NFL Division Preview: NFC South

The NFC South produced the NFC’s Super Bowl 50 participant in the Carolina Panthers in 2015. Here’s what the road to Super Bowl LI in Houston looks like for the division.

DivisionPreview (4)

Last Year (2015): Carolina Panthers (15-1), Atlanta Falcons (8-8), New Orleans Saints (7-9), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-10)

The Carolina Panthers boasted the best record in the NFL in 2015, finishing at 15-1, the one loss being to the division-rival Atlanta Falcons. The team, however, experienced a blow to their defense following their Super Bowl 50 loss to the Denver Broncos. Cornerback Josh Norman, arguably the MVP of the entire Panthers team, let alone the defense, had his franchise tag rescinded in April, resulting in the CB bolting for the Washington Redskins.

The Atlanta Falcons improved in 2015 under new head coach Dan Quinn, but still struggled mightily. The team did not make any big splashes in the offseason, losing wide receiver Roddy White being their most notable departure.

The New Orleans Saints remained quiet as well, with a mundane 2016 NFL Draft class and no big free agency moves.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a surprise move by firing head coach Lovie Smith after their improved 6-10 season with rookie quarterback Jameis Winston. The Bucs promoted offensive linemen Dirk Koetter to head coach, with Smith jetting for the college realm of Illinois.

Prediction; Panthers take the division again, but the Buccaneers continue to make an improvement and challenge for the 2nd spot.

NFL Division Preview: AFC East

The AFC East is predominantly the New England Patriots’ division, and has been for over a decade. Here is what 2016 will look like for the AFC East.

DivisionPreview (2)

Last year (2015): New England Patriots (12-4), New York Jets (10-6), Buffalo Bills (8-8), Miami Dolphins (6-10)

The New England Patriots will face a tougher road in the 2016 season, with quarterback Tom Brady’s “Deflate Gate” suspension remaining in place (for now). However, it’s Bill Belichick. So it’s hard to believe the Patriots will fall much further than their 12-4 mark in 2015.

The New York Jets remain in an unstable limbo at the quarterback position, losing journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrcik, leaving the Jets with third-year veteran Geno Smith, who missed half of last season with a broken jaw, and unproven rookie Christian Hackenberg out of Penn State.

The Bills have improved mightily over the offseason, adding bulk to their defense through both free agency in the draft. The Bills remain in limbo at the QB position as well, returning starter Tyrod Taylor from 2015, but also having draft pick Cardale Jones.

The Dolphins, once again, played the role of big spender in free agency. However, whether or not this will payoff remains to be seen. After dropping loads of money on defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in 2015, the Dolphins went after veterans such as Mario Williams in 2016. The Dolphins did, however, lose a large chunk of their offense in running back Lamar Miller, who signed with the Houston Texans.

Prediction? The Patriots take the AFC East once again, be challenged closely by the Bills. The Jets and Dolphins will, most likely, be sitting at the bottom of the AFC.

Rookie Spotlight: T.J. Green

The Indianapolis Colts will report to training camp at Anderson University on July 26. As we get closer to the beginning of football season, Bullseye Event Group highlights rookie T.J. Green, a safety who helps to be a key contributor in the Colts’ quest for Super Bowl 51.

Copy of DivisionPreview

The Indianapolis Colts drafted safety T.J. Green out of Clemson in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, adding depth to a position that saw the loss of 2015 starter Dwight Lowery.

Green started as a true-freshman wide receiver with Clemson, before head coach Dabo Swinney moved Green to the safety position. There, Green would help lead a talented Clemson defense to the National Championship Game in 2015, before declaring for the NFL Draft.

NFL.com’s analysis of Green calls the rookie “speedster who had a few “walk down” tackles coming from way behind to make tackles on breakaways.” Green boasts a lightning-quick 4.34 40-yard dash, as well as a reputation of being a hard hitter.

Colts fans are hoping that Green can provide a Bob Sanders-esque hard hitting reputation to the Colts secondary, minus the injuries that plagued much of Sanders’ seven years in Indianapolis. Though many “experts” feel the Colts reached for Green in the second round, but the Colts have made it clear they were thrilled the safety was still there.

NFL Division Preview: AFC North

Though historically one of the the stronger divisions in the NFL, the AFC North experienced somewhat of a down year in 2015. We take a look at the AFC North’s path to Super Bowl 51 in Houston.

DivisionPreview (1)

Last Year (2015): Cincinnati Bengals (12-4), Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6), Baltimore Ravens (5-11), Cleveland Browns (3-13)

The Cincinnati Bengals saw one of their best seasons in nearly a decade in 2015, yet continued to show their playoff woes. Following quarterback Andy Dalton’s broken thumb, Cincy was relegated to rely on QB A.J. McCarron, who struggled mightily in the playoffs.

The Steelers, who were hot and cold throughout the season, made it into the playoffs before losing to the New England Patriots in the divisional round. The team returns its core of Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown on offense, regaining the services of running back Le’Veon Bell following a knee injury in 2015.

The Baltimore Ravens are still reeling from their 2015 campaign, which saw a devastating knee injury sustained to QB Joe Flacco in the closing weeks of the season. Flacco plans to be ready to play at the beginning of the season, at what form or level remains to be seen.

And the Cleveland Browns. Well, they were the Cleveland Browns in 2015. The team is hoping to utilize the services of quarterback and former #2 pick Robert Griffin III, following the release of Johnny Manziel. The team, with new head coach Hue Jackson, looks to try and end the “Cleveland curse,” but still remains quite a mess.

