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XV

Once again traveling through the state of Louisiana, the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami runs through Super Bowl XV between the current defending-champion Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders.

Plunkett’s Perfect Performance

Despite the best efforts of the Philadelphia Eagles, the team wasn’t as lucky in 1981 as they were in the 2017 NFL season, eventually falling to the Oakland Raiders 27-10. Raiders quarterback Jim Plunkett, who executed a nearly flawless performance in Super Bowl XV, would lead the Raiders to their Super Bowl victory, as the first “Wild Card” Super Bowl champion.

This was, in fact, Oakland’s third overall Super Bowl appearance in 15 years, and Super Bowl XV was played in front of over 76,000 fans at the Louisiana Superdome, which at this point (and still to this day) is a Super Bowl hosting favorite.

Plunkett’s nearly perfect performance in Super Bowl XV, completing 13 of his 21 pass attempts for 261 yards and three touchdowns, would make him the second NCAA Heisman Trophy winner to capture a Super Bowl MVP title.

The halftime entertainment for Super Bowl XV was none other than Jim Skinner Productions, providing a “Mardi Gras Festival” theme for the halftime show. Over 68.2 million viewers tuned into NBC to catch Super Bowl XV in 1981, and the cost a 30-second commercial continued to rise, checking in at $324,000.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XIV

As we continue on the Road to the 2020 Super Bowl 54 in Miami, the Los Angeles Rams make their first appearance in the Super Bowl LIV Countdown, facing off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIV.

Back to Back Steelers

Played at the gorgeous Rose Bowl in sunny Pasadena, California in front of nearly 104,000 fans, the Los Angeles Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers met for the first time in Super Bowl XIV. Pittsburgh would capture yet another Super Bowl title, defeating the Rams by a score of 31-19. This was the first time the NFL had a team that hailed from the same surrounding area as the Super Bowl host, with the Los Angeles Rams playing just 14 miles from the LA Memorial Coliseum.

The Steelers also made history in Super Bowl XIV by becoming the first team to capture four Super Bowl titles, doing so in just a six-year span. The game was close for the majority of Super Bowl XIV, with Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw connecting with wide receiver Lynn Swann for a 47-yard touchdown pass, highlighting the Steelers victory. Bradshaw would go on to win Super Bowl XIV MVP award honors, finishing the game with 309 yards and two touchdowns.

Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier would once again handle the broadcast duties at the Super Bowl, broadcast on CBS in 1980. A 30-second commercial continued to rise in price, standing around $222,000 for Super Bowl XIV. The halftime show entertainment was provided by Up with People, presenting “A Salute to the Big Band Era.” Interesting enough, the Nielson Rating was 46.3 with an estimated 76.2 million viewers tuning into Super Bowl XIV.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XIII

Once again a showdown featuring two of the country’s most popular franchises, the Dallas Cowboys would face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIII.

Pittsburgh Prevails

Once again played in front of over 80,000 fans in Super Bowl 54 host Miami, Florida at the famed Orange Bowl, Super Bowl XIII would see the Pittsburgh Steelers, winners of the AFC, would go up against back-to-back NFC champion and the defending Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys. However, Super Bowl XIII would prove to be less enjoyable than the previous years for Dallas, as the Steelers would come away with the 35-31 victory.

Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors, completing 17 of his 30 passing attempts for 318 yards and four touchdowns, as the Steelers would never trail throughout the game. The final score of 35-31 was much closer than the game itself, as the Steelers actually led 35-17 with 19 seconds to go in the game. Super Bowl XIII would become infamously known as Black Sunday in Las Vegas, as many notable sportsbooks lost big on wagers throughout the game.

Cost of commercials during the Super Bowl continued to rise in 1979, this year’s cost of a 30-second spot rising to over $185,000 per spot, by far the most expensive to date for a Super Bowl. The announcers for Super Bowl XII were none other than Curt GowdyMerlin Olsen, and John Brodie.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XII

Two teams looking to bounce back after disappointing campaigns in 2018, the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys had reached the pinnacle in 1978, facing off in Super Bowl XII from the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“America’s Team” Wins Super Bowl XII

In a game played once again from New Orleans in front of early 76,000 fans, the Dallas Cowboys, dubbed “America’s Team,” would walk away victorious after a 27-10 matchup against the Denver Broncos.

Putting together a complete game in Super Bowl XII, the Cowboys defense would be vital to their victory. Dallas would go on to force eight  turnovers and only allowed eight pass completions for Denver throughout the entirety of the game. Cowboys wide receiver Butch Johnson would provide the highlight reel, most notably reeling in a 45-yard touchdown diving into the end zone.

Dallas’ defensive stars, linemen Randy White and Harvey Martin, would go on to be named Super Bowl co-MVPs, the first (and so far, only) time that two players would share Super Bowl MVP honors.

The cost of a 30 second television commercial during Super Bowl XII went up to $162,000, still paling in comparison to the Super Bowl LI’s rates. Pat Summerall would once again be the game announcer on CBS, hosting alongside analyst Tom Brookshier. At halftime, Super Bowl fans were treated to plenty of entertainment, including musicians Pete Fountain and Al Hirt.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XI

While the Minnesota Vikings are looking to take that next step on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in the 2019 NFL season, they were appearing in their third Super Bowl in four seasons back in 1977, as Super Bowl XI heads to the famed Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California!

An Offensive Attack

Super Bowl XI between the Vikings and AFC-champion Oakland Raiders would go down in history as one of the most offensive Super Bowls to date, with the Raiders racking up a then-NFL record 288 yards in offense in just the first half alone. This would help Oakland get out to an early Super Bowl XI lead, eventually leading to a 32-14 victory over the Vikings.

