The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles is just under a year away, and although final selections for the team will not be made until after the PGA Tour qualifying, the possibilities for the 2014 team are starting to take shape.

It seems that many of the players from last years team will be back to take over the British this year, after a saddening defeat by them at Medinah. Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Jason Dunfer, Steve Stricker, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson, and Keegan Bradley are all on the short-list as possible returns to this year’s team.

A few up-and-comers that are getting a lot of buzz this year:

  • Jordan Speith: He’s a 20-year-old rookie who achieved his first Tour win, his first Major appearance, and 2nd place at the tour championship. Depending on how he does at the upcoming Presidents Cup may depend on whether or not he secures a seat on the Ryder team.

  • Peter Uihlein: He was last year’s #1 Amateur, and since he’s been playing most of his games in Europe, he will be familiar with the setting; a big plus for him to get a spot on the team.

  • Brooks Koepka: He qualified for the 2012 U.S. Open while still under amateur status, and made the team for the 2013 Open. He has also been playing in Europe, so his knowledge and familiarity will be a bonus as well.

The captain for this year’s team is Tom Watson, a golfer with decades of experience and wins. He’s won eight Major championships and has five Open Championship titles. He is recognized as one of best golfers of all time, and after an incredible career like his, his leadership will be invaluable for the 2014 USA Ryder Cup Team.
