Football, Gospel Music and the Super Bowl

Ever since it was announced that Vy Higginsen’s Harlem Gospel for Teens Choir is providing entertainment for the 2014 Super Bowl Players Ultimate Tailgate on Super Bowl Sunday, folks have been learning more about this this entertaining and talented group.

In early December, the Choir performed with Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande at this year’s Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and NBC television event in New York. In addition to singing on NBC’s Hope for Haiti telethon  –with Madonna, Dionne Warwick, Cissy Houston, Chaka Khan and Valerie Simpson- the Choir has performed for celebrities Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, Russell Simmons, Forrest Whitaker, Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith and Sting. And CBS newswoman Lesley Stahl recently spent an entire year documenting Vy Higginsen and her inspirational music program in Harlem for 60 Minutes.

“We are thrilled to have the Harlem Gospel for Teens Choir as a part of our Super Bowl Players Ultimate Tailgate. Most of these children will never have the chance to experience a Super Bowl and this is our little way of exposing them to the Super Bowl experience,” says Bullseye Event Group spokesperson Kyle Kinnett. “I am sure our clients will be as blown away by them as I personally was.”

Gospel music, football and the Super Bowl have a long and lasting relationship. In 2014, the trio is celebrating 15 years of inspiration at the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, the first and only gospel event sanctioned by the NFL for Super Bowl Weekend.

The concert takes place at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Friday, January 31 and features Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum-selling gospel and contemporary Christian and mainstream artists and the NFL Players Choir, and honors marquee NFL players. Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, Yolanda Adams, The Winans, Mary Mary, CeCe Winans and Donnie McClurkin all have performed in years past. The fundraising event also benefits national and local charities –donating 5,500 tickets and portion of the proceeds totaling over $450,000 in the last 11 years.

“It’s easy to see why the players are so passionate about this event,” says NFL Network, and it gets rave reviews. USA Today says it’s “an uplifting event that left the crowd waiting for Super Bowl Gospel!” and MTV says  it’s “definitely one of the best events surrounding Super Bowl.”
