Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XLVIII

With the NFL’s “Final Four” almost officially set, we’re one step closer to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta on February 3rd. Heading back to 2014, the now Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos would square off against Russell Wilson’s Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII.

New York’s Super Bowl

In the first of quarterback Peyton Manning’s two Super Bowl visits post-Indianapolis Colts, the Denver Broncos took on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Despite being an outdoor Super Bowl in a cold-weather city, there were nearly 83,000 fans in attendance for the big game!

Seahawks linebacker Malcom Smith would break the streak of quarterback MVP’s, earning Super Bowl XLVIII honors with a strong performance. Smith finished the game with nine tackles, a recovered fumble and an interception returned 69 yards for a touchdown.

Super Bowl XLVIII went down in the record books as the largest-watched event in the history of television, broadcast on FOX to over 167 million viewers. Announcers Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Pam Oliver and Erin Andrews would handle broadcasting duties, and the cost of a 30-second spot would jump to $4 million. Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be cast for Super Bowl halftime duties in 2014.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XLVII

As we get set for Divisional Weekend in the NFL, two teams on the outside-looking-in at the Road to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta in 2019, the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, show down in Super Bowl XLVII.

Battle of the Harbaughs

For the very first time in Super Bowl history, two brothers would go head to head as head coaches of their respective teams, as Super Bowl XLVII would become known as the “Harbaugh Bowl,” with brothers Jim (49ers) and John (Ravens) Harbaugh as the opposing head coaches. The Baltimore Ravens would send the legendary linebacker Ray Lewis riding off into retirement with a Super Bowl victory, a 34-31 win over the 49ers, in a game played in front of over 71,000 fans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors in an effort that say him complete 22 of his 33 pass attempts for 287 yards and three touchdowns, the fourth QB in a row to win the award.

The National Anthem would be performed by Alicia Keys, and Super Bowl XLVII halftime would be performed by none other than the incomparable Beyonce.

Broadcasters Jim Nantz and Phil Simms would handle the game, broadcast on CBS, with the cost of a 30-second commercial coming in at $4 million, the highest in Super Bowl history.

Road to Super Bowl 53: Divisional Weekend

After Wild Card weekend, we officially have the NFL’s version of the “Elite Eight,” as we approach Divisional Weekend on the Road to Super Bowl 53. So who’s got the best chance to head to Atlanta next month for the big game?

A heartbreaker in Chicago after a missed game-winning field goal in the waning seconds has the defending Super Bowl champions breathing new life, as they’ll head to New Orleans to face the #1 seed Saints in the divisional round.

The Saints boasted the best record in the NFL in the 2018 season, and with their league-leading defense, will be the toughest test of the Eagles’ postseason run. The two teams faced each other in November, with the Saints beating the Eagles by a final score of 48-7.

After defending their home turf in the Wild Card round, the Dallas Cowboys will hit the road to face the #2 seed Los Angeles Rams and their potent offensive attack in the divisional round. Despite neither team meeting in the 2018 regular season, these two teams are quite familiar with one another, which will prove to be an intriguing matchup with Rams running back Todd Gurley looking to take on Dallas’ surprisingly staunch defense.

Saturday: Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams, 8:15 p.m. ET (FOX) | Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears, 4:40 p.m. ET (FOX)

Not something many predicted just a few short weeks back — but one could argue the two hottest teams in the AFC (and really, the entire NFL) right now are the Wild Card teams in the AFC in the 5-seed Los Angeles Chargers and the 6-seed Indianapolis Colts.

Winners of 10 of their last 11 games, the Indianapolis Colts are considered by many to be the hottest team in football, defeating the Houston Texans 21-7 on the road in the Wild Card round, setting up a matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs that sports the potential for fireworks on both offensive sides of the ball.

Between Colts quarterback Andrew Luck (39) and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (50), the two combined for 89 touchdown passes in the regular season, the most between two quarterbacks to face off in the postseason in NFL history. And with plenty of playmakers such as T.Y. Hilton, Tyreek Hill, and plenty of others, this Divisional showdown is arguably the marquee matchup of the weekend.

The second matchup on the AFC’s side is a matchup that seems all-too-familiar — the Los Angeles Chargers traveling to New England to face quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots.

It’s like a broken record — Brady and Belichick are having a down season, yet somehow still manage the #2 seed and a bye week. Brady has never lost to any of the remaining quarterbacks in the AFC’s playoff race, and Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will be looking to change that.

Saturday: Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs, 4:35 p.m. ET (NBC) | Sunday: Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots, 1:05 p.m. ET (CBS)

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl XLVI

Once again in 2018, the New England Patriots hold a first-round bye in the AFC on the Road to Super Bowl 53. In 2012, the Patriots would (once again) come up short at the hands of the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.

Eli vs. Brady: II

Played in Indianapolis, Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium in front of 68,658 people who attended the game, the Patriots would lose to the Giants by a final score was 21-17.

MVP of Super Bowl XLVI was none other than Eli Manning, quarterback for the Giants. Eli was the third consecutive quarterback to win the MVP title. Manning completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. After this Super Bowl was complete, the giants had won four Super Bowls.

Super Bowl XLVI was broadcasted on NBC’s network and had a Super Bowl breaking title of the most viewers. The total amount of viewers for this particular game was 166.8 million. Kelly Clarkson sang the National Anthem and Madonna was featured during halftime. Al Michaels, Chris Collinsworth, and Michele Tafoya were the announcers for the game. The cost of a 30 second commercial at Super Bowl XLVI was $3.5 million dollars.

Road to Super Bowl 53: Wild Card Weekend

The stage is officially set — what began with 32 teams in September has come down to the final 12, with all eyes on Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for Super Bowl 53. A quick preview of the Wild Card weekend matchups as we kick off the 2018 NFL postseason!

All roads to Atlanta and Super Bowl 53 run through the New Orleans Saints in the NFC, with the Los Angeles Rams the other team sporting a Wild Card weekend bye.

The headlining matchups in the NFC this weekend feature the Dallas Cowboys hosting the Seattle Seahawks, and the NFC North champion Chicago Bears hosting the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Saturday: Seattle Seahawks at Dallas Cowboys, 8:15 p.m. ET (FOX) | Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears, 4:40 p.m. ET (NBC)

Up until the waning minutes of the 2018 regular season, the AFC’s playoff picture was still very much in flux. With the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots winning to secure their first-round byes, the Los Angeles Chargers were the only remaining team locked into their playoff spot ahead of a crucial Sunday night matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans.

Winners of 9 of their last 10 games (and the remaining wild card spot), the red hot Indianapolis Colts’ victory Sunday night cemented the matchups, heading back to Houston to take on the division-rival Texans in a rubber match, with the Baltimore Ravens hosting the Los Angeles Chargers.

Saturday: Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans, 4:35 p.m. ET (ESPN/ABC) | Sunday: Los Angeles Chargers at Baltimore Ravens, 1:05 p.m. ET (CBS)
