Colts VIP Update: Week 1 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The 2018 Indianapolis Colts and Colts VIP Tailgating season are officially underway! On Sunday, after the first official Colts VIP Tailgate presented by Hays + Sons of the season, the boys in blue were back where they belong at Lucas Oil Stadium, facing off against the I-74 neighbor Cincinnati Bengals.

Luck Back in Action

A sight for sore Colts fans’ eyes on Sunday, quarterback Andrew Luck was back in action for his first regular season game since the 2016-17 NFL season, and Luck did not disappoint.

Despite an early red zone interception, Luck seemed to settle in and had no trouble sharing his passes throughout the Colts offense.

Luck finished the game with a career-high 39 completions on 53 attempts, for 319 yards, two touchdowns and the lone interception.

A Familiar Result

Despite looking solid on offense in the first half, and the defense holding Andy Dalton, A.J. Green and the at-times explosive Bengals offense at bay, it seemed to be a tale of two halves for the Colts.

After jumping out to a 23-10 lead, the Bengals would end the game scoring 24 unanswered points, including an 83-yard scoop-and-score off a Jack Doyle fumble on a late Colts drive to seal the game, resulting in the Bengals walking away with a 34-23 victory.

However, for Colts fans, although a familiar result, the team remained positive following the game, with head coach Frank Reich and quarterback Andrew Luck maintaining that while a disappointing result, the team walked away with plenty of positives.

Looking Forward

The Colts hit the road for their first away game of the 2018 season, heading to FedEx Field to face the 1-0 Washington Redskins.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl V

Before they were known as the Indianapolis Colts, the team originated in Baltimore, where they lost Super Bowl III to the New York Jets. However, the team would return in Super Bowl V, looking to capture their first title against “America’s Team.”

Colts Capture Their First Championship

Once again played at Miami’s famed Orange Bowl Stadium in January 17, 1971, Super Bowl V between the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Colts would take place in front of nearly 80,000 fans strong.

The first Super Bowl to be played on artificial turf, and would go on to be dubbed the “Stupor Bowl,” due to Dallas’ record-setting 10 penalties throughout the game. The Baltimore Colts would walk away with their first Super Bowl victory, 16-13 winners over America’s Team, despite losing legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas in the second quarter due to injury.

Super Bowl V continues to live on in infamy as the only Super Bowl in which the MVP was awarded to a player on the losing team. Chuck Howley, linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, would go on to take Super Bowl MVP honors in his team’s losing efforts, intercepting two passes. He was also the first player who was not a quarterback to win the award.

Countdown to Super Bowl 2019 Atlanta: Super Bowl III

After two disappointing campaigns in the 2017 NFL season, the New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts are turning over a new leaf as teams begin to embark on the “Road to Super Bowl 53” in Atlanta. But in 1969, the then-Baltimore Colts and Jets squared off in Super Bowl III in Miami, Florida.

The “Super Bowl” Is Born

Once again taking place in Miami on January 12, 1969, the third-edition of the NFL-AFL Championship was the first to wear the ‘Super Bowl’ moniker, dubbed Super Bowl III. More than 75,000 football fans would once again descend upon the legendary Orange Bowl Stadium, which would stand as the largest Super Bowl attendance numbers in the three-year history of the game.

A low-scoring affair, Super Bowl III became infamous for rumors that Jets quarterback “Broadway Joe,” Joe Namath, had privately guaranteed a victory just days before the game, something that’s become all-too-common in today’s day and age. Namath would, however, go on to make good on his promise, delivering a 16-7 victory over the Colts, the first AFL victory over an NFL team, and receiving Super Bowl MVP honors after completing 17 of his 28 attempts for 206 yards.

For halftime, Super Bowl III brought some entertainment for the first time that didn’t consist of just a college or university marching band. Famous comedic icon Bob Hope led a program that honored the Apollo Astronauts, accompanied by the Florida A&M University marching band. Unfortunately, the Jets and the Colts would not go on to meet again in a Super Bowl as formatting changes as a result of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 would pit both teams in the same conference.

Road to Super Bowl 53: AFC South Preview

The ‘Road to Super Bowl 53’ is just under a month from officially kicking off for teams heading to training camp. Could 2018 be the year of the AFC South’s rise?

Jacksonville Jaguars

2017 Record: 10-6, AFC South Champions

One of the biggest surprises of the 2017 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars not only won the AFC South, but were runners-up in the AFC Championship, facing off against the New England Patriots.

