Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: @ Jacksonville Jaguars

After a shutout in their first matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Colts looked to right the past wrongs as they traveled to Jacksonville to take on the division-rival Jaguars.

Building A Hall-of-Fame Resume

As the Colts fell to the Jaguars by a score of 30-10, dropping the team to 3-9 on the season, there was one bright spot in Sunday’s matchup for one of the most deserving players in the league.

Running back Frank Gore, with 61 rushing yards on the day, moved himself in to 5th all time in rushing yards (13,697), passing legendary runnings back Ladanian Tomlinson (13,684) and Jerome Bettis (13,662), and now only trailing the greats, such as Emmitt Smith (18,355), Walter Payton (16,726), Barry Sanders (15,269) and Curtis Martin (14,101).

Shifting Focus

Despite the loss on Sunday, the Colts aren’t mathematically eliminated from playoff contention yet, but that may change on Sunday night. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, both the Colts and Denver Broncos can be eliminated from contention if the Cincinnati Bengals defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football.

With the impending playoff contention elimination, fans and the team begin shifting their focuses toward the offseason, where the team will look to not only regain a healthy Andrew Luck, but retool both sides of the football.

Looking Forward

The Colts will stay on the road in Week 14, traveling to Buffalo to take on the Bills, before heading home in Week 15 for a Thursday Night Football matchup against the Denver Broncos.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: vs. Tennessee Titans

Fresh off their bye week and looking to start anew on the 2017 NFL season, the Indianapolis Colts were once again at home in Week 12, facing the division-rival Tennessee Titans.

— Déjà Vu —

For the 9th time in the team’s 12 games this season, a halftime lead turned into a late-game loss for the Colts, as they would squander a 16-6 lead late in the 4th quarter, resulting in a 20-16 victory for the Tennessee Titans.

A late-game fumble by Marlon Mack in their own territory ultimately doomed the Colts, who before had not only the score on their side, but momentum as well, forcing two interceptions and giving the offense every opportunity to put the game away. Mack’s fumble would give the Titans the ball at the four yard line, leading to a Titans touchdown just seconds later.

— Defense Showing Signs —

The lone bright spot, week in and out, is seemingly the youthfulness and potential on the defensive side of the ball for the Colts.

Despite not managing to get to the quarterback for the entirety of the game, the young Colts defense forced two bad decisions by Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota due to pressure, leading to an interception for two of the season’s biggest stars for Indy, cornerbacks Nate Hairston and Rashaan Melvin.

— Looking Forward —

The Colts will hit the road in Week 13 to take on the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars, before making yet another trip in Week 14, this time to Buffalo to take on the Bills.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Riding an emotional wave of a week following a victory in Week 9, the Indianapolis Colts returned home to take on the AFC-rival Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10 of the 2017 NFL season.

(Another) Second-Half Stumble

In a game that was looking to be one of the biggest surprises of Week 10, the Colts had jumped out to a 17-3 lead over the 6-2 Steelers, with quarterback Jacoby Brissett leading the attack. However, after a fluke interception that was deflected off of tight end Jack Doyle’s shoulder pad, the tide began to turn for the Colts.

After containing the aerial attack of the Steelers for most of the game, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and his all-pro receiving corps came alive in the second half, tossing a quick-strike touchdown to rookie standout JuJu Smith-Schuster before lobbing up the game-tying touchdown to tight end Vance McDonald late in the fourth.

Finally, with seconds to go, the Steelers would march down the field and give kicker Chris Boswell the game-winning attempt from 33-yards out, giving Pittsburgh the narrow victory, 20-17, and dropping the Colts to 3-7 on the year.

Glimmers of Improvement

It wasn’t all bad news for the Colts in Week 10. Despite missing a handful of their starting players on both sides of the ball, players like Donte Moncrief, Chester Rogers and Jabaal Sheard stood out for the team, proving that despite the record, this team is getting better when it comes to the fundamental aspects.

Looking Forward

The Colts get some much needed rest in Week 11 as the team will take their bye week. The team will return to action at home on Sunday, November 26 against the divison-rival Tennessee Titans.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: @ Houston Texans

After falling to 2-6 on the 2017 NFL season, the Indianapolis Colts looked to keep their slim divisional chances alive as they traveled to Houston to take on the division-rival Texans.

Holding On for a Win

With a 20-7 lead in the fourth quarter, Colts fans were in a familiar place; uncomfortable, with the Colts leading, hoping the team would survive a comeback. This time, however, the episode had a happy ending, as the Colts would hold on for a 20-14 victory, moving to 3-6 on the season.

