As we get set for the final two weeks of the 2019 NFL season, two of the top teams on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami in 2020, the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, show down in Super Bowl XLVII.

Battle of the Harbaugh Brothers

For the very first time in Super Bowl history, two brothers would go head to head as head coaches of their respective teams, as Super Bowl XLVII would become known as the “Harbaugh Bowl,” with brothers Jim (49ers) and John (Ravens) Harbaugh as the opposing head coaches. The Baltimore Ravens would send the legendary linebacker Ray Lewis riding off into retirement with a Super Bowl victory, a 34-31 win over the 49ers, in a game played in front of over 71,000 fans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors in an effort that say him complete 22 of his 33 pass attempts for 287 yards and three touchdowns, the fourth QB in a row to win the award.

The National Anthem would be performed by Alicia Keys, and Super Bowl XLVII halftime would be performed by none other than the incomparable Beyonce.

Broadcasters Jim Nantz and Phil Simms would handle the game, broadcast on CBS, with the cost of a 30-second commercial coming in at $4 million, the highest in Super Bowl history.

Another instant classic on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami, the New England Patriots and New York Giants squared off in Super Bowl XLVI from Indianapolis, in the second Super Bowl matchup between Tom Brady and Eli Manning.

Played in Indianapolis, Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium in front of 68,658 people who attended the game, the Patriots would lose to the Giants by a final score of 21-17.

MVP of Super Bowl XLVI was none other than Eli Manning, quarterback for the Giants, the third consecutive quarterback to win the MVP title. Super Bowl XLVI was broadcasted on NBC’s network and had a Super Bowl breaking title of the most viewers. The total amount of viewers for this particular game was 166.8 million. Kelly Clarkson sang the National Anthem and Madonna was featured during halftime. Al Michaels, Chris Collinsworth, and Michele Tafoya were the announcers for the game. The 2019 NFL playoffs are nearly set… and with just a few weeks left until the field of 32 is narrowed to 12 on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami, we’re heading back to Super Bowl XLV between two 2020 Super Bowl hopefuls — the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers.

A-Rod Gets His Ring

Played in front of 91,060 fans at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texans, Super Bowl XLV between the Packers and Steelers was one of the most exciting Super Bowls in recent memory. Head coach Mike McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers would take home the Lombardi trophy, by a final score of 31-25.

Super Bowl XLV MVP honors were awarded to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, after completing 25 of his 39 pass attempts for 304 yards and three touchdowns. The Packers came out of the gates firing in the first half, building a lead that would prove to be insurmountable to the Steelers, eventually winning Green Bay the game.

Popular artist Christina Aguilera sang the national anthem before Super Bowl XLV, with the halftime show returning to it’s hip-hop roots with the Black Eyed Peas, Usher and Slash. FOX Network broadcasted Super Bowl XLV, with announcers Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Pam Oliver and Chris Myers handling broadcasting duties. With Week 15 nearing, it appears the road to Super Bowl 54 in the NFC may run through New Orleans. The last time they held home field advantage? The 2009 NFL season, which resulted in a Super Bowl XLIV victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Saints Complete the Comeback

Super Bowl XLIV, played between the Saints and Colts, was played on February 7, 2010 in Miami, Florida at Sun Life Stadium. In front of nearly 75,000 fans, the Saints would go on to capture the Lombardi Trophy, by a final score of 31-17.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees took home Super Bowl XLIV MVP honors, completing 32 of his 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. Brees tied a record previously held by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, with 32 total completions in the big game. Brady set the record initially in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Super Bowl XLIV was aired on CBS in front of a total of 153.4 million viewers, with the cost of a 30-second commercial rising to a whopping $3 million. Commentators Jim Nantz and Phil Simms boradcasted Super Bowl XLIV, with legendary band “The Who” performing at halftime.

With the road to the 2019 NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl 54 in Miami beginning to take shape, we’re getting closer on the Super Bowl countdown — next up, Super Bowl XLIII, an instant classic, between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals.

The victory would give the Steelers their sixth Super Bowl title in franchise history, the first franchise to win the coveted Lombardi Trophy six times.

Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes would take home Super Bowl MVP honors, finishing the game with nine catches for 131 yards and the go-ahead touchdown, a toe-dragging dramatic touchdown that would go on to be the iconic image taken away from this Super Bowl.

The National Anthem for Super Bowl XLIII would be performed by Jennifer Hudson, and halftime entertainment by the legendary Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Super Bowl XLIII would go down as the most watched Super Bowl in history (to date), with over 151 million viewers tuning into NBC to see Al Michaels, John Madden, Andrea Kremer and Alex Flanagan handle broadcasting duties. The cost of a 30-second commercial spot would continue to rise, cashing in at anywhere between $2.4 million to $3 million per commercial.

One of the all-time classics on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami, as the New England Patriots face off against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

Played in front of over 71,000 fans at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the New England Patriots and New York Giants would show down in what would go on to become an instant classic in Super Bowl history, with the Giants walking away with the Super Bowl victory, 17-14.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning, most notable at that point for being a member of the Manning family, with old brother Peyton being a previous Super Bowl champion and league MVP, would walk away with his own ring and Super Bowl MVP honors in 2008. Manning would complete 19 of his 34 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns, but the play that would be most remembered would be a 32-yard completion to wide receive David Tyree, who would pin the ball against his helmet.