When you rise to a 10-6 record and one-win away from the Super Bowl, you don’t mess with the formula too much. That’s why the Jacksonville Jaguars had what could be considered a relatively-quiet offseason. The team did choose to move on from wide receiver Allen Robinson, instead signing former Colts wide receiver Donte Moncrief, and getting what many considered the best offensive lineman in free agency in former Panthers tackle Andrew Norwell.

Tennessee Titans

2017 Record: 9-7

An injury to quarterback Marcus Mariota left the Titans struggling to keep up with the Jaguars in 2017, but that didn’t stop the team from reloading in the 2018 offseason.

The team signed a pair of prized former Patriots in running back Dion Lewis and defensive back Malcom Butler, pairing well with new head coach (and former Patriot) Mike Vrabel. Tennessee did let plenty of nana players walk, most notably running back DeMarco Murray and wide receiver Eric Decker, but that doesn’t seem to be a major concern for fans about the future, considering both players’ production has dropped off in recent seasons.

Indianapolis Colts

2017 Record: 4-12

The Colts are hoping they will finally have their quarterback. After season of “will he, won’t he,” quarterback Andrew Luck finally appears to be ready to hit the field, and he’ll have a brand new coaching staff and revamped roster to do so with.

After hiring Super Bowl champion offensive coordinator Frank Reich as their new head coach, the Colts underwent something of a transformation in the 2018 offseason, reverting back to the 4-3 defensive scheme and bringing in players to fit that. First priority, however, was protecting Luck, bringing in offensive linemen Quenton Nelson (1st-round draft pick), Austin Howard (Raiders) and Matt Slauson (LAC). On the defensive side, the Colts also signed former Raiders standout Denico Autry, and drafted plenty of young defensive talent.

Houston Texans

2017 Record: 4-12

A mid-season knee injury to quarterback Deshaun Watson left the Texans to struggle in the AFC South, but that wouldn’t stop the team from reloading around him in the offseason.

Houston brought in plenty of talent on both sides of the ball in 2018, most notably the “honey badger,” safety Tyrann Mathieu, and defensive backs Johnson Bademosi and Aaron Colvin, helping shore up the team’s defensive pass attack. Watson looks to return in 2018 at full strength, and will return the majority of his offensive receiving core and offensive line in the process.

2018 Indianapolis Colts Schedule Preview: Weeks 14-17

After a successful mandatory mini-camp that saw quarterback Andrew Luck throwing his first passes in almost a year, the Indianapolis Colts are breaking for the summer before reporting for training camp in a little more than a month. We’re taking a look at the last leg of the 2018 season schedule, with weeks 14 through 17.

Week 14: at Houston Texans

Sunday, Dec. 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. ET  — NRG Stadium — 2017 Record: 4-12

Key Additions: Tyrann Mathieu, DB – Johnson Bademosi, DB – Justin Reid, S     —     Key Losses: Marcus Williams, DB – Bruce Ellington, WR – Marcus Gilchrist, S

A familiar foe in Week 14, the Colts will travel to Houston to take on the division-rival Texans for the second matchup of the season at NRG Stadium.

Week 15: vs Dallas Cowboys

Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. ET — Lucas Oil Stadium — 2017 Record: 9-7

Key Additions: Tavon Austin, WR – Kony Ealy, DE – Allen Hurns, WR     —     Key Losses: Dez Bryant, WR – Jason Witten, TE – Alfred Morris, RB – Anthony Hitchens, LB – Orlando Scandrick, DB

A matchup of two teams in similar positions, the Dallas Cowboys come to Indianapolis in Week 15 to face the Colts.

Despite retaining head coach Jason Garrett, the Cowboys are not without roster turnover in 2018. The team lost two of its premier pass catchers in wide receiver Dez Bryant (released) and tight end Jason Witten (retirement), as well as two defensive staples in linebacker Anthony Hitchens and Orlando Scandrick.

However, returning the core of running back Ezekiel Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott means the offense is on track to continue flying high, leaving this Week 15 matchup a defensive test for the Colts new-look defense.

Week 16: vs. New York Giants

Date & Time: TBD — Lucas Oil Stadium — 2017 Record: 3-13

Key Additions: Saquon Barkley, RB – Nate Solder, OL – Michael Thomas, S – Alec Ogletree, LB    —     Key Losses: Brandon Marshall, WR – Justin Pugh, OL – D.J. Fluker, OL – Jason Pierre-Paul, DE

A matchup formerly circled on Colts fans’ calendars due to the matchup of Mannings, quarterback Eli Manning and the New York Giants will roll into Indianapolis to face the Colts in Week 16, sporting a fresh new-look and younger team on both sides of the football.