The shining star of Sunday’s Week 9 matchup was wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, who managed to reel in two touchdowns and 175 yards on just five catches, a mere days after rumors of the receiver’s possible trade away from the team were swirling.

Solid Brissett

After news of Andrew Luck’s move to the injured reserve list and his resulting miss of the remainder of the season, the reigns of the team were officially handed to quarterback Jacoby Brissett for the rest of the season. And Brissett did not disappoint on Sunday.

Brissett would finish Sunday’s victory with a 66.7% completion percentage, 308 yards and two touchdowns, including two beautiful throws to the aforementioned Hilton.

Looking Forward

The Indianapolis Colts return home in Week 10 to face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers, before taking in their bye week the following week.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: @ Cincinnati Bengals

As the Indianapolis Colts were coming off one of the worst defeats in recent history in Week 7, the team took a short drive down I-74 in hopes of setting their road to the 2017 NFL Playoffs back on track against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Better.. But No Dice

After a 27-0 shutout at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7, the Indianapolis Colts traveled to Cincinnati on Sunday to look to right the ship. And as close as the team would come, another 4th quarter loss would ultimately doom the Colts to fall to a 2-6 start, their worst since the 2011 season.

Leading 23-17 late in the game, quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who finished the day with 233 yards and two touchdowns, threw his one interception, leading to a pick-six for the Bengals, a 24-23 victory that would ultimately seal the team’s fate.

Jack’s Back

Despite a decent outing from Brissett, it was tight end Jack Doyle who shined in Week 8, finishing the game with 12 receptions for 121 yards and one touchdown.

Looking Forward

The Colts will hit the road again, traveling to Houston in Week 9 to take on the Texans, before coming home to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: @ Tennessee Titans

As the NFL endured another wild week in the 2017 season, the Indianapolis Colts traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the Titans on Monday Night Football in Week 6.

Second Half Struggles

Not a new development in this young Indianapolis Colts season, the team held a 19-9 lead early on, after an interception return for a touchdown by linebacker John Simon (see below). However, the Colts would be outscored 27-3 in the second half, 21 of which came in the 4th quarter, eventually losing the game by a score of 36-22, with the final dagger coming on a late 70+ yard touchdown run from Titans running back Derrick Henry.

Second-half struggles from this team aren’t exactly a new development, but for a restless fan base, they’re a discouraging one. The Colts have been outscore 85-22 in the 4th quarter so far this season, just six weeks into the young season. The loss in Tennessee puts the Colts alone at the bottom of the AFC South at 2-4, with the Titans, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars tied for first at 3-3.

Defensive Highlights

It wasn’t all bad for the Colts on Monday night. Linebacker John Simon, an offseason signing by new general manager Chris Ballard, is appearing to be a solid piece in this young, developing defense.

Simon’s pick-six on Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was an impressive feat, snagging the bullet right at the line of scrimmage and returning it for the Colts’ first defense touchdown of the game, giving the team a 10-point lead.

Looking Forward

The Colts (2-4) return home in Week 7, facing another vital divisional matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-3) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Indianapolis Colts Weekly Update: @ Seattle Seahawks

As the 2017 NFL season concludes Week 4, the Indianapolis Colts traveled to Seattle to take on the Seahawks in their intimidating home environment of CenturyLink Field.

Brissett Struggles

Despite a solid showing in Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns, Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett struggled mightily in his first career road start. Starting your first career game on the road in Seattle is no small task, and the Seahawks defense was able to take advantage of the crowd noise to intimidate the Colts.

Early in the game, Brissett threw a floating pass on an out-route, which was intercepted by Seattle and returned for a touchdown, giving them a 10-2 lead over the Colts. And despite leading the team to two solid scoring drives to round out the first half, Brissett’s struggles carried over to the second half, where the second-year QB was hit and fumbled the ball, resulting in a scoop-and-score for Seattle. Brissett’s 14-points given to Seattle was just one of the many factors in the Seahawks’ convincing 46-18 victory.

Defense Shines.. For A While

For two and a half quarters of the game, the Colts defense showed that young promise we’ve seen glimmers of in the first few weeks of the season.

Then, the third quarter came calling. And the veteran offense of Seattle took over.

But that doesn’t erase the team’s glimmers of greatness on the defensive front. Newcomers Jon Bostic and Jabaal Sheard, namely, led the way with a combined 19 tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss. Second-year safety Matthias Farley made arguably the best interception in the league this season, with a tip-drill toe-drag on the sidelines, and the rookies shined as well, with rookie defensive back Nate Hairston recording six tackles and one sack, and safety Malik Hooker recording an interception in his third straight game.

