NFL Division Preview: NFC East

In the finale of Bullseye’s NFL divisional previews, everybody’s favorite division to talk about; the NFC East. Here is what the path to Super Bowl LI in Houston looks like for the four teams.

DivisionPreview (6)

Last year (2015): Washington Redskins (9-7), Philadelphia Eagles (7-9), New York Giants (6-10), Dallas Cowboys (4-12)

The Washington Redskins have found their quarterback in Kirk Cousins, choosing to release former #2 pick Robert Griffin III in the offseason and supplanting their faith in Cousins. The Redskins also bolstered their defense in signing pro-bowl cornerback and former NFC Champion Josh Norman after the Carolina Panthers revoked his franchise tag in late April.

The Philadelphia Eagles find themselves in the middle of a quarterback crisis, after signing Sam Bradford to an extended deal and drafting rookie Carson Wentz #2 overall. Bradford, who had previously stated he would hold out for a trade, eventually dropped the trade demand and returned to team activities. The Eagles also traded running back Demarco Murray to the Tennessee Titans.

The New York Giants had a quiet offseason, beginning with the subtle resignation of head coach Tom Coughlin. Quarterback Eli Manning and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. continue to anchor the offense.

And then, the disaster that is the Dallas Cowboys. The team cut controversial defensive end Greg Hardy, and look forward to the return of quarterback Tony Romo following yet another season-ending collarbone injury. The team added some serious depth to the backfield, signing running back Alfred Morris from Washington and drafting Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott #4 overall.

Prediction: Redskins take the division, but bigger turn around goes to the Dallas Cowboys, who make a push for the playoffs.

NFL OTAs: Who To Watch

As the road to Super Bowl 51 in Houston begins to gain some steam, the next step in the NFL’s offseason programs is OTAs, or organized team activities. Here’s who you should be watching as the Indianapolis Colts begin their offseason OTAs.

Offensive Line

The offensive line, as many Colts fans know, underwent a massive reconstruction in the offseason, with general manager Ryan Grigson taking four linemen in the eight picks the Colts held in the 2016 NFL Draft.

All eyes will be on center Ryan Kelly out of Alabama, the Colts 1st-round selection (#18 overall), and how he meshes and bonds with quarterback Andrew Luck. Kelly plays a position that has seemingly been a turnstile of players for the Colts in the past.

How the coaching staff plans to configure the rest of the offensive line remains to be seen. Linemen Anthony Castonzo and Jack Mewhort have their positions virtually guaranteed, but the other two positions remain question marks for the Colts. A slimmed-down Hugh Thornton hopes to contribute, second-year Denzelle Good, and rookies La’Raven Clark and Joe Haeg will fight to be in the mix as well.

Colts fans just hope this means the beginning of a stable offensive line, and a healthy quarterback.

Andrew Luck

After a year in which Luck missed nine games due to various injuries, the Colts quarterback is going to reportedly change his style of play, in a way that protects himself more.

How Luck returns to form after those injuries, however, is what fans should try and sneak glimpses of in the network coverage of Colts OTAs.

Colts fans haven’t seen Andrew Luck throw a football since that week 9 victory over the eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, and are eager to see the QB return to his original form.

Indianapolis Colts Draft Review

As the Indianapolis Colts continue their building toward Super Bowl 51 in Houston, the NFL Draft served as a way for general manager Ryan Grigson to help shore up the offensive line.

2016 MastersReview (7)

The Indianapolis Colts placed a heavy emphasis on protecting quarterback Andrew Luck, selecting four lineman with their seven picks in the 2016 NFL Draft.

In the first round, the Colts potentially found Andrew Luck the Jeff Saturday to his Peyton Manning, selecting Alabama center Ryan Kelly with their first pick in the draft. Kelly only allowed four QB rushes and ZERO sacks in his 2015-16 national championship campaign for the Crimson Tide.

Alongside Kelly, the Colts offensive line added offensive tackles Le’Raven Clark out of Texas Tech and Joe Haeg out of North Dakota State, as well as center Austin Blythe out of Iowa. This offensive bolstering led to the Colts cutting OL Khaled Holmes.

The Colts also added to their defense through the draft, though many weren’t happy with the lack of pass rush that was acquired. Indianapolis drafted safety T.J. Green in the second round, a player many had as a first-round talent. The Colts also added defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway out of Texas, and linebackers Antonio Morrison out of Florida and Trevor Bates out of Maine.

2016 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts

The 2016 NFL Draft serves as the second of leg of the offseason road to Super Bowl 51 in Houston. We preview the Indianapolis Colts’ many draft needs.

2016 MastersReview (4)

Offensive Lineman: Ryan Kelly, C (Alabama)

If the Indianapolis Colts choose to bolster their offensive line with the #18 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and center Ryan Kelly out of Alabama is available, general manager Ryan Grigson should not even think twice about taking the prospect.

Since Jeff Saturday’s departure in 2012, the Colts have struggled to find a decent starting center, juggling around names like Khaled Holmes, Jonotthan Harrison and even giving guard Hugh Thornton some snaps. A solid center to anchor the offensive line is the first step in the Colts’ pursuit of protecting quarterback Andrew Luck.

Linebacker: Noah Spence, OLB (Eastern Kentucky)

Should Indianapolis choose to fill their need at the linebacker position, many mock drafts have the Colts taking former Ohio State and Eastern Kentucky linebacker Noah Spence.

Following the loss of Jerrell Freeman to the Chicago Bears and releasing Jonathan Newsome, the Colts find themselves pretty thin at the linebacker position. Drafting a young and talented LB could also serve a smooth transition for the Colts whenever team sack leader Robert Mathis decides to hang it up.

Pass Rush: Shaq Lawson, DE (Clemson)

The Colts have been looking for that next great pass rusher on the line since losing Dwight Freeney in 2012 and moving Robert Mathis to outside linebacker.

Defensive end Shaq Lawson, of the national championship runner-up Clemson Tigers, would be a solid young defensive talent that, like Spence, would be allowed the opportunity to learn underneath the tutelage of Mathis and provide for a smooth transition, at the very least.