Despite losing key players such as defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul and wide receiver Brandon Marshall, the Giants reloaded on both sides of the ball, drafting star running back Saquon Barkley out of Penn State, signing former New England Patriots offensive lineman Nate Solder and trading for former Los Angeles Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree.

Barkley, who many speculate was on the Colts’ 2018 NFL Draft wishlist, looks to be the featured piece of this Giants offense moving forward, giving the Colts new defense a tough task at hand late in the 2018 NFL season.

Sunday, Dec. 30th, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. ET — Nissan Coliseum — 2017 Record: 9-7

2018 NFL Draft Winners, Losers & Maybes

With April’s 2018 NFL Draft officially in the rearview mirror, teams are beginning to set their sights on Atlanta for the pinnacle, Super Bowl 53 in 2019. What teams walked away from the draft winners, losers and maybes?

Winners

Arizona Cardinals: On the hunt for a franchise quarterback after the retirement of Carson Palmer, the team managed to not only move up five spots by giving up just a third- and fifth-round pick, but they also manage to snag one of the consensus top three quarterbacks on the board. Former UCLA standout Josh Rosen, who has arguably been one of the more outspoken quarterbacks in this draft, fell right into their lap. And general manager Steve Kim wasn’t done adding wide receiver Christian Kirk out of Texas A&M, and a solid, versatile offensive lineman in Mason Cole.

Indianapolis Colts: For second-year general manager Chris Ballard, the emphasis for the Colts seemed to be clear in this draft; solidify the front lines on both sides of the ball. Ballard took arguably the best physical prospect in this draft, Notre Dame’s Quenton Nelson, when the offensive linemen fell to them at #6, and continued the run, grabbing Auburn’s Braden Smith in the second round. Ballard’s moves proved to be fruitful for the team’s draft positioning, with five picks in the first two rounds, and the team used the remaining three to round out the defense with linebacker Darius Leonard(LB, South Carolina State), Kemoko Turay (DE, Rutgers), and Tyquan Lewis (DE, Ohio State).

Losers

Oakland Raiders: In a draft that many expected to see the Raiders and new head coach Jon Gruden stand out, the team was seemingly quiet. After starting the draft dropping five spots and only receiving a third- and fifth-round pick in return from the Arizona Cardinals, the team took offensive tackle Kolton Miller out of UCLA. While Miller is a solid prospect, the Raiders have gaping needs on the defensive side of the ball, and plenty of defensive talent was on the board. The Raiders then flipped their third-round pick to the Steelers for controversial wide receiver Martavis Bryant, who, though has tremendous upside, has had his fair share of controversies.

New Orleans Saints: Although the Saints were able to grab one of the top defensive prospects in this draft in UTSA’s Marcus Davenport, the team paid a pretty penny to grab him, giving up two first-round picks to acquire him. Pair that with the team’s lack of a second-round pick in this year’s draft, and the Saints ultimately give up two first round picks to come away with just one player in the first two rounds, and a player who, though raw, has solid potential at best.

Maybe…

Cleveland Browns: The jury is still out. While the Cleveland Browns held both the #1 and #4 overall picks in this year’s draft, it felt as though they still managed to shock the country and experts alike, taking Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and following that up with a first-round stunner in Ohio State defensive back Denzel Ward at #4. Both players have tremendous upside and athletic ability, but because they’re the Cleveland Browns, we’ll wait to judge this draft until we see the finished products.

New York Jets: One could argue that the New York Jets were one of the winners of the draft, given the team’s having USC quarterback Sam Darnold falling to them at #3, despite many considering Darnold the top quarterback prospect in the draft class. However, Darnold’s 22 turnovers (13 interceptions, nine fumbles) have to leave Jets fans skeptical of Darnold becoming the quarterback of the franchise. But the real loss comes at the price the Jets paid for Darnold, giving up the #6 pick, as well as the #37 and #49 overall picks, and a 2019 second-round pick, just to move up three spots. And as the draft began to unfold, it became increasingly clear a quarterback would have probably been available at #6, albeit hypothetical.

2018 NFL Draft Recap: Indianapolis Colts

The 2018 NFL Draft has officially closed, and that means teams now have a better idea of what their rosters will look like on the path to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta. After a somewhat-quiet free agency period and plenty of anticipation and rumors, how did the NFL Draft impact the 2018 Indianapolis Colts moving forward?