Looking Forward

The Colts return home in an emotional Week 5 for the team, where the franchise will reveal former quarterback Peyton Manning’s statue on Saturday, followed by a jersey retirement ceremony at halftime of the Week 5 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

Colts Weekly Update: vs Arizona Cardinals

After a disappointing Week 1 performance in Los Angeles, the Indianapolis Colts headed home to take on the Arizona Cardinals in their 2017 home opener at Lucas Oil Stadium in Week 2.

Defense Wins the Day

Despite a 16-13 overtime loss to the Cardinals, this Week 2 matchup featured plenty of positive takeaways and “moral victories.” The youthful, new-look defense, assembled by new general manager Chris Ballard, showed flashes of greatness early in this game, and eventually it just seemed the inexperience ran the defense out of gas late.

Safety Malik Hooker, the 2017 first round draft pick out of Ohio State, recorded his first interception, picking off Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer in the red zone on a play where Hooker seemed to fool the veteran QB. Rookie cornerbacks Quincy Wilson and Nate Hairston shined, with Hairston recording a sack off a corner blitz late in the game. The Colts defense was able to adequately pressure Palmer, getting to the quarterback four times, sacks by Hairston, linebacker John Simon, and defensive tackles Al Woods and Hassan Ridgeway.

Jacoby Brissett is the Real Deal

When the Colts traded former first round pick Phillip Dorsett late in the preseason to the New England Patriots for quarterback Jacoby Brissett, it was becoming clear the team was solidifying Andrew Luck’s backup position for the long term. In the short term, Brissett proved he has what it takes to give this team an opportunity to compete while the team awaits Luck’s rehabilitation from offseason shoulder surgery.

Brissett completed 20 of his 37 passes for 216 yards on Sunday, far and above the best QB performance for the Colts thus far in this young season. And despite throwing an overtime interception that would lead to Arizona’s game-winning field goal, Brissett put the team in a position to not only compete, but win.. something the Colts have been looking for in an adequate backup QB since Matt Hasselbeck.

Looking Forward

The Colts stay home for Week 3, with the Cleveland Browns (0-2) heading into town. Quarterback Andrew Luck has once again been ruled out for this week’s upcoming game, still working with trainers and doctors to get cleared for practice. The Browns look to be without the #1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Myles Garrett, as Garrett is recovering from an ankle sprain.

2017 Offseason: Top Targets for Indianapolis Colts

As the 2017 offseason begins to hit its peak, teams begin focusing on that coveted Super Bowl LII trophy. Now, the Indianapolis Colts, coming off of a disappointing 8-8 campaign in 2016, have a new man in charge, and are looking to put themselves back in the driver’s seat of the AFC South.

Already signed: P Jeff Locke, LB Barkevious Mingo, LB John Simon

Aside from finding the now-retired Pat McAfee’s replacement in former Vikings punter Jeff Locke, new Colts general manager Chris Ballard’s focus was evident; improving the pass rush. In just under 24 hours, Ballard has managed to sign former Patriots and Texans linebackers Barkevious Mingo and John Simon to efficient deals. Mingo, a one-year deal, and Simon, a three-year deal, look to shore up on of the Colts’ biggest problems in 2016, struggling to rush the passer and defend the run.

Looking Forward

While obviously looking for youth, speed and defensive talent, the Colts need plenty of help on the offensive side of the ball as well. Here are some of the post-day one free agents still remaining that should be on Ballard’s radar.

Jabaal Sheard, DE

It was reported on Friday morning that Sheard would be meeting with the Colts after several meetings with other teams. A former Cleveland Brown and New England Patriot, Sheard is a fast, versatile edge player that can either line up on the defensive line or at linebacker. Another young, fast edge rusher would undoubtedly solidify Ballard’s efforts of upgrading the Colts’ defensive front seven.

Terrelle Pryor, WR (Signed with Washington Redskins)

If Thursday’s rumors are believed to be true, the Indianapolis Colts were making a push for former Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, considered to be the prized possession of the 2017 free agency class. This would indicate doubts about former first-round pick Phillip Dorsett’s future with the team, thus leaving fans to believe the Colts are in the market for a third wide receiver to round out the corps. Pryor’s 2016 campaign, combined with his physical traits and raw potential, leave the former Cleveland Browns WR as an appealing choice for the Colts.

Mike Remmers, RT

Although forced to play left tackle in Carolina last season, Remmers has shown in previous seasons he can be a reliable right tackle for a solid NFL quarterback. With the protection of quarterback Andrew Luck on the forefront of many Colts fans’ minds, and with the recent retirement of tackle Joe Reitz, Ballard would be well suited to make a run at Remmers to help shore up the offensive line.
