This past Sunday, after Groundhog Day’s Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and 111.5 million people were getting ready to watch the Seattle Seahawks achieve a stunning first Super Bowl victory over the Denver Broncos, “The Smallrus” was celebrating a special win all his own.
Kevin Stadler, aka “The Smallrus,” won the Phoenix Open, his 239th PGA Tour start and first-ever victory, earning him a spot in the 2014 Masters Tournament – a tournament his father, Craig “The Walrus” Stadler, won in 1982. Kevin Stadler closed with 3-under-par 68 for a one-stroke victory over Bubba Watson and Graham DeLaet.
The Stadlers are the ninth father-son winners in tour history and will be the first to play in the same Masters … one that Craig Stadler says will be his last. He is a 13-time PGA Tour winner with nine Champions Tour victories.
Even more for the record books, Sunday’s attendance of 60,232 helped the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open set a new overall tournament and PGA Tour attendance record of 563,008 (the previous record of 538,356 was set in 2008 when the Super Bowl was played at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ).
Yes, you could say a lot of history was made on Sunday February 2.
The first major golf championship of the year, the US Masters Tournament is played at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, traditionally during the first week in April. This year’s PGA Tour event is scheduled for April 7-13. About 90 players are invited to compete in this time-honored event, which awards the famous Green Jacket to the winner. Champions of the Masters Tournament earn a lifetime invitation to future Masters events.