Round 1, No. 6: Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame

“Nelson doesn’t play a headline-grabbing position, but he plays a position of significant need for the Colts. It has been obvious over the years that the Colts have struggled on the offensive line, as they gave up an NFL-high 56 sacks last season, and poor play up front has played a factor in quarterback Andrew Luck missing 28 games over the past three seasons. The 3.7 yards per rush by the Colts ranked 28th in the NFL last season. Nelson excels in zone and gap-run schemes, according to coach Frank Reich.” – Mike Wells, ESPN.com

Round 2, No. 36: Darius Leonard, OLB, South Carolina State

“He’s here, in short, because of the speed. New coordinator Matt Eberflus’ 4-3 scheme will rely on linebackers who can run and hit, and cover sideline-to-sideline. They believe Leonard can grow into that player. I thought he stood out. His speed, his athleticism, his ability to cover … we thought he was the fifth-best ‘backer in the draft and we thought he has big upside.” – General Manager Chris Ballard, via IndyStar

Round 2, No. 37: Braden Smith, OG, Auburn

“Smith, another team captain, is a mauler who dominates with size, strength and toughness. Though his lack of reactive quickness can be a problem against speed-rushers, Smith’s technique, tenacity and power are enough to win most downs. He joins Nelson and Kelly to give Indianapolis one of the nastiest interior offensive lines in football.” – Joe Hopkins, FOX 59 Indianapolis

Round 2, No. 52: Kemoko Turay, DE, Rutgers

“Pass-rusher has been a position of need for several years for the Colts. They haven’t had a legitimate one since Robert Mathis had 19.5 sacks in 2013. Turay had an impressive freshman season at Rutgers, recording 7.5 sacks. But consistency was an issue for Turay, who played standing up a lot. He had only seven sacks total in his final three college seasons. Part of the reason Turay was inconsistent was because he underwent two shoulder surgeries while in college.” – Mike Wells, ESPN.com

Round 2, No. 64: Tyquan Lewis, DE, Ohio State

“The effort to upgrade a pass rush that finished with the second-fewest sacks in 2017 (25) continues with the selection of Lewis. The two-time team captain is a power-rusher with solid get-off, good length and the ability to attack the quarterback from the interior on passing downs. He needs to improve versus the run.” – Joe Hopkins, FOX 59 Indianapolis

Round 4, No. 104: Nyheim Hines, RB, NC State

“Speed, speed and more speed. Hines’ 4.38 40-yard dash was the fastest among running backs during the combine. Hines fits in with coach Frank Reich’s offensive system of moving players around the field to force mismatches. Hines spent his first two seasons as a receiver at NC State before moving to running back last season. He describes his style of play as similar to Darren Sproles, Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara. Hines rushed for 1,113 yards and 12 touchdowns last season at North Carolina State. Hines will also have the opportunity to be a return specialist for the Colts.” – Mike Wells, ESPN.com

Round 5, No. 159: Daurice Fountain, WR, Northern Iowa

Round 5, No. 169: Jordan Wilkins, RB, Ole Miss

Round 6, No. 185: Deon Cain, WR, Clemson

Round 7, No. 221: Matthew Adams, LB, Houston

Round 7, No. 235: Zaire Franklin, LB, Syracuse

2018 NFL Expert Mock Draft: Picks 6-10

As teams get set for the month of April, the next step on the journey toward Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta involves invigorating the team’s rosters with an infusion of youth; the 2018 NFL Draft. We’re gathering some of the top experts from around the NFL world and taking a look at who they predict will go where, continuing with picks 6-10.

#6: Indianapolis Colts

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Bradley Chubb, EDGE, NC State | Bleacher Report (Traded to Buffalo Bills): Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA

There are plenty of opinions on what the Indianapolis Colts might do at #6, but CBS Sports’ R.J. White thinks the team decides to stay put. “The Colts should be jumping for joy if they can get Chubb after trading back to No. 6. The NC State pass rusher is one of the two or three best players in the draft, and he happens to fill a big need for a Colts defense switching to a 4-3 under new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. A front consisting of Chubb, Jabaal SheardHenry Anderson and Al Woods could be nasty.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

#7: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

CBS Sports, NFL.com: Derwin James, S, Florida State | Bleacher Report: Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama

While many think Florida State’s Derwin James is the pick here, Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller thinks the Bucs get themselves a different defensive back at #7. “Fitzpatrick is a defensive eraser. Alabama moved him from corner to safety to a nickel spot throughout his career, and he flourished in each. The Buccaneers would likely identify him as a plug-and-play starter at strong safety. Given how productive he was in that role for the Crimson Tide, he could have a Jamal Adams-type of rookie season.    ” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#8: Chicago Bears

CBS Sports, Bleacher Report, NFL.com: Quenton Nelson, G, Notre Dame

A consensus at #8, the Chicago Bears get some offensive line help to protect second-year quarterback Mitch Trubisky. “If you draft your franchise QB in 2017 (Mitchell Trubisky), you continue to surround him with weapons and protect him in 2018. The middle of the OL for the Bears will be formidable with Pro Bowl OG Kyle Long, talented C Cody Whitehair, and now Nelson, the best OL in this year’s draft.” – Charles Davis, NFL.com