Prediction: The Bengals will continue to rule the roost, in close contention with the Steelers. The drop from #2 to #3 in the division is a cliff.

NFL Division Preview: AFC South

As we continue on the road to Super Bowl 51, football fans have hit that offseason lull. Once organized team activities begin, there isn’t much news to be had, on or off the field. That’s why Bullseye will preview one division a week, leading up to the 2016 NFL regular season.

First up: the AFC South

DivisionPreview

The AFC South, previously one of the weakest divisions in the NFL, is on pace to be quite an interesting contest in 2016. We take a look at why this might be one of the toughest divisions in the league.

Last Year (2015): Houston Texans (9-7), Indianapolis Colts (8-8), Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11), Tennessee Titans (3-13)

Although the Indianapolis Colts have generally been the perennial favorites in the AFC South, the road to Super Bowl 51 in Houston looks much tougher in 2016.

Following a carousel of quarterbacks following Andrew Luck’s tumultuous 2015 campaign, the Indianapolis Colts will regain the QB at full strength, boasting a newly revamped offensive line, a young and talented receiving corps, and a defense that showed glimmers of hope in 2016. All complimented by a completely renovated coaching staff beneath head coach Chuck Pagano.

The Houston Texans, the 2015 victors of the division, might have finally found their franchise quarterback after spending nearly 15 years searching in Brock Osweiler. The Texans didn’t stop there, however. Houston landed running back Lamar Miller to replace the oft-injured and now-released Arian Foster, and drafted receiver Will Fuller out of Notre Dame and playmaker Braxton Miller out of Ohio State.

The Jacksonville Jaguars also bolstered their defense in the offseason. Head coach Gus Bradley, who was arguably one of the most improved coaches in the NFL last season, will head into the season with a very different defense. Rookies Jalen Ramsey (CB), Myles Jack (LB), and Sheldon Day (DT) add to a defense that already saw the addition of veterans like cornerback Prince Amukamara, among others.

And the Tennessee Titans, with the worst record in the 2015 regular season, also got much better, adding several key veterans such as pro-bowl running back Demarco Murray, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.

Prediction? The Colts return to form and begin a new streak of AFC South dominance, so long as Luck stays healthy.

Andrew Luck’s Playing Style

If the Indianapolis Colts want any chance at making Super Bowl 51, quarterback Andrew Luck is going to have to remain healthy. But the question looming as the Colts begin OTAs is whether or not Luck should change the way he approaches the game.

2016 MastersReview (12)

Should Change

Andrew Luck suffered a season-ending lacerated kidney in week 9 of the NFL’s regular season, a game which saw the Colts defeat the undefeated and eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.

The Colts offensive line was, let’s just say, less than desirable in 2015, and one would be tempted to blame Luck’s injury riddled campaign on this. However, the injury that ended up shelving Luck for the remainder of the season wasn’t sustained in the pocket; rather, a scramble.

In the 2nd half, Luck scrambled and was hit by two Broncos defenders, folding the QB into a nasty hit. No offensive linemen. No pocket breakdown. This scramble was for a first down, a run that Luck chose to make, resulting in an injury.

Although admirable, Luck’s drive to get the first down at all costs did not help when it came to injuries. Learning when and how to properly slide could benefit the quarterback.

Devil’s Advocate

But what about all of those gutsy comebacks? Those games won, those 4th-quarter drives that were revived by a scrambling Luck’s motivation to reach the marker?

True, Luck’s motivation to put the team on his back is far and large why the Colts have had success in the quarterback’s first 3.5 seasons (we’re not going to count the second half of last year). Luck has already broken Colts records for QB rushing touchdowns and yards, and his ability to move when needed is incredibly valuable to the Colts offense.

Bottom line, there is a mixture of the two that must occur. While Luck doesn’t need to entirely become a docile, fragile quarterback who takes a sack falling down, he also will need to modify his game to learn when to step out of bounds or take a slide.

NFL OTAs: Who To Watch

As the road to Super Bowl 51 in Houston begins to gain some steam, the next step in the NFL’s offseason programs is OTAs, or organized team activities. Here’s who you should be watching as the Indianapolis Colts begin their offseason OTAs.

2016 MastersReview (11)
Offensive Line

The offensive line, as many Colts fans know, underwent a massive reconstruction in the offseason, with general manager Ryan Grigson taking four linemen in the eight picks the Colts held in the 2016 NFL Draft.

All eyes will be on center Ryan Kelly out of Alabama, the Colts 1st-round selection (#18 overall), and how he meshes and bonds with quarterback Andrew Luck. Kelly plays a position that has seemingly been a turnstile of players for the Colts in the past.

How the coaching staff plans to configure the rest of the offensive line remains to be seen. Linemen Anthony Castonzo and Jack Mewhort have their positions virtually guaranteed, but the other two positions remain question marks for the Colts. A slimmed-down Hugh Thornton hopes to contribute, second-year Denzelle Good, and rookies La’Raven Clark and Joe Haeg will fight to be in the mix as well.

Colts fans just hope this means the beginning of a stable offensive line, and a healthy quarterback.

Andrew Luck

After a year in which Luck missed nine games due to various injuries, the Colts quarterback is going to reportedly change his style of play, in a way that protects himself more.

How Luck returns to form after those injuries, however, is what fans should try and sneak glimpses of in the network coverage of Colts OTAs.

Colts fans haven’t seen Andrew Luck throw a football since that week 9 victory over the eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, and are eager to see the QB return to his original form.