Super Bowl XI would be played in front of over 103,000 fans strong, making this Super Bowl at the Rose Bowl one of the most heavily attended.

Despite a strong showing by Raiders defensive back Willie Brown, who recorded a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown, it was wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff that would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors, registering four catches for 79 yards.

By Super Bowl XI, the halftime show had transitioned to becoming more of a performance instead of it being marching bands. Disney presented the “It’s A Small World” production with the Los Angeles Unified All-City Band for halftime of this Super Bowl.

Another interesting fact about Super Bowl XI remains that the national anthem was not sung, but instead, singer Vikki Carr performed “America the Beautiful” before kickoff.

Road to Super Bowl 54: Training Camp Headlines

With the 2019 NFL preseason in full swing, teams are in the heat of their training camps and preseason preparations. And as teams continue working on their goals of heading to Miami for Super Bowl LIV in 2020, we’re taking a look at some of the top training camp headlines to dominate the league over the opening weeks of the season.

Antonio Brown’s Helmet Debacle

“When the All-Pro receiver threatened to retire from football completely if he wasn’t allowed to wear his old helmet, the news set the NFL on fire. The problem was Brown’s favorite helmet is more than 10 years old and therefore cannot be certified as safe by the National Operating Committee for Standards and Athletic Equipment. Brown pushed the issue in a way never before seen, which included attempting to sneak his original helmet onto the practice field on multiple occasions — driving an early wedge between himself and the Oakland Raiders in the process.” — Read more at CBSSports.com.

Cowboys QB Prescott seeking “record money”

“Dak Prescott turned down a contract offer that would’ve averaged $30 million annually, according to NFL Network’s Jane Slater.

Slater reported Prescott is looking to get $40 million a year, which would make him the highest-paid player in the league, per Spotrac. Tom Brady and Russell Willson own the current mark as they each earn $35 million a season.” — Read more at BleacherReport.

Inspiring story: Browns wide receiver Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi

“On Thursday night, with less than four minutes left in the game between the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins, the Redskins punted the ball to the Browns’ 24-year-old receiver, Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi, who, in a flash, ran it back 86 yards for a touchdown.

Four months ago, according to the Browns, Sheehy-Guiseppi was a guy sleeping outside of a Miami gym. He had spent his last dollars traveling there from his home in Arizona in the hopes of impressing NFL scouts at their annual tryouts in North Miami. But, to complicate matters, once he arrived, the broke athlete didn’t have a formal invite to the tryout — those are usually reserved for college football standouts and Sheehy-Guiseppi hadn’t played college football for the past two years.” — Read more at CNN.com.

Washington Redskins refuse to trade tackle Trent Williams

“With the relationship between Washington and left tackle Trent Williams fractured, the Washington team president continues to believe that the passage of time will somehow unfracture the relationship, resulting in Williams walking through the door, reporting for duty, and playing for the team.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Washington has told multiple teams that Williams will not be traded. Teams repeatedly have inquired, per Schefter, and teams repeatedly have been rebuffed.” — Read more at ProFootball Talk.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl X

With the 2019 NFL season and the road to the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami just weeks away, two of America’s favorite teams, the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers, are looking to rebound after disappointing campaigns in 2018. In 1976, however, the two were squaring off in Super Bowl LIV host Miami, Florida at Orange Bowl Stadium for Super Bowl X.

Steelers Defeat “America’s Team”

Touting the title of “America’s Team” heading into Super Bowl X, the Dallas Cowboys would square off against the Pittsburgh Steelers, defending champions from Super Bowl IX (against the Minnesota Vikings). And for the second-straight season, the Steelers would walk away victors, a 21-17 win over the Cowboys.

Featuring two of the most iconic franchises in Super Bowl and NFL history, Super Bowl X was one of the more anticipated Super Bowls to date leading up to the big game. Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann, who managed to catch four passes for a record 161 yards and one touchdown, would become the first ever WR to walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors.

Pre-game, the National Anthem before Super Bowl X would be sung by Tom Sullivan in unison with “Up With People.” For halftime entertainment, fans were treated to an equally entertaining show by “Up With People,” who attributed the show to America’s Bicentennial. Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier were the announcers for Super Bowl X on CBS, and brands could expect to pay around $110,000 for a 30-second commercial in 1976.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl IX

As the 2019 NFL preseason gets underway, the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami in 2020 rolls on. After three-straight Super Bowl appearances by the Miami Dolphins, Super Bowl IX would have a new appearance from the AFC, as the Pittsburgh Steelers would face off against the Minnesota Vikings.

Franco MVP

Over 81,000 fans packed Tulane Stadium as the Super Bowl returned to New Orleans, Louisiana (host of Super Bowl 58 in 2024) for Super Bowl IX in 1975. The Pittsburgh Steelers, dethroning the Miami Dolphins after their three-straight appearances in the Super Bowl, would face off against the Minnesota Vikings in their second-straight appearance.

Pittsburgh would dominate in Super Bowl IX, with the Vikings’ only scoring of the game coming off of a blocked punt late in the game. And all of Pittsburgh’s efforts would be without some of their most noteworthy players, including linebackers Andy Russell and Jack Lambert, both of whom sat out due to injuries. The Super Bowl IX MVP award was given to Steelers running back Franco Harris, who recorded over 150 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Super Bowl IX halftime entertainment was provided by none other than Mercer Ellington and the Grambling State University band, a tribute to the great Duke Ellington.

The game was once againbroadcast on NBC and was covered by announcers Curt Gowdy, Al DeRogatis, Don Meredith and Charlie Jones.