#9: San Francisco 49ers

CBS Sports: Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama | Bleacher Report: Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech | NFL.com: Denzel Ward, DB, Ohio State

While others think the 49ers might go with help in the defensive secondary, Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller thinks the 49ers will look to shore up their linebacking corps. “Tremaine Edmunds is just 19 years old and already looks like an immediate NFL starter. At 6’4 ½” and 253 pounds, he doesn’t look like a teenager and doesn’t play like one either. Edmunds is a versatile asset on defense, and given Reuben Foster’s off-field issues, he would also provide insurance in case the Niners lose last year’s first-rounder for an extended time. And should they get on the field together? Watch out.” –  Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

#10: Oakland Raiders

CBS Sports, Bleacher Report: Denzel Ward, DB, Ohio State |  NFL.com: Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech

The run on the defensive side of the ball continues at #10, where CBS Sports’ R.J. White thinks the Raiders dip into Ohio State’s talented secondary. “The Raiders are seeing massive turnover at the cornerback position with David AmersonSean Smith and T.J. Carrie out the door. Rashaan Melvin was a nice pickup, but Shareece Wright is nothing more than depth. Enter Ward, an elite cover corner who has everything but prototypical size. He’ll be an excellent slot corner and should excel in Oakland, where Melvin and Gareon Conley can match up with bigger receivers.” – R.J. White, CBS Sports

2018 NFL Offseason: Indianapolis Colts Team Needs

The Road to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta in 2019 is well underway in the NFL, with teams beginning the free agency signings and turning their eyes towards the 2018 NFL Draft in April. As teams move forward, what are some of the biggest areas Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard might look to address in the coming months?

Offensive Line

Top Options Remaining: Jack Mewhort (IND), Cameron Fleming (NE), Oday Aboushi (SEA), Quenton Nelson (Draft, Notre Dame), Connor Williams (Draft, Texas)

If you’ve watched any Indianapolis Colts football over the last several years, the biggest problem you’ve seen is consistency among the offensive linemen, which would eventually lead to quarterback Andrew Luck’s missing the entire 2017 NFL season. So with the team looking to bolster their QB protection, combined with guys like guard Jack Mewhort expected to leave via free agency, expect Ballard to be busy on either the secondary free agency market, or in drafting big linemen throughout the 2018 NFL Draft.

Defensive Front

Top Options Remaining: Ndamukong Suh (MIA), Dominique Easley (LAR), Bradley Chubb (Draft, NC State), Roquan Smith (Draft, Georgia), Da’Ron Payne (Draft, Alabama)

For years, the Colts’ key weaknesses have come along the defensive front-seven, whether that mean a lack of ability to stop the run, or not being able to put pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. And after fan-favorite Robert Mathis’ retirement at the end of the 2016-17 NFL season, the team has lacked a premier pass rusher that can do just that—put pressure on the other side of the football. The choice to not re-sign linebackers Barkevious Mingo and Jon Bostic, as well as the release of defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins, leaves the Colts relatively bare when it comes to talent on the defensive front-lines. Expect the defensive side of the ball to be a big focus for Ballard throughout both the NFL Draft and free agency.

Secondary

Top Options Remaining: Bashaud Breeland (WAS), E.J. Gaines (BUF), Minkah Fitzpatrick (Draft, Alabama), Denzel Ward (Draft, Ohio State),

Despite drafting young guys in 2017 in safety Malik Hooker and cornerback Quincy Wilson, the Colts find themselves thin when it comes to players in the secondary. The departures of Vontae Davis (release) and Rashaan Melvin (signed with Oakland Raiders), the Colts’ two leading corners in 2017, leave a massive side on both sides of the field, while corner/safety Darius Butler remains a free agent.

Receiving Corps

Top Options Remaining: Jordan Matthews (PHI), Brice Butler (DAL), Ryan Grant (WAS), Calvin Ridley (Draft, Alabama), Courtland Sutton (Draft, SMU)

After letting go of wide receiver Donte Moncrief (signed with Jacksonville Jaguars), the Colts have just two wide receivers on the active roster; T.Y. Hilton and Chester Rogers. And with plenty of big receiving options both left on the free agency market and in the upcoming draft, the Colts will have to start making some moves to give quarterbacks Andrew Luck and/or Jacoby Brissett some new targets. The team reportedly hosting former Lions tight end Eric Ebron earlier this week.
