Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl LII

The matchup for Super Bowl LIV in Miami is officially set! As the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers prepare for their 2020 matchup at Hard Rock Stadium in Super Bowl 54, we’re looking back at a classic — Super Bowl LII.

Philly Special

Played once again in a cold-weather city, the first Super Bowl in the brand-new U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, would feature the New England Patriots taking on the NFC-champion Philadelphia Eagles. A back-and-forth offensive battle, the Eagles would put together one of the more spectacular Super Bowl performances, shutting down Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in the waning minutes of the game to walk away as Super Bowl LII champions, 41-33.

Super Bowl LII was a record-breaking Super Bowl in many varieties, including most years gained by both teams in one game (1,151), fewest combined punts (one), and most points scored by a losing team in the Super Bowl (33). Eagles quarterback Nick Foles would complete his improbable Super Bowl run with MVP honors in Super Bowl LII, finishing the game 28-of-43 for 373, three touchdowns and one interception, as well as a one-yard touchdown reception on the play dubbed the “Philly Special.”

The broadcast of the game on NBC had the smallest Super Bowl audience in nine years, with an average of 103.4 million viewers. Average TV viewership for the halftime show, headlined by Justin Timberlake, was 106.6 million American television viewers, 9 percent less than the previous year.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl LI

The 2020 Super Bowl in Miami is almost here, with the Road to Super Bowl LIV making it’s way through San Francisco and Kansas City for the AFC and NFC Championship games this weekend!

Making their fourth Super Bowl appearance in five years, the New England Patriots were winners in 2017, a remarkable comeback victory against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI.

A Comeback for the History Books

Despite jumping out to a 28-3 lead early, the Atlanta Falcons would fall capture to one of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s signature comebacks, with the Patriots completing the most improbably comeback in Super Bowl history, a 34-28 victory in the first ever Super Bowl overtime.

Brady would walk away with Super Bowl MVP honors once again, tossing 466 yards and two touchdowns in a game that Patriots owner Robert Kraft would call “unequivocally the sweetest” Super Bowl victory of the Patriots’ dominant dynasty.

An average of 111.3 million viewers caught Super Bowl LI on FOX, and the cost of a 30-second spot stayed at the $5 million asking price from Super Bowl 50. Lady Gaga would perform a legendary halftime show at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XLII

One of the all-time classics on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in Miami, as the New England Patriots face off against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

Giants Escape New England

Played in front of over 71,000 fans at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the New England Patriots and New York Giants would show down in what would go on to become an instant classic in Super Bowl history, with the Giants walking away with the Super Bowl victory, 17-14.

Giants quarterback Eli Manning, most notable at that point for being a member of the Manning family, with old brother Peyton being a previous Super Bowl champion and league MVP, would walk away with his own ring and Super Bowl MVP honors in 2008. Manning would complete 19 of his 34 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns, but the play that would be most remembered would be a 32-yard completion to wide receive David Tyree, who would pin the ball against his helmet.

Super Bowl XLII would not only become an instant classic, but it would also go down in infamy for the Patriots, who would fall victim to one of the biggest upsets in NFL history. The Patriots, the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to complete an undefeated regular season, were sitting at 18-0 heading into the Super Bowl, with the Giants being massive underdogs against one of the more prolific offenses in NFL history.

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks would perform the National Anthem ahead of Super Bowl XLII, which was aired on FOX Sports to a total of 97.5 million viewers. The cost of a 30-second commercial spot in 2008 was up to $2.7 million, and halftime was performed by the late legend Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XXXIX

Making their third Super Bowl appearance in four years, the (both then and now) defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots were establishing themselves as the early-2000s dynasty in the NFL. The Road to Super Bowl 54 runs through Jacksonville, Florida for Super Bowl XXXIX.

The Beginning of a Championship Dynasty

Yet another exciting, close Super Bowl matchup, the dynamic Brady-Belichick duo of the New England Patriots would go on to win their third Super Bowl in four years, a 24-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Super Bowl XXXIX was played at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, in front of over 78,000 fans.

Patriots wide receive Deion Branch would go on to win Super Bowl MVP honors, recording a total of 133 receiving yards on 11 catches, including a crucial catch to set up kicker Adam Vinatieri for a 22-yard field goal that would put the Patriots ahead 24-14 late in the fourth quarter. Branch’s 11 catches in Super Bowl XXXIX would give the receiver the record for most combined receptions in two Super Bowls.

Playing it safe after the previous year’s halftime wardrobe malfunction, the legend Paul McCartney was brought in to perform Super Bowl XXXIX halftime, with the pre-game National Anthem being performed by a mixture of choirs from the armed forces. Over 86 million viewers tuned in to catch the Super Bowl on FOX, and the cost of a 30-second commercial was up to $2.4 million total.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XXXVIII

Their second Super Bowl appearance in three years, the New England Patriots were well on their way to solidifying themselves as a championship dynasty in the NFL, continuing on the Road to Super Bowl 54 in 2020… this time facing off against the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Another For New England

The second of three Super Bowls to be hosted in Houston, Texas, the New England Patriots would square off against the Carolina Panthers in their second Super Bowl appearance in three years, winning the second Super Bowl of the Brady-Belichick era with a game-winning field goal from kicker Adam Vinatieri, 32-29.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (surprise!) would go on to win his second Super Bowl MVP of his career, also the second in three years. Brady would set a Super Bowl record for most pass completions in a game, completing 32 of his 48 pass attempts, and netting 354 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime lives infamously in history as far as public performances go, as this was the infamous Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake duo that featured a wardrobe malfunction on live television. There were over 89 million viewers who caught Super Bowl XXXVIII on CBS, a game that was called by Greg Gumbel, Phil Simms, Armen Keteyian and Bonnie Berstein. Beyonce would perform the national anthem ahead of kickoff, and the cost of a 30-second commercial rose to around $2.2 million in 2004.

Brady completed 16 of his 27 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown, including leading a drive that would set up future hall-of-fame kicker Adam Vinatieri’s game-winning field goal.

Countdown to 2020 Miami: Super Bowl XX

With Week 3 on the Road to Super Bowl 54 about to kick off, two of the most iconic franchises in the league are set to square off in Super Bowl XX, once again hosted in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Chicago Bears & The Super Bowl Shuffle

Both making Super Bowl appearances for the first time in franchise history, the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots were set to face off in front of nearly 74,000 fans at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, a popular Super Bowl host. And in 1986, the ‘Super Bowl Shuffle’ squad Chicago Bears would dominate the Patriots, winning by a score of 46-10.

The Bear’s dominance wasn’t a surprise to many, as in 1985, the Bears flaunted one of the most revered defenses of all-time, boasting a 15-win season heading into the playoffs. Richard Dent, defensive end for the Chicago Bears, walked away as a rare defensive Super Bowl MVP, recording 1.5 sacks, a blocked pass and two fumbles recovered.

The cost of a 30-second TV commercial rose once again in 1982, up to $324,000, the most expensive to date. Pat Summerall and John Madden handled broadcasting duties for Super Bowl XVI, which brought in a record 85.24 million viewers worldwide.

Nearly 93 million viewers tuned in to catch Super Bowl XX on TV, a record thus far. Every MVP of past Super Bowls was honored at halftime of the game, which also included a performance from Up With People to the theme “Beat of the Future.” The cost of a 30-second commercial spot rose to around $550,000 in 1986, a big jump from the previous year’s.