Super Bowl XLII would not only become an instant classic, but it would also go down in infamy for the Patriots, who would fall victim to one of the biggest upsets in NFL history. The Patriots, the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to complete an undefeated regular season, were sitting at 18-0 heading into the Super Bowl, with the Giants being massive underdogs against one of the more prolific offenses in NFL history.

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks would perform the National Anthem ahead of Super Bowl XLII, which was aired on FOX Sports to a total of 97.5 million viewers. The cost of a 30-second commercial spot in 2008 was up to $2.7 million, and halftime was performed by the late legend Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

Peyton Gets His 1st Ring

On February 4, 2007, the Colts and Bears kicked off a historic Super Bowl XLI from Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida. Super Bowl XLI would become the first Super Bowl in which not only was there an African American head coach leading one of the two teams, but both teams, and one would become the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl. The Indianapolis Colts and head coach Tony Dungy would take home the title, by a final score of 29-17.

Many remember Super Bowl XLI as the Super Bowl where Colts quarterback Peyton Manning finally got the “monkey off his back.” After years of early playoff exits and disappointing finishes, Manning and the Colts had finally captured their first Lombardi trophy. Manning would go on to be named Super Bowl XLI MVP, completing 25 of his 38 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown.

In front of 74,512 football fans at Dolphin Stadium, the late Prince would perform the Super Bowl halftime show, in a performance that would become iconic, and the national anthem was sung by Billy Joel. A total of 93.2 million fans tuned in to catch Super Bowl XLI, broadcast by Jim Nantz and Phil Simms on CBS. Just a few short weeks left on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in 2020 in Miami, we’re kicking it back to Super Bowl XL in the Motor City, with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks facing off from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

Pittsburgh’s Big (Ben) Win

A showdown between two of the best teams that season, the Pittsburgh Steelers would walk away from Super Bowl XL as champions, a 21-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Played at the current home of the Detroit Lions, Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, nearly 70,000 fans would pack the stands for Super Bowl XL.

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors in 2006, caching five passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl XL. However, it was a different touchdown that Ward would go down in the history books for. Ward to this day remains as the only wide receiver to THROW a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XL would feature a unique National Anthem ahead of kickoff, as the anthem would be performed by a variety of artists, includingAaron NevilleAretha Franklin and Dr. John. The coin toss to get the game started would be tossed by Patriots quarterback and former Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, a coin toss representing all Super Bowl MVPs to come before him. Halftime would be performed by the legendary Rolling Stones to over 90.7 million viewers on ABC, with the broadcasting duties being handled by the legendary John Madden, Al Michaels, Michele Tafoya and Suzy Kolber.

Making their third Super Bowl appearance in four years, the (both then and now) defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots were establishing themselves as the early-2000s dynasty in the NFL. The Road to Super Bowl 54 runs through Jacksonville, Florida for Super Bowl XXXIX.

The Beginning of a Championship Dynasty

Yet another exciting, close Super Bowl matchup, the dynamic Brady-Belichick duo of the New England Patriots would go on to win their third Super Bowl in four years, a 24-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Super Bowl XXXIX was played at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, in front of over 78,000 fans.

Patriots wide receive Deion Branch would go on to win Super Bowl MVP honors, recording a total of 133 receiving yards on 11 catches, including a crucial catch to set up kicker Adam Vinatieri for a 22-yard field goal that would put the Patriots ahead 24-14 late in the fourth quarter. Branch’s 11 catches in Super Bowl XXXIX would give the receiver the record for most combined receptions in two Super Bowls.

Playing it safe after the previous year’s halftime wardrobe malfunction, the legend Paul McCartney was brought in to perform Super Bowl XXXIX halftime, with the pre-game National Anthem being performed by a mixture of choirs from the armed forces. Over 86 million viewers tuned in to catch the Super Bowl on FOX, and the cost of a 30-second commercial was up to $2.4 million total.

Their second Super Bowl appearance in three years, the New England Patriots were well on their way to solidifying themselves as a championship dynasty in the NFL, continuing on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in 2020… this time facing off against the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

The second of three Super Bowls to be hosted in Houston, Texas, the New England Patriots would square off against the Carolina Panthers in their second Super Bowl appearance in three years, winning the second Super Bowl of the Brady-Belichick era with a game-winning field goal from kicker Adam Vinatieri, 32-29.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (surprise!) would go on to win his second Super Bowl MVP of his career, also the second in three years. Brady would set a Super Bowl record for most pass completions in a game, completing 32 of his 48 pass attempts, and netting 354 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime lives infamously in history as far as public performances go, as this was the infamous Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake duo that featured a wardrobe malfunction on live television. There were over 89 million viewers who caught Super Bowl XXXVIII on CBS, a game that was called by Greg Gumbel, Phil Simms, Armen Keteyian and Bonnie Berstein. Beyonce would perform the national anthem ahead of kickoff, and the cost of a 30-second commercial rose to around $2.2 million in 2004.
